Is there a boardwalk with rides and games that isn't loaded with trashy people in the country? (1 Viewer)

The whole place caters (and markets) to the family unit thing, so stroller friendly is pretty much definite for everywhere. Except the beach, I guess. We always just do fast/easy food, and I'm not much of a foody, so dining recommendations probably would be better gotten from others here. One place I do always hit when we do stay over is the pancake joint (get there EARLY) and Piccinis Pizza (Brick Oven). My wife is the Jersey girl and we ALWAYS get Manco's but I don't like it at all. Too greasy. But it's hers and the kids (and pretty much everyone else that goes there) favorite, so I suck it up.

Make sure you get a beach buggy to get all your paraphernalia (Umbrella, pails, shovels, diaper bag, etc) from your car to the beach in one trip. Look on Craigs list and you should be able to find one for pretty cheap

Also, if you're staying far enough away from the boardwalk to drive, make sure you park closer to the amusement pier of choice as the walk between them can be hard on your wife in the July heat.

we always go the week before christmas.   the week afterwards is a lot more expensive.

I was talking about going some place farther away that isnt on NY schedule. Obviously a skiing trip in NY over winter break is going to be expensive.

Also, my personal opinion is that you should stay somewhere that has beach service (sets up chairs, umbrellas, towels, etc.). Just wait when you're lugging tons of #### around setting up for 30 minutes, going back and forth to the hotel room for 30 minutes, then doing it all over again 2-3 hours later. 

When my son was 7 months old, the first time I took him to Cape May I did this, along with this huge umbrella tent thing - what a ####### disaster, never again!

Ah, good memories. :no:   So nice when the kids are older and you can just bring a few beach chairs. 

 
There's a real nice one I know about.  However, until you can find a way to prove to me you won't get any sand in your top hat or on your monocle,  you are not welcome, sir.

Fwiw, we walked from the boardwalk to the train station... Was amazed at the gentrification in asbury park. At least on the main drag we walked on. Lots of upscale shops, bars and restaurants.

ETA... This was last summer

I feel like you are slightly delusional about prices. Check Atlantis, a week in July costs 390/night. That same room the week of Christmas costs almost 600

 
I prefer "trashy people" to rich #######s.  Put me amongst the poor any day of the week.

I couldn't hold in my laughter anymore when the cop said (and this is verbatim) : "And we had one call that said someone was hanging off the balcony at 4 AM while screaming about nipples."  I  just started cracking up, I couldn't stop it.  The cop was looking at me with disdain when at that exact moment, my buddy (who had no idea the cops were at the door) walked into the room wearing elbow-high dish gloves and carrying a faux-cast iron skillet that was about 3 feet in diameter - it was a decorative wall-hanging in the kitchen.  He yells out at the top of his lungs and in an exaggerated Brooklyn accent: "Hey guy - I'm about to make a big ####in' OMELETTE !"  Just as he finishes the sentence, he spots the uniformed officer standing there.  Not knowing what to say, he just mutters : "What, are there laws about big ####in' omelettes here?"  I completely lost it.  Literally hit the floor laughing.

From that point on, we saw the cops damn near every weekend night all summer long.  That was it for us in Ship Bottom.

Nothing you say here would shock me.  The cops there are such pricks.  Cops weren't on our doorstep every weekend, but we had some on occasion.

One time a friend of mine was driving down the street paralleling the main drag and the beach.  The speed limit was 25 and had a sign below it saying "Yes Your Car Can Go That Slow"......always cracked me up when I saw that.....until my friend was pulled over by a Beach Haven cop and was cited for going 27 in a 25 zone.  I don't remember the fine, but it was probably $100-125.  Such BS.  Everyone at the house pitched in $10 to help pay his fine......it could have been any of us.

This year we are going to Myrtle Beach for the first time so family from GA (transplants from PA) has a shorter drive.

North MB is nicer than the MB strand.  I'd recommend staying either north or south (like Garden City) if you have children.  There was a time many years ago when Myrtle Beach was an awesome place to vacation.  There are still decent attractions up there but I'd recommend staying either north or south for the beaches.  

Barefoot landing is up across from where you are staying.  That's a nice area.  House of Blues (sometimes they have good bands there) is up there and plenty of restaurants.  If the wife is into wine, the Duplin winery is right there near Barefoot landing and the PGA Superstore in NMB.  Most of their wines are sweet wines (my wife loves them) and they have a nice tasting venue for a couple or a group.  You can walk through the place for free and purchase whatever... but you can pay $5 or $10 and taste test (with a guy explaining the history of each wine) 10 or so wines (not full glasses but not shots either) and keep the glass.. stuff like that.  It's a nice place.  My wife was a little baked just from the wine tasting.  

I'd stay away from Atlantic beach which is north of your beach.  However, if you like seafood, I would recommend driving a short distance to Calabash, NC, which is right on the SC/NC state line.  A few good places on the inlet there.  I recommend the Dockside restaurant for some good scallops, platters, etc..  The huge buffets in MB and NMB are too expensive and frankly not that good.  Calabash for local seafood.  Or if you find yourself on the south side of MB, Murrels Inlet has awesome seafood.  

The kids (9-12) may like the water park and go cart track at Broadway at the beach, which is south on 17 from you.  Broadway at the beach has some nice stuff that you all would like too.  I'd go down there one day or evening.  You may also like the Pirates dinner show there at north Myrtle Beach.  Pirates Voyage I believe it's called.  Kids will like it.  

I will be in Garden City the week of 15 July, I believe.  We like it down there and in Litchfield, which is south down in Pawley's Island.  I have family in Georgetown.  

 
Anyone mention Santa Cruz, CA yet? Beautiful boardwalk and pier, but you gotta pay through the nose for everything. Not trashy as I recall, though.

I haven't been to MB in 10 years but I have to say that you are spot on about Calabash, NC. It's an easy drive from NMB.

For those on the south end check out Restaurant Row  in  Murrells Inlet, SC.

In Murrells Inlet, which has a lot of good restaurants, I highly recommend the Inlet Crab House & Raw Bar.  It isn't much to look at but you can't miss it driving by with its pink roof and blue walls.  Excellent local seafood.  For an appetizer, try the Conch Fritters.  They're awesome.  

 
Maybe I'm the trash, but after spending 2 days in OCMD for the first time, I was impressed. Place was clean, beach wasn't too crowded, and the boardwalk was surprisingly free of meth addicts and gang members

 
People from there probably know better but the Navy Pier in Chicago had a boardwalk type feel and don't remember it being trashy.

 
Heading to Rehobeth (30 min north of Ocean City, MD) this Saturday for a few days couped up with my family on dads side - 5 nieces and nephews 5 or under.

add in my dads liberal rantings and stories about how he never got drunk (while drunk).   Fun times await. 

Shoot me now. 

That said, I do like Rehobeth and will spend ample time at Dogfish Head.

Heading to Bethany beach, a small beach community with a (I think very small) boardwalk, about midway between OC Maryland and Rehobeth - I'll be spending more of my time in the latter should I motivate away from the house... which I'm sure I will with 5 nieces and nephews all under 5 in one house. 

Gonna hit me up some Dogfish Head at their pub and will look to hit the brewery too. 

 
In Rehoboth right now.  The difference between this boardwalk and Ocean City Maryland's from a quality of people perspective is night and day.  No shouting, cussing, fights, gangs of teens, etc roaming the boards.

I guess the gays really do keep the deplorables away.

we're going to lovely ocean city, MD (nearby) on saturday for a week.

trying to figure out if I should cook my meth now or once I get down there.

 
Highly recommend Cape Henlopen State Park for you guys in DE. Nice clean beach, walking/biking trails, and these cool towers that were used during WWII to protect the coastline that are open so you can go inside and take the stairs 3-4 flights (I think?) to the top and check out the view. The natural areas are untouched and unlike anything around the area, tons of sea pines, birds, turtles, etc. There's not a prettier place within 100 miles for a long walk/bike.

:goodposting:  The CHSP bike trail was voted one of the best in the country. It's also a great place to do some surf-fishing in the spring and fall. 

 
Forgot to report back here - Bethany fits the bill, quite literally, better than ANY beach/boardwalk I've been to.  You know how they have the banners on main street and all with the towns' catch phrase or logo?

This is "The Quiet Resort" - totally family geared, not just family friendly.  Small boardwalk, but it spills out, much like Rehobeth, onto the "main drag" which essentially has all the shops and stuff you find on a boardwalk, minus the amusement rides. It's halfway in between OC and Rehobeth, so easy to get to either for more activity, rides and that.

I did hit up Dogfish Head brewery - a great tour, and four 4oz freebies to sample a few fresh brews. Good stuff.

I remember trying to watch a US soccer WCQ game at the Green Turtle years ago... IIRC, they had all their TVs setup to watch a preseason Ravens game. I had to beg to get one TV on the soccer game... they gave me the smallest one that was next to the bathrooms with nowhere to sit. :lol:

Velvet/Pink Mafia rocks.  There was a period a few years back where some of the gays were getting a little too rambunctious. They squashed that really quick. 1/2 gay and 1/2 family....and it works.

Off to Stone Harbor for the next week on Saturday. Can't wait! I'm sure we'll be hitting up the OC boardwalk at least once.

My dad has a place on 77th, Ocean side but both ocean and bay views.  If I were still back east could coordinate a cornhole. Bit more difficult from Texas.

I go to the green turtle on the mainland, on 611 near tanger outlet.

where you are seems like a nicer, less goofy part of OC. my MIL has a spot in ocean pines. 2 of my BILs have places in that toll bros community past the airport. so we spend our time between those and between 90 and 50 on OC proper. 

 
Hit up the pt. Pleasant boardwalk with the kids the other day. Kids had a great time on the rides and mini golf was fun. A day trip when weather isn't a great can be fun. Prefer neighboring towns as a bit trashy but nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, we were not interested in the craziness downtown. We love it where we are.
