Is NE Def worth keeping? (1 Viewer)

They are getting torn up against the pass. Why were they ranked high in preseason and now they are doing so bad? Are they worth rostering?

Defenses are such a crap shoot! Every time I've invested heavily in a defense they have turned out to be horrible so normally I utilize the Defense by Committee articles to select a couple bargain options.

This season that article came out later then normal and my auction was moved up so I had to wing it and I selected the Patriots and Giants and am now regretting it!

They will be up most games forcing teams to pass on them to catch up - they are just not producing the amount of turnovers that made them the #1 D/ST in my league last season. If you have an option on the WW that is better I would take them or do D by committee.

I think moving forward, you will see offenses realize how to effectively attack NE and I don't see their defense getting any better than it is now---in fact, I see it getting worse. I just dropped them and will use a committee approach from here on out.

I only have them in one league where the DEF unit gets 3 points for the team winning the game. Since I expect the Pats to handily win at least 11-12 games this season, that is the only thing keeping them around for me.

Heck, the Raiders defense has been outscoring them so far this season!

They will get better this year but will never be great. So be prepared for them to give up a boatload of yards and a far amount of points. If your league awards or penalizes for those two items, there are better options.

At some point I believe they will start to get some sacks and should get some turnovers. They were worth a lot last year because they forced a ton of turnovers and then got a bunch of return TDs. THose to me are more fluke plays than anything else and very hard to predict (and repeat or rely on).

Three things to consider:

The current defensive unit has had very little time to play together so like Ocho on offense need to get used to the system and their teammates.

The defense has several guys banged up or hurt. If they heal up and all get on the field, that wouldn't hurt their cause.

NE teams and defenses generally get better and improve as the year goes on. This year, maybe they go from bottom 10 to middle of the road. They probably won't get a ton of sacks, so people are banking that they will force a lot of turnovers. If they keep scoriing 30-40 points and opponents are playing from behind, they might get a decent amount of picks, but that's about it.

But as I keep saying, this team does not have the talent they had before (Law, Samuel, Seymor, Bruschi, Harrison, McGinnest, Vrabel, and on and on). Maybe BB can coach them up and into something much better, but they sure have shown that they are close to becoming elite by any stretch.

I just noticed that NE leads the league in yards per play at 7.8 (GB #2 with 6.7), and yards allowed per play at 7.1 (CAR #2 at 6.6).

I drafted them but dropped them after they looked so bad against the Dolphins in week 1. Now I'm rolling with the Lions.

Things aren't going to get much better this week as Belicheck gameplans to stop McFadden, which will just allow Campbell to tear the secondary apart and still manage to find DMC underneath.

They were the #1 D/ST last year, which is exactly why you shouldn't spend a draft pick higher than the 15th round on a defense.

Not so sure Campbell is capable of tearing apart any secondary. But I hope he finds a way to get the ball to Moore. Dude is fun to watch.

Teddy Bruschi called the Patriots the worst defense in the NFL today on either ESPN or the NFL Netwlork.

dropped them for lions couple weeks ago in one league and then yesterday for the buccaneers...

my league awards points based on points and yardage allowed as well as int's/sacks/fum...
