Is Pierre Thomas the goal line back? (1 Viewer)

Will Pierre Thomas be getting the goal line touches this year or will someone like L.Betts be a td vulture and make him nothing, but a solid, but unspectacular 2nd rb? If Thomas does get the goal line touches I don't see how he isn't a top ten rb.

P.S. I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I can't find it.

Crapshoot b/w Bush, Thomas & Ivory.

Ivory will assume the Mike Bell role from last year. However I would look for Ivory to be healthy the entire year. Bush actually gets a lot of red zone love for the Saints.

Thomas will get a decent share of the goal line carries, but I think they will be split with Bush, Betts and Ivory. Right now I do not think there is any one RB who is the "goal line back" in N.O.

And I agree that Thomas is not likely to be a top-10 fantasy RB this year. Likely in the top 20, maybe top 15, but not top 10.

bush definitely gets red zone looks. depending on your definition of goalline here are his stats from within the 10 yard line:

2009

2 receiving TDs

4 rushing TDs

2008

2 receiving TDs

1 rushing TDs

2007

2 receiving TDs (both were < 2 yards)

4 rushing TDs (3 of which were < 4 yards)

the 10-yard line was arbitrary, but my point is he will get touches regardless of where the ball is. he's too dynamic and creates mismatches for the team as a whole that i suspect he'll be on the field plenty to capitalize on short yardage situations in addition to being able to break a 20+ yarder...IMHO, he is greatly undervalued

it depends

both thomas & bush seem to miss time .... if one goes down, without the other the one that remains is gold.

i own thomas in 2 of 3 leagues, bush in none .... that speaks to as how i lean.

See what I mean. IMO both Thomas and Bush can be gold (or maybe silver) without an injury to either. The key to me is the presence of a 3rd RB. Mike Bell led the Saints in rushing attempts last year and he missed 3 games himself.

Those carries have to go somewhere and as a Skins fan I just cant imagine them going to Ladell Betts now that Hamilton is out. This is the reason many are looking for a big bump in PT's touches.

But as I said earlier, Sean Payton really seems to believe in spreading the wealth so to speak. One would think that PT's production would warrant him getting the ball more and at least getting the opportunity to see if he could handle 250 touches. But I can easily see Ivey, Betts, or someone else getting work and limiting his ceiling.

Skins fan as well and I just find it funny how 2 years ago, Betts had "starting caliber RB" pasted all over him after his stellar 1/2 season subbing for an injured Portis, and now he's relegated to an unqualified back-up. Not disagreeing with you at all, just saying...We should've traded him back then.

The thing about trading Betts is that he did serve a purpose as a decent backup RB and Im not sure how much value you would have got for him anyway. But I was always avid that he was nothing more than just that. A decent backup. I was a long time poster at another site and I recall having arguments with people for 2 off seasons in a row. Many people claimed that Portis/Betts were interchangeable and some even said Betts was the better back. I always thought such talk was ridiculous.

Betts had one great half of a season playing with fresh legs against bad defenses when the O-line was actually healthy and playing well. Sometimes people just fall into the right place at the right time. I NEVER saw him as anything more than a capable backup who had decent versatility in that he could catch a little out of the backfield as well.

Thomas is one of those players I am always scared to take too early, because you never know how much he is gonna touch the ball, and then whenever I play him, I lay awake at night, scared that this is the week he will go off. :banned:

Kinda like Santana Moss a few years back. The week you sit him he grabs 7 for 3 TD's and 175 yards.

People may not see Bush as a "between the tackles" runner or whatever, but he certainly has a nose for the end zone and Sean Payton seems to recognize that. I think both backs will get ample red zone chances.
