I remember going to a show in '91 or '92 and watching the skinheads Seig Heiling. Perry Farrell looks at them, and just goes "I'm a skinny little Jew, just like you."

The band then rips into Ocean Size.

Who was your favorite? I know mine.

Pixies opening up for Love and Rockets in Milwaukee, Fall 1989.  Doolittle tour IIRC.  Way better than Love and Rockets.  Kim Deal was drinking heavily and slurring quite a bit.  Frank Black kept egging her on.

They both flamed out rather quickly. I went with The Pixies because the 5 albums in total were better than only 2. I was a big fan of both back in the day.

Strays wasn't a good album, but being able to assemble a great first half was quite an accomplishment given the disarray they were in at that time.

Real rough.

Pixies,  but probably only because if you went to college in the northeast during a certain time,  Pixies were gods

I remember all my cool hardcore friends were into Moby during this time. I think the rockist impulse holds up better, though YMMV.

Moby? Wasn't he 10 years later?
Go was '91, IIRC. I had to look it up, too. All I remember was the cool kids got into techno when I was a first-year, and ditched straight edge for MDMA and ####. It looks like this is correct. I remember ***t clothing and Jive from LA being big in hardcore/skate culture. No ####. It's why Big Beat seemed so dated and primed for public consumption in the mid-aughts . The hardcore kids were already on it in 91 and 92. I, on the other hand, was still SxE and listening to Quicksand and Helmet.

Pixies by a million.  Has anyone seen loudQUIETloud, a documentary on the Pixies?  It's pretty revealing imo.  They all are far more human than I thought they were.

Pixies, though hit the wrong button on my phone and am the lone Lee Mavers vote.  :bag:
But you might have voted for the best option!

They were one of the first -- and influenced Spoon in this way from Gimme Fiction (if you listen to the Beast and Dragon, Adored carefully, Spoon is summarizing their album in the intro) -- to summarize their own album in song with the last track from The La's, The La's.

Timeless Melody, live

Just sounds beautiful.

Loved both, but Pixes.

ETA:  My avatar is Doolittle 25th anniversary so...yeah.

Pixies but it is close. Both bands did interesting things and were headliners of a their respective scenes. Dirty girls that liked to party seemed to favor JA, in my experience.

meh - i can dig this, to a certain extent ... but most of those dirty/party girls were of the Crusty Punk/Hippie ilk, basically skanks

I love them both...probably have seen Pixies about 8 times and Janes - I have no idea but it's 10+

I have a live show of Pixies at Red Rocks that is all killer no filler that is in my car play list ready to go at all times.

that flows to her bones
and a comb in her pocket
if the winds get blown

Lets just say it gets loud...real ####### loud.

And Jane's live shows have been some of my favorites - saw them at University of Denver on Halloween and Perry and Dave just smoked it - naked dancers everywhere on stage in the crowd- big see saw.. And still one of my favorites was first Lallapolloza on shrooms. They were taking no prisoners back then. I saw them in Vegas doing Nothing Shocking straight through - still killed it. Dave is probably one of my favorite guitar players his sound and tone and attack are the reason.

I probably should have gone to more live Jane's shows. At one of them, they managed to mic beer coolers and do Chip Away from their eponymous "live" album, one that I still love to this day. I was SxE at the time, and still found it heavy and trippy. It's no accident that Ritual was mailed in and the only live studio track was "Three Days." You get those guys in a room, and Perry, Dave, Steve, and Eric are electricity.

I'm doing this from faulty memory:

Up from the catacombs

I ran into the angel again

He took the high road/and I took the low road

We both wore dirty faces...

We both wore dirty faces...

I know/ I know/I know it won't be easy

girls who dabbled in drugs. girls who dabbled with other girls. girls who sometimes stripped for a time. they could be rough trade, for sure, but they were a lot of fun to hang with for a time.

Janes had 3 great albums, not 2. The first self-titled all live album may be their best, though I ain't choosing. Just like in this poll. Give me both place and thank you.

Seen both. Jane's much better live, not really close. Albums, pixies. Guess it's a wash but I voted for Jane's because at the end of the day I can put on their first album and crank it.

Good poll question.   Both great bands and really fun live shows.

I saw Jane's more times, but I think the Pixies are better.

I saw Jane's in the pole and immediately thought, "easy choice"...then saw Pixies.

Wow...great matchup.

I think I'll lean Jane's just because I've seen them live more and every time was an "event".
