James Jones vs Steve Smith (NYG) (1 Viewer)

James Jones.

Steve Smith has always been a complimentary player and not a great red-zone threat. I see his upside as more of a 600-800 yards/5-6 TD guy, whereas down the line if JJ takes over as a starter in GB his upside is quite a bit higher.

I'm leaning toward James Jones, but GB's addition of Jordy Nelson has me a bit concerned about Jones' long-term value.

Good point. Although Jordy is white he is actually a really athletic guy and i could definitely see him competing for playing time with JJ.

I don't know that Jones has the speed to be a real threat. Nelson does and the body type. Of course he hasn't shown anything just yet.

First off, I'll say I think they are pretty close in value right now in dynasty termsSure, Smith was a complementary player...on one of the most talent-stocked offenses in the country. Jones, on the other hand, was a comeback & jump ball route runner with very questionable speed who played for San Jose State. Everyone seems to think that Jones has the body type and skills to be a #1WR, but I just don't see it. The guy is 6'1, 207 with good hands but very average speed. Steve Smith, by comparison, is 6'0", 195 but ran a 4.4 forty. He is also much more accustomed to NFL style route running and footwork. Still, I'd say neither of them is going to get ahead because of their physical size/speed. So then it comes down to the nuts and bolts of being a receiver: route running, hands, yac, etc. I think Smith has the edge here.

I think these two are very close in terms of dynasty value right now. Both look like they have a pretty good chance of making it as NFL starting WRs. The question is can either one of them become a viable starting fantasy Wr?

Jones hit the rookie wall last year. The first eleven games he put up 40/594/2. The last five 5/82/0. Still 47/676/2 isn't too shabby for a rookie. As for his speed questions, his game seems destined to be more of a power WR. As a rookie he was 6'1" 207lbs. His coaches have compared him to Anquan Boldin 6'1" 217 and Hines Ward 6'0" 205. Neither of whom have been speed demons, yet carved out pro bowl years. (I recently heard a beat reporter comment about how much more developed he looks now than a year ago. He's apparently spent the entire offseason working out in the Packers facilities.)

Smith is a much more polished WR coming out of USC. I will be surprised if he doesn't put together a nice career. As has been stated in an earlier post, he's been mostly a role player to this point in his career. I am not sure if he can become a true #1 or not, but if put in the right situation, (where he very well could already be) he could become another TJ Houshmandzadeh.

Seems Smith has a better opportunity, seems like he'll start soon whereas you're left wonderring if it'll be Jones or Jordy when Driver hangs em' up

Maybe I'm alone, but while I like both guys talent enough to keep them useful in the NFL, I don't see either being more than a WR2 on any team. I get Deion Branch vibes off of both of them. 1000 yards would be my projected ceiling. Not a bad guy to have around by any means, but I don't see either as the next stud in the making.

If forced to make a call, I'd probably take Smith, but its very close.

I'd rather have Steve Smith. I can't think of any single advantage that James Jones has over Smith. Smith is more talented, more polished, and has a better opportunity.

James Jones by a hair. Yes, GB is more crowded, but I like Jones to hold the WR2 role in the offense when Driver calls it quits. Jones may not be as polished or as flashy, but for FF purposes, I don't think that should be the deciding factor. Although he hit the rookie wall last year, I like him to be better prepared physically and mentally entering the 08-09 year. A big possession WR with YAC ability.

He looked fast enough beating Champ Bailey for an 80 yard touchdown...

Good call here. I like offensive philosophy in the end also.

He's good in spite of the fact that he's white. :fishing: Jordy is a slot guy and versatile as they will use him as an Hback and even TE.

How could you tell from that video? The problem with standard TV views is that you can't see what's going on in the secondary until after it's over. It's possible that Jones just blew by Bailey and managed to outrun him the rest of the way. It's also possible that Bailey gave Jones a free release thinking he had safety help over top, saw it was a blown coverage, and then tried to use his catch-up speed to make a play at the last moment. I have no idea which was the case... but from that video, neither does anyone else. Given the way the rest of Denver's defense was dropping into zone coverage at the beginning of the play, and also given my knowledge of how criminally infrequently Bailey was used in man coverage last year, I strongly suspect that that video isn't at all what it looks like.
