Is McCluster really toast? (1 Viewer)

Talking Dexter, RB (/WR?) for KC.

Fits the desciption of jack-of-trades, master-of-none, but could be worth a late round flier.

He's being drafted (if at all) in around the RB 74 range last I looked.

Just looking through the stats from last year, this seems an anomaly.

He was RB #42 in rushing yards, ahead of Tolbert, Redman and Ridley.

He was RB #16 in receiving yards, ahead of McCoy and Bush.

He was RB #12 in receptions, ahead of Bush, MJD and LT. (I play PPR).

He was RB #31 in total yards, ahead of BJGE, Hillis, et alia.

And if your league gives points for returns, he was #30 with another 500+ yards.

Now many will hasten to enlighten me as to the reasons he did relatively well last year.

I know Baldwin decided to break his hand on Thomas Jones' head in camp, and Jamaal Charles basically missed the year to injury, and the Chiefs now have Hillis, and drafted 2 more small/fast players (Searching for Private Welker?)

However, I'm thinking if I can get him after my kicker...

I don't see any value for McCluster this year for the reasons you listed.

Baldwin decided to break his hand on Thomas Jones' head in camp, and Jamaal Charles basically missed the year to injury, and the Chiefs now have Hillis, and drafted 2 more small/fast players

I owned McCluster in different leagues each of the last two years. He's certainly worth a late round flyer but I wouldnt expect much at all.Even with the numbers you posted and doing "relatively well" he had little FF value IMO. He' simply not a guy I want in my lineup, or roster for that matter, because his touches and production are just too sporadic. I think what really holds him back is the lack of big plays. A player like him really needs those explosive, big plays to take advantage of the limited number of touches he gets. McCluster just has produced enough of those and has only 4 Total TDs(3 from scrimmage, 1 return) in his 2 year career. He's the type of guy that will bounce around FF rosters and the ww throughout the year. Not the worst guy to take at the end of the draft and if you pick him up of the ww at the right time he COULD be serviceable for a week if you HAVE to put him in your lineup. But I would not expect anything more than that.

McCluster is playing almost exclusively at WR in training camp. Wouldn't be surprised to see him lose his RB/WR designation entirely, and becomes strictly a WR. which would make him even less valuable than he already is.

Im holding him just to see where his next landing spot is. Crossing my fingers he replaces Sproles or gets a similar role somwhere.

Hate his situation, but I still believe in his talent.

Great buy low IMO, especially in PPR return yardage leagues.

I'm intrigued again after tonight. If he's a slot guy with RB eligibility that's a primary target in passing situations, he could be useful in PPR leagues. Seems like Bowe signing diesn't affect his position either and may help him.

Chiefs seem determined to list him at RB on depth chart, which is how many leagues derive position.

Umm MC who? you mean that guy behind Jamaal charles AND Peyton Hillis?? I think he is a waste of a roster spot unless bowe or one of the 2 rbs go down

Given his size and speed, I always thought he would be flat-out deadly in the slot. Maybe he just runs really poor routes.

i think you're right on with this... with bowe signing and baldwin coming on, i think it's possible mccluster will be a huge beneficiary in this offense. throughout the preseason mccluster has been cassel's favorite target and showed it again tonight.i loved him coming into the league and drafted him when i could. unfortunately, i think he was missing a role initially for the chiefs so i kind of gave up hope... as a RB i was selling, but now i'm buying and i see some big numbers for him this season and into the future out of the slot. he could be a huge value in PPR leagues imo.

Finally looking like they have him in the best spot to succeed. Reminds me of Welker.

I always saw him as a smaller, mis-utilized Percy Harvin and couldn't understand why the previous coaching staff was trying to have him fill Jamaal Charles' shoes last year. At 175 pounds he's always going to be limited as a RB and shouldn't have been running between the tackles, but get him out in space as new OC Daboll is doing and they may have something. He was an early 2nd round pick so the front office believed in him, and now playing slot WR it'll be interesting to see how involved he'll be. Last night's game was very encouraging. I know this, his yards-per-catch won't be like Amendola's if he catches 60+ balls. Kid has speed to burn and he'll break some big gainers if they get him the ball enough.

McCluster looked real good last night. It's nice to see Daboll getting him in a role to exploit his skills. Could be a real nice steal as a late round PPR WR. Wouldn't surprise me to see him catch 60+ balls this year.

Breaston's done as a fantasy factor.

McCluster &/or Baldwin will quickly make him irrelevant. He's in a bad situation -- Baldwin will replace him on the outside sooner rather than later & McCluster will be the slot.
