Is there a boardwalk with rides and games that isn't loaded with trashy people in the country? (3 Viewers)

OC Maryland will only reaffirm your feelings about the kind of people boardwalks draw.  Was down there for spring break and the number of loud, obnoxious, likely drunk teens, bikers, etc was off the hook.  Here's one fine gal I managed to snap a picture of since was the white trashiest of the white trash I've ever seen.

Her and her brood were all horrifying.  Take away her looks for a moment, can you imagine the type of person that rolls around a boardwalk in a blue state like Maryland with a confederate flag sweatshirt?  And I'm not suggesting it'd be ok in somewhere like Alabama, just that there you'd expect to be among more people who thought like you.

I could not believe it.

My rankings, of major boardwalks (at least one amusement pier and more than a few blocks long) living in the tri-state area my whole life:

1) Ocean City, MD

2) Ocean City, NJ

3) Rehoboth Beach, DE

99) Wildwood, NJ
ah yes, the white trash riviera- where meth-head kids come to roost.

Delaware beaches are the only NE beaches worth visiting. NJ beaches attract one type of trashiness while OCMD attracts a different type of trashiness. Pick your poison.

to be fair- we go to Ocean Grove, NJ- right next to Asbury Park but might as well be a lifetime away. have to buy a beach pass, dry town, religious town, AND the gays. beach is clean and nice, as is the water. but the boardwalk there is only really a walkway getting you to Asbury Park.

As others have mentioned, there are a few decent spots in NJ if referring specifically to beaches (although most don't have a boardwalk) like Cape May, Avalon, OC, Stone Harbor, LBI. A lot of normal families get away to the shore in those spots.

I'm trying to find a less trashy boardwalk though, might have to check Rehoboth out.

Interested in Old Orchard Beach that Acer mentioned as well.

doesn't rehoboth have a boardwalk?

I'd think the gays would keep it respectable and far less trashy.
Yeah, this is your answer I think. You've got Funland there for the kids, and it's got the standard boardwalk stuff like candy stores and arcades and the pizza and french fry stands and even a cheesy t-shirt shop or two, while still holding on to a tiny little shred of dignity. In fact if you go a block or so off the beach it's downright quaint.

You've obviously never been to most of the beaches in South Jersey. Almost all of Cape May County is fantastic and the WT-types certainly can't afford to vacation there. No trashiness at all.

Came in to say Ocean City NJ

Wife and I had our first child in March, can't wait to take him to Wonderland and watch him ride the same kiddie rides I went on as a kid.

Definitely not a trashy boardwalk in my experience, though it's been a few years.

Am I the only person in the world who hates boardwalks? Besides the trashy people, I am scared of rides (lol) and I hate those games people that pester you the whole time. Plus you are usually sweaty, uncomfortable, and bumping into people the whole time. The whole thing stresses me out. I hate when my son asks to goto these places.

Still very family-friendly. Ocean City is a dry town, which tends to keep the riff raff away.

It is very low brow. Boardwalks, camping and fireworks displays - No f'n thanks!

I was in Sleaside Heights on Saturday, so this is why I started the thread. At the end of the day, my 4 year old had the best day ever and even the one year old had a blast. They're obviously unaware of some of the less pleasant scenery my wife and I noticed. We headed back home around 730ish and it was starting to get much worse at that time.

After we did the rides, we were walking the boardwalk and every vendor is hollering at me, I'm the obvious mark... I let him throw the rings at the bottle tops, which is basically impossible - then we passed a guy who had Ninja Turtle stuffed animals. Darts at balloons (he offered me 7 for $10) - you had to pop 10 balloons for the Ninja Turtle. We settled on $30 for 25 darts and a guaranteed Ninja Turtle. He popped enough to win anyways, which made him so proud, so I can't complain.

I just wish there were more normal families and less meth-heads.

I wouldn't choose to go there, personally, any more than I'd go to the county fair, or Great America, or anything else along those lines. I'd rather be on the beach with a good book or out on a boat fishing with a cooler of beer or something. But the kids absolutely love it so it's worth doing for one night out of the week every year at the shore.

If you don't mind gays (not being crazy....but just walking around) Rehoboth is the best one in the DE/MD/NJ area....BUT...

Apparently Super Storm Sandy so destroyed the NJ Beaches a few years back that it drove NJers down to Rehoboth...so the past few years have kind of sucked. Hopefully though...the NJers will go back to their beaches soon.

There is where you went wrong. Ocean City next time.

OCMD Boardwalk is a haven for the Elkton, MD crowd.  Think Jesse Pinkman and his friends from Breaking Bad running around hanging with the Winter's Bone cast and extras from The Wire.

Our church has a festival every year with these types of games and rides. Kids love it and while the carnies are very carney most of the guests are just families like ours. Some trash surfaces like any fesitival, but they're severely outnumbered. Not dry either.

Yeah, Ocean City in NJ is awesome. Big fan. It's also relatively close to Atlantic City if you want to ditch the kids and go gamble or buy some crack....whatever.

There are a lot of great beach towns in NJ.   Don't lump it all together because of a few bad towns.

You can have a nice boardwalk without any rides or games.

Mom!

You know what pisses me off the most about Wildwood...

The fact that they have such great beaches, they're massive - it is like a 1/4-1/2 mile from boardwalk to ocean - just a huge spacious beach. Such a shame that it is loaded with the biggest trash from NJ.

Depending on how much #### you have to lug, that can be a negative as well. When my kids were little, lugging the huge diaper bag, pack-n-play, big umbrella, beach bag, chairs, cooler, and everything else was a nightmare on the relatively narrow Stone Harbor beach, Would have been absolutely brutal in Wildwood.

Makes sense, but it really is a big spacious nice beach... Just overwhelmed with mullets, cigarette butts, & beer cans.

What?   If you have a family you want that boardwalk to be as far away from the ocean as possible.  All the drunks and idiots are staying as close to the boardwalk as possible,

It just sounds like the beach isn't your thing. Guessing you're not a Great Adventure guy either.
I love the beach. Going to Outer Banks this year. I hate the long walk from boardwalk to beach at Wildwood due to the aforementioned lugging #### mentioned above. Ive been to Great Adventure once. Yes Im scared of roller coasters and the like.

Falls into being a pretty ####### long drive mix.
My lease is up in a few months, car has 17k miles, I'm allotted 32,500 - I called the manufacturer to see if I could get anything for returning a car severely under-mileaged, they basically laughed at me. I've got a free week out there that I was waffling on taking, the aforementioned was my deciding factor :bag:

Not all boardwalks are the same and I think the way to do it is go to a quiet town with a non-commercial boardwalk (or no boardwalk) but be close to a commercial boardwalk to hit up the rides, etc. for the kids for an afternoon.

I think most of them are the same.  The big ones in particular.
