honestly, it's not that much to expect that a quarterback report to camp in decent physical condition. I like how Russell tried to throw it back in the media's face. For a guy who is supposed to lead his football team Russell seems to be failing miserably. The Jeff Garcia era in Oakland looming ever closer...

Unless you're in a really large league or have deep benches, he's probably not worth a roster spot, but definitely is someone to keep an eye on early in the year.

yea there's certainly denying he finally started to flash towards the end of last year, and admittedly mobility is not as much of a factor in his style of play as some other signal callers. That being said, it just doesn't portray the right message to the rest of your teammates, your coaches, and the fans to show up overweight.

JaMarcus Russell got the first reps at quarterback. He looked very sharp, throwing passes of varying distances and hitting his receivers.

Russell was followed by Jeff Garcia, then Bruce Gradkowski, and Charlie Frye.

Garcia’s cadence is loud and clear. His voice at the line of scrimmage can be heard.

Russell looked good, according to Cable.

“Really, for what we wanted to do today in terms of managing everything and the communication, calling it, making your reads and all that, he looked good in the routes and the individual stuff that we did throw,” the coach said.

No one has commented on Russell's weight, except Russell, whose comment seemed a bit offhand. I follow every Raiders writer there is, and few of them pull punches. Not a Tweet, not a text, not a column. nothing from the coach, nothing from the ESPN guys that are there, nobody.

Russell is a big dude who isn't real cut; probably makes it easy for him to put on weight in the offseason when he's not working out and playing football like camp/regular season. Unless the guy showed up looking like a lard-A, seems like this is a non-story. You hear about players shwoing up to camp a little out of shape and overweight all the time. Plus, it's not like he plays a position where an extra 10-15 lbs is going to kill him.

Well, to be honest, a pocket passer really only needs to run a 4 or 5 of times a game max. But if the weight issue means the difference in completing a play or blowing a play.... once or twice a game can make a difference. I agree he should take his job seriously and show up in shape, and if I was his coach he would be in hot water.... but if he took the time in the offseason to master the playbook (which he may or may not have fully mastered last year) I'd say that should buy him a get out of jail free card with the promise that next time it happens, he loses his job as a starter.

so if you see Russell doing extra laps at the end of every practice, you know what the coach is doing.....

I've heard of professional boxers that balloon up over 50-60 pounds between fights. They make it back, no big deal. Most players (especially RBs) lose weight during the season anyways. The only concern I would have is if he's still doing it in 2 or 3 more years. He's still young, and his metabolism hasn't slowed down much yet, so if he doesn't get it in check in the next couple years, he'll end up being FAT by 30 years old. Not that I care if a QB is a little heavy, but as most of us aging, sedentary Americans can attest to, carrying an extra 30 pounds over the years wears a little more on EVERYTHING. Back, ankles, feet/toes, knees. You feel it everywhere after a while.

The weight thing isn't as much of an issue as his poor work habits and his inability to read defenses. When you have a big arm a lot of things get overlooked, and that was the case with this guy. Sure, didn't help to go to the silver and black hole that is Oakland, but a lot of this is his own doing.

Maybe something about being committed to being a professional and doing everything he can do to be the best he can be. Coming into camp out of shape isn't a good start not to mention his 77.1 passer rating last season.

OK, not being funny this time... my expected starters are Schilens at flanker, Higgins at split end, Heyward-Bey not being ready to be considered a starter until mid season if at all this year (he's a lot more raw than most realize). It would be Higgins he'd move to the slot if he did become a starter this year. Javon Walker is damaged goods and unlikely to make much of an impact at all. He was unable to separate last year, and this offseason had more surgery. He'll be on preseason PUP for 2-3 weeks to start, then who knows. Stay far far away from him.

Possible surprise and someone not to draft but to keep an eye on is Louis Murphy, a 4th round rookie and former Florida teammate of Harvin. Excellent chance to see the field, perhaps as starting slot guy.

Zach Miller is a great receiving TE and there are worse guys to be throwing screen passes to than Darren McFadden. Your point about the WR group is valid, and pretty obvious, but they do have some tools to work with on offense. I wouldn't even consider Walker part of the offense right now. The receiving group will be Schilens, Higgins, DHB, and hopefully Louis Murphy.
