Jeff Fisher Change Of Heart To Go for FG (1 Viewer)

You probably saw Fisher line up to punt at the end of the game. Indy called time out and Fisher then decided to kick the 60 yard FG.

Some think it was Fisher faking out Indy to call the timeout. Watching the game (and Fisher) I'm not convinced that's what he was doing at all)

I would try the FG all day long there over a punt. Just not sure what Fisher was really thinking.

Thoughts?

Has he addressed it after the game?

This is the only thing I've seen on what Fisher said, and it doesn't contain direct quotes.

ContraCosta Times

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher then called a time out, pulled Bironas off the field and sent punter Craig Hentrich on, instead. Fisher said he wasn't going to try a field goal because the Colts had a time out left, and he was concerned that, if the kick missed, it would be too easy for Indy to get into field goal range itself, stop the clock, and then win the game.

But, with Hentrich on the field, Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy called time out. It was Indianapolis' final time out.

If I'm Dungy, I let the Titans punt, let the last few seconds expire off the clock and then play overtime.

When he called time out, however, that changed everything for Fisher.

Dungy said he was concerned about the possibility of either a fake punt or getting caught with too many men on the field.

Instead, with the Colts out of time outs, Fisher changed direction again, sending in Bironas to try the field goal.

Fisher wasn't going to give Indy the ball at the 50 (if the FG is missed) with a timeout. Too much time for Manning to throw a 15 yard completion, call timeout, and the Colts kick the FG.

It was "ball on the 20 w/ 1 timout" (Punt) or "Ball on the 50 w/ no timeouts." (FG)

If he misses the 60 yarder and Manning completes a 15 yard pass, then calls TO, the Colts are looking at a 52 yard FG.

Great call on Fisher's part. I don't kick the FG as long as Indy has that time out.

Fisher may have thought it was a possibility that Indy would use their last timeout, but I think he inteded to punt and changed his mind once Dungy burned the last one.

Great move by Fisher, another poor coaching decision by Dungy!

Dungy, what do you mean we might have had too many men on the field? Someone has to be responsible for that! The coaching staff!

What do you mean you were afraid of a fake punt? So what? What if they fake it? You don't think your guys can make 1 tackle?

Tenn. had no timeouts left. No chance to get a FG unless they run for a 1st down AND get out of bounds.

Colts coaching is to blame again! I've said it all year. I'll say it again. Dungy's time is up in Indy in my book. Ron Meeks time has been up in my book. What defensive coordinator can't adjust a gameplan to lower the chance to give up 155 yards per game?

Hell, even the Raiders are scoring points now?!

Meeks must go!

Dungy must go!

Great take! Next caller...

I think Dungy is a little overrated. Another example of being outfoxed again. I can't see how Vermeil (or Gruden) would not win a Super Bowl with that team in the last 2-3 years.

You are exactly right. Dungy burned the last timeout because there was too much confusion on the field, apparently too many men and he didn't want to give TEN an extra 5 yards. Here is a link to the Indy Star article that contains quotes. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...0353/-1/ZONES04

Rod Bironas was on ESPN's Cold Pizza ten minutes ago, and he was asked this very question. Fisher probably told the media that he "changed his mind" because he didn't want to make it look like he was dissing Tony Dungy in any way, but Bironas just let the cat out of the bag. Here is what he said:

"We were kicking the field goal the whole time. Coach Fisher "deeked" Dungy into using his last timeout because he didn't want Manning to have any left in case I missed."

There you have it.

It's funny, when I read this article, Bob Kravitz says basically what I'm saying. The Colts can't figure out how to fix their defensive problems. They get outcoached in crunch times consistently.Another early exit for my beloved Colts. :hot:

The fact that Fisher was on top of things so quickly after Indy called that timeout is indicative of the quality of coach that he is. This is the difference between the Fishers and the Dungys in the NFL.

Amazing! NFLN will replay the game Wed at 7 pm CST. Looking forward to watching that one again.

Here is a preview for you...VY back to pass, oh wait, he sees all he has to do is run by the maniacally rushing DEs, beat the LB to the edge and gain 15 yards.

Next play, VY back to pass, oh wait, draw play to Henry who follows VYs lead from the last play.

Wash, rinse, repeat!

Long FG after coaching blunder, Titans win Titans win!

Enjoy~

Watch the replay, you'll see Hentrich pump his fist as soon as the Colts asked for T.O., as in "Yes, it worked!" I'm at work and can't check, but can someone go back an look and see if BIRONAS was on the field (say as an upback or something) when Hentrich was back to punt? Someone here said they were both out there but I didn't see that.BTW, if Indy doesn't call TO then the Titans punt. The only way he kicks the FG is IF Indy has no timeouts left.

Wow. If they were planning on kicking the FG the whole time, then what would Fisher have done if Dungy hadn't called a TO?
He would have punted for the reasons stated.

I'm a Ravens fan but have so much respect for Fisher.

#1 - Billick never would have been able to figure out a move like this one to get Indy to burn its TO.

#2 - If, by some miracle, Billick did figure out such a move, the first thing he would have done at his press conference is get up there and brag about it.

Fisher is very classy about downplaying how smart he played that situation.

Does anyone else have a problem with a balding, middle-aged. short player making the decision-breaking play in this game?

Yeah, I enjoy 60 yard field goals and Colts losses as much as the next guy (did you see Peyton Manning's face?) but I think we need to have an age limit and a height minimum on kickers.

You must be at least this tall to kick in the NFL: ______________

I've said this all year on these boards! This has nothing to do with 1 loss!

Fisher is a top 5 HC. If he ever got fired, he'd have a job before he got to his car.

He's had to deal with a salary cap mess (SF still has not recovered), and now rebuilding. Fisher is just a very solid coach. The Titans would be insane to let his guy go anywhere.

Regardless of the Titans record, they are always prepared and play hard. The lack of talent has really killed this team the last few years. But what they are doing this year, is very impressive.
