Jerome Simpson (1 Viewer)

Per Rotoworld:

Coach Marvin Lewis indicated that rookie Jerome Simpson is set to open the season as the Bengals' third receiver.Simpson is ahead of Antonio Chatman and Glenn Holt. Still, he's unlikely to see as many balls as Ben Utecht before Chris Henry's Week 5 return.

:goodposting:How has he looked this preseason? I haven't heard much about him (besides for the fact that him and Caldwell were progressing slow...)eta: (rotoworld)

Rookie Jerome Simpson led the Bengals with five grabs for 114 yards in Cincinnati's second preseason game Sunday night. He did it against Lions backups, but it was encouraging after Simpson's slow OTA, minicamp, and training camp progress.
found highlights for the game, but nothing showing Simpson :goodposting:

I think this is noteworthy if it turns out to be true. Simpson has looked really good to me against 2nd/3rd team corners in the pre-season, but he does look like the type of guy who doesn't really arrive until his 3rd season. If subsequent statements and actions from the coaching staff indicate they truly believe he's outperforming Chatman and Holt already, it will be difficult for me to resist joining the sparse crowd on the Jerome Simpson bandwagon.

:lmao: He was considered a project when he was drafted. The fact that he has already "won" the #3 spot is a good indication he is coming along pretty quickly. With the uncertainty of Johnson and Housh after the 2008 season, and of course Henry who has very little job security, he is a great buy low right now in dynasty leagues. The Bengals havnt been good at much lately, but drating WR's has been a strong point. Doesnt hurt to have Carson Palmer throwing to him for the next several years either.

Yup, those were Simpson's highlights. He's a WR3 by default as a rookie WR. Don't get too excited.

I dont think anyone is expecting much his rookie year, but its encouraging that he has already won the #3 job. I highly doubt both CJ and Housh are Bengals this time next year. Simpson could fill the #2 WR role next year if he continues to improve over the 2008 season.

How long do you think he remains the WR3 once Henry returns? That's what I mean by default. The injuries and Henry's suspension have more to do with it than does Simpson's development to this point.

How long do you think Henry remains a Bengal?Again, his value is in dynasty leagues. Its more about Simpson getting some playing time this year.

I think if they really thought Simpson was going to help them this year they would NOT have resigned the local kid beater. I have not seen anything to really open my eyes yet on Simpson. But you never know. Given the opportunity he could be a sleeper.

I also think he won the 3rd WR job on default. Them 3 preseason games have been hard to watch. Drop after drop and he has some too!

What does this mean? He won the job because he was better than every other player at that postion trying out for the job.

I thought the bengals.com report and quote from Marvin Lewis were a little cryptic, but interesting:

Lewis said he's not ready to put rookie receiver Jerome Simpson in Canton yet, but he's going to at least put him in Baltimore Sept. 7. Lewis made it sound like Simpson is his third receiver because "he's going to get a significant number of snaps. ... If we have 80 offensive plays, I hope he gets 20 and we run the ball the other 60."

Seems like Lewis is stopping short of naming Simpson the #3 receiver at this point, but he should at least see the field on offense. It will be interesting to see whether he gets time with the 1st team offense in the final pre-season game.

Watched the game before last, and Simpson and Caldwell both made some nice plays. Caldwell's were of the safe, reliable variety, and Simpson made a very, very nice play, a quick catch, and a crazy athletic move to the outside. He is a speciman, too.

With Housh's contract up soon, and Chad being, well, Chad, he could be big value really soon.

Then you didn't watch the game. He looked very good.

I think TJ will be playing elsewhere next season. If the Bungles planned on keeping him, they'd already have signed him by now. That's just the way they roll. (My personal opinion is that he'll be wearing a Steeler uniform next year.) Simpson has all the tools to be a great #2 WR next year, so he is a great dynasty pick. I wouldn't expect much this year. He is an absolute freak of nature body-wise. Potential red zone monster. Huge hands, tall, and great body control. Basically a bigger version of Chad Johnson.

chris henry was re-signed and was effective as the #3WR for cincy. i expect simpson to hold onto the #3 only until henry is re-instated, barring injury.

This is likely true. However, With injuies to Housh and CJ, Henry could have been signed out of desperation, in case those injuries linger. Maybe the Bengals know something about Chad Johnsons injury that we dont. To say Simpson won the job by default isnt really true. It is not as if the other three guys competing for the job all tore their ACL's in the same week, that would be winning the job by "default".Fact is, Simpson has looked good and earned the job as the #3 WR from the guys he was competing with. No way Chad, Housh and Henry are all playing for the Bengals next year. That leaves Simpson in a very good position for a #2/3 spot on the team next year.

He is improving, but still has a long ways to go. It will be a bit before he makes any real impact IMO. He's not the most athletic guy on the field anymore, so a lot more prep/technique needs to develop.
