Jags trade DE/OLB Quentin Groves to OAK (1 Viewer)

Apparently Groves tweeted

"Duval County....I LOVE U GUYS...thanks for all your support...New Starts=New Beginnings...OAKLAND HERE I COME!!!!"
No word on what the Jags got. Shouldn't be much more than a 6th I would imagine.Makes sense for Oakland. He was much better suited for a 3-4.

Groves seems to be a good kid and a hard worker. He just never fit with the 4-3 and I wish him the best in Oakland.

I can't wait to hear what Jax got back. Normally I wouldn't expect too much but sense it's the Raider's I have my fingers crosses.

I guess I would disagree that he looked good at LB. I was really excited when the Jags took Groves out of Auburn, but at this point I'll be happy if they got a half-eaten box of French fries for him.

Well, compared to DE, when he was pushed into the secondary.

You have to love Al Davis.

You know the other GMs line up knowing that SOMEONE is going to fleece Al somehow this year, and they're just trying to make sure they win that race.

So the Jags use a 2nd rounder on this guy and after only 2 years they are positive he doesn't fit their system. No major regime or coordinator change either. Are they really that bad at player development or is there some huge disconnect between the scouting department and the front office?

Actually there was a regime change in the front office. He was the final year of Shack Harris. That draft was disastrous. They traded away a 3rd and (2) 4ths to go up and get Harvey. Then also traded up for Groves.
No. 52: Buccaneers to Jaguars. Tampa Bay traded its second-round selection to Jacksonville for Jacksonville's second- and fifth-round selections (No. 58 and 158) and a seventh-round selection in 2009.

They did change their GM. As far as the question about drafting Derrick Morgan goes, I don't think this indicates anything. Adding Kampman and the return of Hayward pushed Groves pretty far down the DE chart.

Can they really count on Hayward with his injury history? I wouldn't.

My mistake, i thought Gene Smith was at the helm for that draft. Thanks.

It looks like the Raiders are giving up one of their 5th rounders, don't know which one yet.
Not seeing that yet.I did find this.....JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Quentin Groves' days with the Jaguars are over. The 2008, second-round pick out of Auburn announced today he's been traded to the Oakland Raiders, pending a physical.Picked in the same draft as Derrick Harvey to help bolster the team's pass rush, Groves was considered undersized at defensive end and fell into a hybrid role of end and linebacker last year, seeing limited playing time.In compensation for Groves, the Jaguars will receive an undisclosed draft pick. The NFL draft begins Thursday.Though both teams have agreed to the terms of the trade, it will not happen until Groves passes a physical with Oakland.©2010 First Coast News. All rights reserved. Today - 4:35 PM ET (NBC)

Raiders acquired DE Quentin Groves from the Jaguars in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2010.

Considering the playmakers acquired this spring for fifth-rounders, the deal is a steal for Jacksonville. Groves, a 2008 second-round pick, has flopped badly in his first two seasons, managing three sacks in 31 games. In Oakland, he'll compete for snaps in the nickel package behind Richard Seymour Matt Shaughnessy. Groves is unlikely to solve Oakland's pass-rushing problems.

Well duh. If he couldn't solve the Jags' pass rushing problems why would he solve the Raiders'?

So the Raiders trade a 5th straight up for Groves, when just yesterday, the Redskins got Carriker for a swap of 5th's and 7th's.

Jags definitely got the better of this deal.

I guess it is low risk for Oakland, but they have already have a much better DE prospect on their team....

-6 foot 6 Matt Shaughnessy at 23 years old last year had 4 sacks in his rookie campaign drafted in 3rd round of the NFL draft

-6 foot 3 Groves 25 years old has 2.5 sacks through his first 2 years drafted in the 2nd round of the NFL draft
