Giants | Jacobs fined $5,000 for Week 2 altercation

Fri, 22 Sep 2006 23:21:15 -0700

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for his role in an altercation with Philadelphia Eagles PK David Akers during the Week 2 game.

Tale of the Tape

Jacobs 6'4" 264 lbs

Akers 5'10" 195 lbs

Gives new meaning to "pick on someone your own size"....

What happened after Akers was pulled down to the ground? Did the Eagles players go get him?
Nope, Jacobs and a couple others just started jumping on him, throwing punches etc. I think it was some security guards, NYG personel that got him out of there.

Akers deserved to get his ### stomped, he was in the wrong. He could have seriously injured the guy on the sideline with that stunt.

He was obviously pushed into the coach.
The you tube video showed that he was pushed but then launched himslef into the Giant coach. He was thrown down by Petigout and Giants pulled them off of Akers and Feely escorted him to the playing field. I have no idea what Akers was thinking?

Akers isn't your usual kicker. Jujitsu is just one of the martial arts he's into. He probably gets his butt kicked 3 times a week for fun. No doubt one on one you probably wouldn't want round 2. He was just playing to the crowd anyway. Don't push him and none of this happens.

1 - Akers was pushed

2 - Akers threw the shoulder into Way w/o cause

3 - The rest of the Philly players didn't know he was over there until it was over, which is why they didn't go after him

4 - Akers IS highly skilled in jujitsu. One on one, Jacobs would not stand a chance.

As a followup, Akers called Feely & requested he pass along an apology to Way. Feely responded back by giving Akers Way's phone number.

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a Giants fan.... but Akers CLEARLY lead with his shoulder AND his helmet, and clearly saw who he was about to hit. If he wanted some action, why didn't he go after a player? HE is the one who should have gotten a fine.... that push wasn't anything that doesn't happen on every KO in the NFL. He was barely touched.... if that's a push, then winking at someone is a foul.

The fact that he was looking to apologize proves he knows he was way out of line.... but then he didn't even have the bean bags to apologize directly, he wanted someone else to do it for him? I always thought martial arts was for wussies who knew they had no bean bags.... enter Akers. BTW, that ju-jahtrytohitsomeone didn't help him much, did it?

That might be one of the dumbest statements I've ever seen posted here. Akers acted like a punk and deserved to be fined (BTW I'm an Eagles fan). I don't know if he was trying to get his team pyched up or what but it really looked stupid on his part.

So, why didn't his martial arts "skills" help him out here? Oh, yeah, his hands are lethal weapons.... that means he can't use them, right? BTW, a very good friend of mine was an instructor for about ten years.... he agrees with "the dumbest statement" you ever saw here. ;) But, yer an Eagles fan, and that explains a lot. :11:

:goodposting: Jujitsu or not, the guy is giving 70 pounds to an athletically built NFL running back. I don't like his chances.
You should let Royce Gracie know about the weight/athleticism differential. I'm sure he has a very differnt opinion.3+ years, and finally a BJJ situation/reference! :boxing:

I think Akers got a little riled since it was jacobs. Guy is a monster.

I had no idea Akers was some sort of Chuck Norris dude but I like the chances Jacobs (and the rest of the Giants team) has still.

I keep saying this every time I hear someone ratting on a kicker or punter. You can totally take out the fact Akers is a martial artist too. In your average bar fight, a kicker from the NFL is going to kick the arses of at least 95% of the guys on this board. Don't believe me? Are you a professional athlete? All of these guys were super studs at their respective high schools. More than likely the top athlete in their school. Think these guys could do nothing on "our level"? Maybe it's just because I played soccer growing up and in high school (before I started my drinking career in college) so I respect what kickers do a little more than the average guy but remember, most of these guys are a solid 6'0 or even a tad bigger and are at least very well developed in the muscle department. (that felt creepy writing that last sentence, NTTAWWT if that's what you're into)

So, laugh at the guys on TV when their playing against the monsters of the NFL but if you want to go toe to toe with one of these guys at your local sports bar, better have your own team with you.

Viva la placekicker! :D ;)

I train in a military gym and there are guys that train there that could take your lunch money and my lunch money without breaking a sweat - with their martial arts. By the way, It was a football game not a back alley. :wall: You're right I am an Eagles fan and I also stated that Akers acted like a punk or did you miss that?

lol... you really think that, or is that the homer in you talking?i think i'd put my money on jacobs making akers his jailhouse beeotch.
lol ... a legit question.First, I agree with the other posts that Akers was WAY (no pun intended) out of line. Fine. He got the shove on the boundary. Doesn't excuse the shoulder charge into anyone on the sidelines.Second, yes, I do believe that. Unless Jacobs has been trained in some form of hand to hand or self-defense techniques, it would not be a long bout, and the big back wouldn't have a chance. It's not being a homer. You have to understand the importance of specialized training vs brute force, size, and athleticism. Trained (ok, highly trained) beats untrained.

This is some of the best shtick ever.

I do. What he did was bush league and I'm not an eagles fan, but he'd probably snap his arm off and beat him with it in a fight.

I am an Eagles fan and there was no excuse for Akers lowering his shoulder on that coach. That being said, if the rest of the Eagles team had the heart (or bean bags if you prefer) of David Akers the team wins that game instead of rolling over in the 4th quarter. Also, one on one with no pads Akers destroys Jacobs. With pads + the NY Giants team obviously the other way around.

So your very good friend calls himself a wussy who knows he has no bean bags? Why should we believe him about anything else?

He did get a fine.

It wasn't all Akers. Jacobs clearly pushed him full speed going out of bounds. There would have been a collision. What Akers did do was essentially use that as an excuse to propel himself even more into a coach (Charles Way, I guess) and the rest, as they say, was history. It was more comical than anything else. :football:

Why do people think that Akers would be as skilled in Juijitsu as Royce FREAKIN Gracie??? I don't care how well trained you guys seem to think Akers is in martial arts, or that he would "break Jacobs' arm and beat him with it," you put those two into a fight, Jacobs tackles him and pummels him no problem whatsoever. These guys wouldn't be stepping into an octagon where Royce Akers could successfully take advantage of his jiujitsu. You think Akers could take out Ray Lewis?

Again, that's a big assumption that Jacobs knows how to fight. A big man who can't fight will get taken care of quickly by a skilled martial artist.

Jujitsu focuses on using leverage to initiate joint-locks and chokeholds. If Akers is as skilled as some are saying Jacobs size would be irrelevant. Jutjitsu is a great "street-fighting" martial art since it focuses on bringing a larger person to the ground and exploiting the body's weakpoints. Everyone has them no matter what the size :) . It would be over in a matter of seconds.

It was a cheapshot by Jacobs that initiated a cheapshot by Akers. I can understand why Akers did it and I can understand why he's sorry about it. He obviously didn't rationalize the consequences in the split second he had to make the decision.

Giant fan here, but a guy who is highly skilled in martial arts would dismantle a guy like Brandon Jacobs if they were one on one in a back alley. While Jacobs could toss him around and punish Akers for a Little bit and even throw him to the ground and be MUCH physically stronger, eventually Akers would turn him into a pretzel. Just my opinion
