what type of numbers can we expect from these 2.
Smith has had extensive time in the middle -- 22 games over the past three seasons. Averaged over a 16 game season, Smith's numbers project to only 75 solos and 16 assists. I'd expect better than that this season, but he's just not dynamic enough to threaten the top 92+ solo tackle tier and above. On the other hand, Durant's 62 solos last season project similarly to Smith's over a full season -- and he didn't play an every-down role for the vast majority of the games last season. It's not often that an OLB out-tackles an every-down MLB, but it happens often enough to strongly consider in cases like this one. There's enough box score data and on-field play to make a strong argument that Durant will produce better numbers than Smith this season. Not that Durant is in any way a lock for 90+ solos; rather, I believe he's got a much better chance at reaching 85 solos and above than Smith does.well...most guys say durant is the guy to have..but like the previos post says...smith looks to be playing the middle..i take him over durant for that reason at this point
You have to take into account that the Jags are one of the stingiest teams in the NFL when it comes to awarding assist tackles. So I would project both Durant and Smith in the 65-75 solo range with 10-12 assists.I like Durant, he really impressed me his rookie yr... then last yr he was slowed by that Groin injury.Hes been a big target of mine this off-season... I already gave 2.01 for him in a 16 teamer (start 4 LBs). I was planning on taking whatever the best Rookie LB available with that pick but just figured to throw the Durant owner the offer and see where it took me.Jene, where would you place Durant w/ this yrs rookies... talent wise?
Still sifting through the scouting reports, but I doubt I'd consider him in the top tier of talent in any upcoming rookie talent class. I had Durant in a group of "interesting potentials depending on situation" prior to being drafted by Jacksonville. Now that we've seen him against NFL competition, I think he's a solid all-around talent, but without that one big skill or intangible or opportunity to slot him above the LB2 tier in 2009.I like Durant, he really impressed me his rookie yr... then last yr he was slowed by that Groin injury.Hes been a big target of mine this off-season... Ingram was a SLB last season and that's very likely where he'll stay this season, again coming off in nickel situations. He'll need an injury to have much value and could have to dodge some competition at some point in the next two seasons. I don't think he cracks the top 50 this year without a lot of help.Thoughts on Clint Ingram? According to last years depth chart, he'd move into the WLB spot with Smith moving to the middle. I am in a large league where landing decent LBs are difficult.
Good info! Thanks for the early heads up...Confirmed here http://jaguars.com/multimedia/?id=3199Justin Durant is the MLB now. Del Rio mentioned it after practice about 20 minutes ago. You'll start to see it pop in in stories today or tomorrow but remember where you read it first.

http://wokv.com/blogs/jaguars/2009/05/jags...n-minicamp.htmlSometimes you don't get much new information at mini-camp. But that's not the situation with the Jaguars this year.
Among the revelations:
Justin Durant has made the move to middle linebacker, replacing the departed Mike Peterson and leaving Darryl Smith to start at outside linebacker.
* The experiment with Brian Williams at safety is over. He'll play corner or nickel.
* Third round pick Derek Cox is good. He was the star of mini-camp. Then again, a wide receiver or a defensive back should stand out in these practices. But Cox, it appears, is going to live up to the hype from the Jaguars scouts and will be in competition to be a starter. "I set the bar high for myself," Cox said. "I didn't come into this situation thinking I'm going to be on the back-burner for my career."
# It looks like Brian Williams is going to be tried at corner until Derek Cox can prove himself. For now, Williams and Rashean Mathis are working with the 1s, with Sean Considine and Reggie Nelson starting at safety.
# Justin Durant saw time at middle linebacker. The Jaguars begin this mini-camp without Mike Peterson, who was sent packing in the off-season. Darryl Smith played middle linebacker most of the year last season, but he was working on the outside this morning.
# The Jaguars are going to need to find a backup quarterback they are comfortable with. None of the three guys behind David Garrard instill much confidence.
