Progressive Field is Tribe's new' home

Friday, January 11, 2008

Cleveland Plain Dealer

Jacobs Field, the Indians' home since 1994, will now be called Progressive Field, according to a source close to the team.

The Indians reached an agreement Thursday with Progressive Insurance for the naming rights of the 40,000-seat facility on the corner of Ontario Street and Carnegie Avenue. Progressive is a Mayfield Village-based company owned by billionaire/philanthropist Peter Lewis.

An official announcement is expected today.

In 2007, the Indians hired IMG to find a buyer for the naming rights to the ballpark. It has been called Jacobs Field since the day it opened on April 4, 1994, in honor of former owners Richard and David Jacobs. Richard Jacobs paid $10 million for the naming rights, which expired in 2006. The Indians have been looking for a more lucrative arrangement since that deal ran out.

PNC Bank Corp. is paying the Pirates $2 million a year through 2020 for the right to call their ballpark PNC Park. The Reds will receive $2.5 million a year through 2033 from Great American Insurance and Citizens Bank is paying the Phillies $2.3 million a year through 2028 for its naming rights.

Ugh. I know it's another revenue stream, but do we have to constantly change the names of these places?

I'm all for keeping everything status quo, Jacobs Field (The Jake).....but let's just say if the name was going to change to anything, I'm very happy it was Progressive.

And let's face it...people are still going to call it The Jake. I will...

Also, it is a 16-year deal and Progressive will be the exclusive auto insurer of the team.
Naming rights for 2.5 million per year. How the hell were the Mets able to get 20 million per for 20 years? Advertising for all the planes flying overhead?

Well...Cleveland and New York....big difference there. Who won the Mets rights? Plus, we're talking about two Cleveland-based corporations.$2.5MM per year sounds like a good deal for Progressive. Looking forward to the perks......

Awful. How can you sell for that money? The Prog?
That, or The Pro, from what I've heard.Seems like a good deal both ways to me.It's actually $3.6MM per year, not $2.5MM.....both would be more than Pitt, Cincy and Philly from the OP. So they are getting better than the going rate to similar neighboring cities.PGR spent $300MM+ in advertising in 2007...so this is peanuts from their side. PGR is fortune 500, Cleveland based (and not going anywhere) and they have worked with the Indians in the past. It's funny hearing some reaction from people here in Cleveland about how PGR just layed off 350 people and that money went to this. People are so stupid. And idiots are crying b/c it's not Progressive PARK. Well, do the Indians and PGR want people saying....hey let's go down to the pisser or the PP or john or whatever the heck you can think of? lol.

Its not my fight, and not my team, so if the fans are ok with it, thats fine. But "The Jake" was just such an original, organic nickname, that so many teams try to mimic through marketing. The Prudential Center in Newark is going through hoops to shove their insipid moniker of " The Rock" down everyone's throat. I don't know, I'm an outsider, but it seemed like a great thing the fans just started taking to on their own, its a shame that for the price of an average middle reliever or 4th outfielder each year, that name had to go by the wayside. What is 3.6 mil going to be worth in baseball dollars in 8 years? 4 guys at the minimum. I'm rather on record as rooting for THE highest payroll team around, so I know other teams have to explore creative revenue streams to compete. But I don't know, I would have fought to keep Jacobs Field in the handle some how. Jacobs Field at Progressive Pavillion or Park, something along those lines.
