With the emergence of James Casey catching balls out of the backfield, who does this affect more? Owen Daniels or RB's Foster/Tate? Possibly niether?

I'm going to go with neither. Until I see him contribute significantly, in a fantasy sense, on a regular basis, I'm going to assume last Sunday was an aberration.

This is part of Kubiak's machine. It's very potent. Texans go 11-5/12-6 and are the offensive machine putting up numbers with NE,NO & GB. Wasn't Wes Welker Broken a year ago?Casey and Scheffler are great pick-ups right now. I know, Pettigrew is a beast, but watch, Scheffler will get his as well. Stafford has to throw the ball for the lions to roar.I"m ading Casey to my team of Schaub, Foster, Walters, Rackers, Texans Defense. All the best,Grab Reggie Bush real quick!

Casey's been there.

Washington used a TE at FB very effectively for a year or two. It's not an easy spot to be productive from. It's probably the least ideal of the whole offense.

I didn't expect Casey to get so many looks with Owen playing so I'm not going to fault a D for being caught offguard.

Word is out though.

Larry Centers had 100 catches and that team was horrible.

William Henderson was rarely effective for FF in wins, but seemed to be OK in losses.

I don't want Casey for FF but I'll root for him on Sunday

I picked him up as a stash on the off chance that he does it again. He's listed as a RB/TE on our site, so I can plug him in at TE, at our Flex, or as one of my 2 RB's... If they keep using him like they did last week then he could be a really valuable bye week plug-in guy.

more stress on the defense can only help those guys. While Casey won't be a consistent starting TE for fantasy purposes, he certainly can be a weapon out of the backfield. He is the reason they moved on from Vontae Leach. He can do the FB things, but also is versatile enough to run routes out of the backfield, flexed out, or even as an in-line TE...They will continue to use a package of plays for him per game to keep D's honest.

I don't think comparisons to Richie Anderson or Larry Centers fit here cause he is much more talented when it comes to athletic ability, catching the ball and running routes

Hoss is probably right - it's likely fools gold. I would acquire him this week but i wouldn't start him until he shows consistency.

Normally I would say that one week of production is possibly fools gold. But a couple of months ago I think it was one of the Texans coaches that said Casey was one of the best pass catching TE's in the league. Watching the Pats create mismatches with their two athletic TEs, it's possible the Texans are following suit. With AJ deep and Foster and the ground game about to get going again, there is a lot for defenses to handle. Lot of mouths to feed but there serious upside here.

I'm guessing Casey just earned himself a nice contract, as I'm guessing Payton liked what he saw and will be coming knocking when he's a free agent. He'd have some fun with Casey and Graham.

copycat league

this is possible, especially with Walter being hurt/not able to produce and Jacoby still not seeming to put it together....

As a college standout at Rice, Casey played wide receiver, wildcat quarterback, tight end and even defensive end in a pinch. That athleticism and versatility isn’t lost on Kubiak and the offensive coaching staff.

“Obviously, your wheels start spinning because you could be a little bit different offensive football team but yet teach the same schemes and those type of things,” Kubiak said. “James is very athletic. He’s a tight end with great hands, very athletic, smart, can handle a big load. He could give us some flexibility, but right now I want him to settle down, learn the position and we’ll go from there.”
interesting

Kinda sounds like it was gameplan specific against the Saints and that he may go back to doing what he was brought in to do - block.

Rotoworld: ...Texans OC Rick Dennison was a bit evasive when asked Wednesday whether James Casey is on the verge of a breakout.

Casey had a career game in Week 3 with 137 yards, but there are indications that the production was game-plan specific. "He had a great game, moving around, catching the ball," said Dennison. "We’ll continue to experiment with things and use him in that regard, but he still does what we need him to as a fullback, too." ...

Washington Post: ....Kubiak said the sure-handed Casey fit into the game plan in New Orleans, after not catching a pass in a 23-13 win in Miami the previous week. Casey was surprised, but ready, when Kubiak began calling his number....

“It wasn’t anything they said to me, it was just how the game went,” Casey said. “The biggest part of it is getting Matt (Schaub) comfortable with me out there, and giving him trust in me that I can make plays in critical situations. If Matt starts to trust you, and if you can get open, he’ll start looking your way more.”...

...Casey is Houston’s third-leading receiver, with eight catches for 155 yards. His main job, though, is blocking for Arian Foster and Houston’s other tailbacks and he says he’s constantly working to improve in that area.....

....Casey still works with tight ends coach Brian Pariani, but mostly concentrates on playing fullback.....

With AJ out for a while its time the bring this back. I'm not too high on Jacoby's lackluster career. More teams are running two productive TEs these days. How good is this kid Casey?

On the original question, I think Casey's role against the Saints was picking up the slack that Tate wasn't picking up in the passing game with Foster out.

With Andre Johnson out, I think we're probably going to see AJ's touches get spread around pretty evenly. I expect everyone - RB, WR and TE - will get more targets. If I had to pick two to bump the most, probably Owen Daniels and Jacoby Jones.

Casey is a dedicated blocking TE/FB, I see him as a poor man's version of Marcel Reece (OAK)
He's also shown himself to be a playmaker. With AJ and BT hurting, they may try to work him into the game plan this week. I would...
2nd in the NCAA in receptions in college in 2008 with 111 recs, 1329 yds and 13TDs, sounds more than just a blocker to me.
:goodposting: He's a great receiver but with Owen Daniels they haven't needed him much in that role. If Daniels got hurt Casey is ready to assume a significant role in the passing game.

That is an interesting comparison. As with Casey, there are many aspects of Reece's game I truly like: he is a converted WR, and like Casey, Reece is a versatile player with excellent hands. Casey fits the mold of the emerging athletic TEs around the league, and with increased opportunities, he could really emerge here. He is a full-effort guy with good athletic skills, so I look for him to make the most of his chances.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2GlcwpWR9M

how do you come to this conclusion? It's almost like you just raised your hand and said I have no idea what I speak of. The guy played like 7 positions in one game. He's the definition of versatile, but his natural position is probably receiving TE. remember when Chris Cooley was listed as a FB his 2nd year?

Look who is talking :lmao: "2005

During the 2005 season, Cooley blossomed as a receiver, catching 71 passes for 774 yards and seven touchdowns, including three in a game versus the rival Dallas Cowboys, breaking the Redskins franchise record for receptions as a tight end.[2] Those three touchdowns ended up actually costing Cooley his fantasy football playoff game, because his opponent had Cooley on his fantasy team.[3] He led all NFC tight ends in fan voting for the annual Pro Bowl with 422,314 votes, but following player and coach voting (each group has 1/3 weight), was not chosen for the position."

"Casey was a fifth-round draft pick by the Texans in 2009 and played tight end in his first two seasons. He bulked up in the off season to take on the fullback role, and when All-Pro Vonta Leach signed with Baltimore, Casey moved into the starting role."

"Vonta Leach

Team:

Houston Texans

Position:

Fullback

Fundamental:

Run Blocking

Run blocking for the All-Fundamentals Team is fullback Vonta Leach of the Houston Texans. He consistently executes proper blocks from the backfield. Leach fires out toward the defender attempting to block him from the inside-out while keeping his head up and staying low."

That blurb about Leach being a run blocker has no bearing on Casey. Casey is now playing his position; yes, a fullback blocks; that doesn't mean Casey = Leach.

So players automatically take on the qualities of the players they replace in the starting lineup? Someone forgot to tell Kerry Collins that.

Not to mention the Colts management....The team also added FB Lawrence Vickers in the off-season, so it's not like Casey is the only viable FB either
