Falcons RB Norwood To See More Touches This Year

Steve Wyche, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Falcons new coaching staff aims to use backup RB Jerious Norwood much more this season. Norwood's blazing speed is just too important to keep sidelined. The coaches' plan is reportedly to try to wear down the defense with starting RB Michael Turner, then let Norwood use his speed to deliver game-changing plays.

~~~~~~~~
So, will it actually happen this time? Norwood had nearly 900 yards last season; an increase in production makes him darn near startable.
"More Touches" can mean anything, this clip is not specific. Saying that he'll get more touches and saying he'll get 10 to 15 a game is two different things.
As long as the Falcons are in the game I expect Turner will get most of the carries. Course if they are down by 2 TDs early in the 3rd they will need to pass more. Norwood may split out some as a WR too. I like Norwood a lot in ppr leagues. He's great value right now in MFL drafts His average draft position is at the 129th pick.
You have to figure that Norwood will get more time in the passing game... Turner has very few receptions in his NFL career. It just seems to make sense that Atlanta would try to get Norwood the ball in space. He averaged nearly 10 yards per reception last season.
5-6 carries a games, 3-4 catches a game.... that is pushing 1000 yards.
Or it'll be more of the same. :thumbdown:
I think they are being optimistic with respect to their running game. I don't see it. Their line, QB, wr's, te's are not that good. Their defense will be awful so they will be behind big in most games. To grind teams down you need to have long grinding drives and I just don't see it with that personnel.
Can we get something more important, an analysis of the state of the O-line and likely type of play calling from the new coach/OCMany on here in the last two years argued about CAR Foster/DWill and missed the forest through the trees: Will they be adept at running in the first place?
Well, he had over 100 last year and averaged over 6 yards per carry so if they plan on using him more, it would be wise to take note.
I own Norwood in a dynasty league so followed this closely last year. Put me in the "I'll believe it when I see it category."
Virutally every week from about 4-5 on last year, we saw this patten:
- Game report: Norwood carried 6 times for 40 yards this week.
- During the week: Falcons coach X, had this to say: "Norwood is really playing well. We need to find a way to get him more touches. Expect a bigger role coming soon."
- FBG Message Board Post - "Norwood to get more touches" - Lots of posts, "will he breakout this week.
- Next game: Norwood carried five times for 32 yards.
- During the week: Falcons coach y: "We really need to find a way to get Norwood more touches, expect a bigger role...."
Wash-rinse-repeat. For whatever reason, he was paid endless lip-service about handling the ball more and never did. It took on a real "the check is in the mail" feeling as the season progressed.
Last year, Burner was not one the team and like some have already said, we hear this every year about Norwood.It's like the boy who cried wolf, I'll believe it when I see it.
The reason Norwood never got a bigger workload was because he wasn't up to it. Whenever Atlanta tried to feature him he'd pick up some minor injury.
As for knocking the QB, O-line, WR and TE...I think the WR are fine, better than a lot of teams. The O-line is underrated and they have arguably the best run-blocking TE in the league.
I think Norwood could be a decent RB3 in the event of a Turner injury, but it will be Turner and not Norwood who will be the one worth starting this year. For where Norwood is being drafted he's only worth it to the Turner owner.
6 carries @ 5 yds/per + 4 catches @ 10 yards/per = 70 yards.And that was with Warrick Dunn on his way out of town. I'd say those are close to top-end projections, unless Turner gets hurt. Worthy of an RB3 or a flex play, but I don't see him surpassing Turner in total yards, and he won't be the goal-line guy either. He could make up ground in PPR leagues, but that's about it.
Coaches say this, every year, about every backup RB, especially if they're younger.
When push comes to shove, they want to win, and that's usually with the best back on the roster. That back is NOT Jerious Norwood.
