Is Reggie Bush a bust? (1 Viewer)

I wouldn't necessarily call Reggie a "bust", since I reserve that for the JaMarcus, Leaf, Charles Rogers-type players. If he was the #8 pick, would people be starting threads asking if he was a bust? What if he was the 16 pick? To me, a bust is someone who wasted their talent, and couldn't handle playing with the big boys in the NFL.

In 4 years in the league Bush certainly hasn't lit up the NFL like many thought he would as the most hyped college RB I can ever remember.

I definitely thought he was going to be "the next great back". Bush might have been the best college RB I ever saw after Barry Sanders. Like many people, I thought there was no way his elite skills couldn't translate to NFL greatness. Evidently I was wrong.

That said, he is still a good NFL player. He's been a big part of New Orleans' resurgence and their Super Bowl team. I doubt that any Saints fans are displeased with the pick of Reggie at #2. If the 2006 draft were held all over again I think that he'd still be a 1st round pick.

You can't just throw around words like bust with a highly drafted player without considering what actually constitutes average value for draft selections.

Number 2 picks in the draft 2006-1996

2006 Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans

2005 Ronnie Brown, RB, Miami - good player when healthy, but injury issues

2004 Robert Gallery, T, Oakland - bust at tackle, ok guard

2003 Charles Rogers, WR, Detroit - ultra bust

2002 Julius Peppers, DE, Carolina - probable Hall of Famer

2001 Leonard Davis, T/G, Arizona - average tackle, excellent guard

2000 LaVar Arrington, LB, Washington - very good for a few years, then ruined by injuries

1999 Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia - outside shot at the Hall of Fame

1998 Ryan Leaf, QB, San Diego - ultra bust

1997 Darrell Russell, DT, Oakland - excellent for a few years, then busted for steroids and kicked out of the league

1996 Kevin Hardy, LB, Jacksonville - solid career with one standout year in 1999

How many players on that list have had a better career than Bush so far? Peppers and McNabb obviously, but other than that Bush doesn't seem that bad a choice in context.

After winning a Super bowl ring , which he was a big part of the winning effort in the playoffs (See Cardinals playoff game for example) Is that not enough payoff for the #2 pick in a draft? Bust indeed
Yeah I guess every player on a SB winning team is automatically worth the #2 pick. :thumbup:Bush is a bust.

obv ronnie brown has been better than bush as well.anyway, you are correct, you gotta define bust properly before you can analyze. bush is likely not a bust, but if there were a redraft, there is no way he goes top 10 in any of the last 10 drafts. he has underperformed his draft slot and expectations. yawn.

He has probably made the Saints/city more then he has been paid. On a business level I don't think you could ever call him a bust. Performance wise, still no.
