Is playing video games a sport? (1 Viewer)

I've noticed that the ESPN website has been reporting on gaming tournaments (e-sports).  I'm sure there is a level of skill, and maybe even endurance at that level.  It doesn't seem like it should be a sport, and this is maybe an unfair comparison, but like NASCAR, you are sitting down, using your hands, strategizing, etc.. Of course you are also risking your REAL life in NASCAR, and there are no extra lives.

the latest story...

Comparable to darts, archery,  shooting, etc. If you consider those sports, then yes, it is a sport.
I would agree with this.  Depends on your definition of sport.

Re: OP's comment, there are absolutely a ton of skill and mental endurance involved in competitive e-sports.

Yeah, definitely takes more mental ability/endurance than the "sports" I listed.

A cross between speed chess and darts.

Sprained my thumb this mornng on an AQ walk in Clash of Clans - she went the wrong way chasing after some Larry's.

Doc is telling me I'm considered day to day. Hoping to avoid the 15 day DL.

If it's a sports related video game like NBA 2K15, Madden, or Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball, then it's a sport for sure.

Do you shoot archery competitively?  I'm willing to bet you have no idea what you're talking about.

That is a skill competition.

It would be a cool sport if the archers shot at each other, last man standing wins.

It's a game, like chess, rifle shooting, darts, bowling.

It doesn't require athleticism, speed, size, but plenty of practice and concentration.

Games, not sports.

ESPN also airs poker, Scrabble and spelling bees, those aren't sports either.

Always a terrible attempt at humour.  Wouldn't baseball be awesome if they could hit each other with bats.

I just saw some article in my wife's people magazine about a gamer who's YouTube channel has 42 mil subscribers and who makes 11 million a year from it all.

I don't get it.  People really like spending hours watching other people play video games?

That's 100x worse than watching them play golf, tennis, bowling, or even soccer.

I guess similar to watching people play poker though, and that's a thing that I used to do.. ...

My sons will watch hours of Minecraft experts on YouTube to learn how they build things.

No. I play video games and it's a resounding no.

*As a side note, archer/using a bow is more akin to golf than it is to chess/video games. Perhaps even more physically taxing because pulling back a bow (drawing a bow?) is way tougher than swinging a golf club. I don't care enough about archery to discuss it but I do think it deserves a bit of credit.

It's just a new form of media, you older guys crack me up.

"Why, back in my day we just heard them describe the action over the radio! You kids today lack imagination with your fancy moving pictures." [/tanner]

What does that have to do with the question the OP posted? Or were you just feeling pent up all day looking for a chance to use the standard FBG "you're old" schtick?

I've heard that in Korea there is a TV channel just for Starcraft and that the top Starcraft players are like rock stars with groupies and everything.

Even over here there are a lot of people that make a living playing video games through endorsements and streaming.

The answer to the question is "no" btw.

I think it is most similar to race car driving.
I went go kart racing this weekend.   Did two races and was FK'd up the next day, big time.  Bruises on hips/shoulders... major soreness in legs.  GF had sore arms and bruises as well.  I don't think video games are anything like car racing.

I had to dig a big hole to plant a tree yesterday and am really sore in my back and aems and legs today.  Also whacked my knee with a shovel and have a nasty bruise now.

Is digging a sport, too?

WTF are you talking about?

I don't give a fk what anybody calls anything.   Call masturbating a sport if you want, fk if I care.

Car racing is nothing like video games is what I said in my post.

Frolf is evidently a sport now so I guess pretty much anything qualifies as a sport so long as you're not sitting on your couch with your #### in your hand.

To some this is a sport but until we have a set of established rules I don't think this can be considered a sport yet

I think people are confusing sorts and athletes.

Not all sports are played by athletes and not all athletes play sports.
