Excellent read - highly recommended
Bramel's analysis of how the Pats and Jets continuously adjusted is an excellent example of the game within the game and a potential preview for why Aaron Hernandez may continue to be a strong play.
Thanks, Matt.
I'm interested in the reasoning Bramel made that Pettigrew's big week (last week) was an anomoly. 8 targets to Scheffler's 4 targets. He finished 7/108. Yet because he is considered an "inline blocker" he is less valuable to Scheffler's slot receiving position. What doesn't make sense to me....and I get that the Lions had to open it up when they fell behind, and that created the soft zone that Pettigrew exploited....but why won't this be a recurring situation?
Pettigrew seems to have the talent, and Scheffler is a nice player, but not an elite TE. Why the lack of confidence going forward? I was thinking about starting Pettigrew over my normal starter against the Vikings, thinking they would trail most of the game.
Please pass on this comment/question to Bramel. I don't want a WDIS. Just would like to know more insight into why he feels Pettigrew is more of a dynasty stash, and not a plug n play.
TIA
It certainly could be a recurring situation with the thin group of WRs the Lions currently have and it's possible that the game situation against PHI sparks something between Pettigrew and Hill that carries over to all game situations. But the game plan during the first two weeks has been that Pettigrew blocks and Scheffler runs pass patterns. I saw Pettigrew run relatively few pass patterns through the first six and a half quarters this year and he was targeted just three times. Scheffler, on the other hand, was a receiver on well over half of his snaps and was targeted ten times over the same time period. That included a number of snaps after the WR injury issues surfaced.
I very much like Pettigrew's all-around talent, but I don't think he can be considered a plug and play TE until that game plan changes. He's an interesting upside play with WR injuries again an issue this week, but the Vikings will remain aggressive across the front seven and have much better coverage backers than do the Lions. I think it's very risky to expect more than 2-4 targets for Pettigrew.
Jene,Thanks for the detailed response. I am definitely going to bench him for now, but I am going to need to plug in Pettigrew next week as Winslow will be on a Bye week.
I thought your explanation of the x’s and o’s to be a fascinating study of the internal chess match between Rex Ryan and Bill Belicheck and makes me wish I had watched this game. I think your analysis is a definite must read prior to the next Jets/Patriots game.
What is your take on the expanded use of the Oakland WR’s? It seems like you have some guarded optimism, but going forward, I see the addition of Michael Bush and a defense on the cusp of being top 10 defense to be a recipe for ground and pound. I could see the Raiders game plan to control the clock and field position with a run heavy offense. I do like Heyward Bey and Murphy, but if the Raiders are successful the targets to these two should diminish, and Miller’s targets will increase. If the Raiders get behind, like I expect next week against Houston, the WR’s will be select weekly plays.
