St. Louis Rams S Jerome Carter was one of the first rookies to sign after the draft in April, and is currently playing strong safety with the first team defense. Coach Mike Martz said he was impressed with how Carter has performed, but that like all rookies, Carter is making some mistake and will need to "show up in a big way" to hold the starter's job. _________________I don't even think he is being drafting in rookie drafts I have seen.does he really have a chance to be the starting SS ?

Atogwe was not able to practice earlier at mini-camp because he was still in school, so this allowed Carter to jump in and impress coaches ... I would expect Atogwe to give Carter a run for this safety position ... but safeties in the 3rd and 4th rounds may speak volumes about the health of Archuleta?

This is only if the Archuletta at FS experiment fails. The only shot for Atogwe is at FS and should only see time if Archuletta gets hurt or Collins fails and they move Archuletta back to SS.I dont think the back to back picks says anything about the health of Archuletta. The Rams had one of the worst defensive backfields in 2004. You have to remember that Aneas Williams was their starting FS last year and they had no depth behind Archuletta. They also spent a 2nd round pick on a cornerback (Ronald Bartell)....they needed the help.

atogwe was drafted for his cover skills, carter for his hitting. since archuleta is not the best ballhawk, i would think atogwe would have to suck, or carter would have to come a long way in his cover skills, for carter to beat out atogwe.

You don't see Atogwe with a chance to start as a SS? I'm just curious how he relates to Carter's chances this year.
It relates to Carter in this way. Adam Archuletta is a better SS then Carter. If Atogwe is a better FS than Archuletta then Atogwe will get the start at FS and Archuletta will go back to SS, sending Carter to the bench.
I know Atogwe was picked before Carter, so I know the Rams will consider that while figuring out who starts.
I dont think that has anything to do with it. In the 3rd and 4th rounds, the salaries are not different enough to classify one as an investment over the other. I would think they would do what is best for the team and I am not sure that Adam Archuletta at FS is what is best for the team.

If the Rams are dead-set on keeping Archuleta at FS, I believe Atogwe will overtake Carter at SS. It's only a matter of time. Both Atogwe and Carter have more than adequate size (220lbs) to play the SS position. Both players are equally deficient in the passing game. :bag:
