Has this guy had his surgery yet? If not, what news has anyone heard about when?

His accident happened early in the season, hopefully time enough to get it repaired and then rehab to play in 2012. But, if no surgery yet.....what could be taking so long?

For a torn ACL, surgery typically doesn't take place for a few weeks following the injury. The swelling needs to go down before they can operate.

Years ago (I had mine 19 years ago when I was 18), they said if they caught it and operated on it in the first 48-72 hours, the recovery time would be reduced, but I am guessing that was an old wive's tale. Reality is, with the leaps they have made in that surgery over the last 20 years (mine was done by the Giants' knee surgeon), he could wait until early December and be OK for May minicamps...of course, he should get it done asap, but he has time either way. I believe when I had mine done, I was good to skate after 7 months and good for contact after nine...it has almost been cut in half. Personally, I am curious to see how TO does..regardless of whether a team picks him up, I am waiting to see how long it takes for him to publically say he is ready.

I've torn my left ACL twice, 2 & 3 years ago. The earliest my surgeon would allow me to have the surgery was 2 weeks following the tear. For the first tear I was told complete recovery would take 9 months. The recovery time for the second tear was longer, a full year. I imagine those are the typical timeframes for the average athlete. A professional athlete, who will work with the best trainers in the world and can devote nearly all of his time and energy to recovery, may be able to shorten that 9 month span somewhat. Though I'm fairly sure a 4-5 month recovery is not at all possible even with his circumstances and the advancements in medical technology.I agree that Charles has more than enough time to get ready for next season. My prior post was only meant to point out that the fact that he has yet to have the surgery is by no means out of the ordinary.

From what I remember from other player's injuries, if the MCL was also torn, doctors usually wait 6 weeks for the MCL to heal on its own and let the swelling go down before performing the ACL surgery. At least that's what they did for Tom Brady. I don't believe the Chiefs ever gave a full breakdown of what the extent of Charles' injuries were, but that could explain why he has not had surgery yet. Heck, we don't even know if he did or didn't have surgery yet, they have been quiet even since the injury.
