Is now the time to grab Matt Cassell? (1 Viewer)

With the Patriots continued dominance and the AFC East's continued ineptitude, it is apparent that the Patriots should be able to clinch a playoff spot pretty early this year. Couple this with Bellichek's inability to take Brady out of these recent one sided games, and you have a possible scenario that has Cassell seeing quite a few snaps for the Pats down the stretch because of the possible injury and/or clinch. If such is the case, Cassell could provide some value during the playoffs.

My question is if/when do you start thinking about picking up Cassell?

The only reason to pick up Cassell is that a defensive player may take Brady out in one of these blowouts, then Casell would have some value.

I dont think BB ever takes brady out. It doesnt match his M.O. This guy wants home field throughout the playoffs, not just a division win. This isnt dungy we are talking about, he wont be sitting any starters, look how he calls plays with a 30 point lead in the 4th quarter on 4th and 1? he is still going for it...thats not someone who will sit his guys.

Did you just think of that?

If the Patriots are 14-1 in Week 17, you might see Cassell. But it won't matter for 95% of fantasy players out there.
You mean when the Pats are 15-0 in week 17.?
Brady will play if they're 15-0 -- if only long enough to ensure an undefeated season. But if they have 1 or 2 losses (but still have home field wrapped up) then there would be much less incentive for Brady to play.
There will be plenty of incentive if the Colts only have 1 loss.

I don't think you've been paying attention.
:goodposting: Cassell has ZERO value. Brady is gonna have 79 passing TD's and 15 rushing TD's this year. Hell, he might even throw a couple to himself. I wouldn't doubt it if BB puts him in for a few defensive snaps to see if he can't pick one off and take it back!

And my question for you is WHY you would think about picking up Cassell? It's not just the system and supporting cast. Cassell is NOT Brady, so the question is whether you think Cassell would be the best option (assuming you have Brady because otherwise it makes almost zero sense on any level) over whatever other QBs are available on your FA list?

Our league leader only has 1 QB (Brady) on his roster.

If I do well in the playoffs, I'd think about stashing Cassell just in case before week 16, but it's kind of a unique situation.

Can't see how he'd had much value since in the bizarre chance BB sits Brady for any amount of time, he'd definitely sit Moss, probably Stallworth and Welker as well.

Hence the part bolded above.

What about Brady owners who have little to no other options available? Is Cassel a guy you should grab for championship games (ie. week 16/17) just in case BB does in fact rest Brady?

I think I'd rather take a flyer on JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn in that situation.

The only reason I'd add Cassell is if I had Brady.

Cassell would be a deader roster spot than the one I've currently got Ricky Williams in.

I'm asking the questions in here buddy :lmao: I do think Cassell would provide value in that the offense is still going to be the Patriot's offense and Cassell could easily come in and put up top 12 numbers, which is starter quality numbers in most formats. As for whether Cassell will get a shot, that is a tough call at this point. The post was meant to begin a dialogue on if/when the shark move is to pick him up. Obviously some don't think Cassell sees the field and if he does, that he won't produce. More power to ya, but I think there are a lot of teams that QB isn't their strong point and could use a potential boost in the playoffs, as there is usually someone that comes out of nowhere down the stretch to lead teams to titles (see Ron Dayne and Drew Bennett in recent years)

The only QB I have on one of my Rosters is Brady. I picked up Cassel just in case, but I am 99.9% sure he will be a waste of a pick up.

There were a lot of happy people that picked up Larry Johnson when Priest Holmes was still playing.

I think the issue here is that if Brady gets hurt Cassell will play with a great surrounding cast and could have some value. That said, I think we'd see their running game take on more value such that Cassell wouldn't be much better than simply usable.

If you are thinking about weeks 16-17 then if Brady sits then so would many of their other top players meaning you could probably do better.

Meanwhile, the chances of Brady sitting are slim depending on the Colts and the other top teams could be close enough to them to make the last game matter this year. It looks the same in the NFC with the Giants and Packers keeping Romo less likely to sit the final few games. If the Colts beat the Pats and the Colts then lose to another team and both are 14-1 then the final game would really matter to both teams.
