Jerome Simpson (1 Viewer)

In a 10 team dynasty league I play in, Jerome Simpson was sitting out there (as was Antonio Brown). This isn't a "WDI Pickup" thread, as I already snagged Simpson. Just wondering what other thoughts on him are, as he has been relatively under the radar (except at the end of last season when he dropped 120+ and 3 TDs in his last 2 games).

He has a rookie (who is more talented - admitted) starting opposite him - and a Bengals offense that is run-first (and probably second) with a young QB. But he is the solid #2 WR with decent size and ability and seems to be getting the looks. I think he could very easily become a long-term WR2 (with improved QB play) - and is, at worst a decent WR3.

Cincy homers and others - thoughts?

I don't know that he's worth WR2 in a 10 team league. More like a 4 or 5. He's kind of unknown right now. He's still sitting out there in my league, while Brown sits on my roster. I wouldn't cut Brown for him yet.

I think Brown shows us his true self this week. Whatever that is.

He dropped a few balls last week. He definitely can get open that's not an issue but I was alarmed with the dropped balls.
Has that (i.e. drops) been a constant problem or was that simply an isolated instance? I honestly don't know much about him - hence the question and the thread.

The FBG analysis in waiver upgrades/downgrades is pretty rough on his prospects as a potential add.

And the offense seems run oriented again, plus there's a rookie QB in training or Gradkowski throwing.

On the other hand, is it make sense to think that all that TO/Ocho attention could go his way, with maybe some going to Green and Gresham?

Simpson got nine targets I think in week 1.

I was a little high on Simpson during the offseason, but that was before the definite loss of Palmer and a few other negatives, notably how he interviews. The guy doesn't seem very bright at all. I would say he even sounded pretty simple-minded. After a few seasons on the team he seemed to have spent enough time there to grasp onto how things worked in Cinci, but now with Palmer gone, im sure the offensive scheme has changed quite a bit...at least enough for Simpson to fall behind on the learning curve again.

I'm not expecting much from him anymore, at least not until later in the season if he even can bring it together. I can definitely be wrong, but I'm looking elsewhere for potential. I let him go in my main league.

That's nice, but I haven't seen any evidence that suggests there's a correlation between intelligence and being a good WR. I think Jerome Simpson is a pretty good guy to pickup in leagues that are moderately deep. Even if he drops some balls, at least he uses proper technique when catching the ball, in that he extends his hands towards the ball and doesn't wait for it to hit him. He's also a pretty good route runner and has some YAC ability. Obviously his situation on a run-first team with a rookie QB isn't ideal, but I like his talent enough that I'd still want him on my team.

The way he shook off tackles after the catch today was impressive. It's taken a while for him to develop as he was a bit of a raw talent coming out of college, but the light has turned on and I think that he's going to be a solid and productive guy opposite of Green. I think he's worth a dynasty add surely. One tough thing to factor is that I think his contract is up after this year.

simpson would have had a higher profile in the offseason, but he was coming off a two or three game breakout, not six to eight...

his projection did suffer with a rookie QB, but if dalton exceeds expectations as a rookie, simpson's projection could be flawed...

he came from small school (coastal carolina?), and was slow to adjust... no doubt some owner's dropped him before his end of year three micro-breakout (i was one of them, but i added him in several leagues in the offseason when it appeared he would start)... it is a drag to be patient with a player for years, only to drop him right before he emerges...

he will rarely (never?) be double teamed across from stellar rookie green, not to mention good looking soph TE gresham...

the light did seem to come on at the end of last year... to employ an overused term, it isn't hyperbole to call him a freaksih athlete... he has 4.4 speed, the hops of lebron/kobe and monstrous paws that could probably palm two basketballs... with each hand! :)

he should be on a roster in most dynasty leagues...

Picked up Simpson last week. This seems like an easy call.

4th year WR who was coming on at the end of last year.

Very athletic and fast.

Excellent size.

Defense isn't great.

Only 2-3 guys are getting major target numbers. He's the only one to get high targets through 2 games.

Ocho and Owens are gone.

Green is going to likely garner the double teams and still may not have the complete confidence of coaches yet as he's a rookie.

Can be had for nothing.

Appears to have a competent QB, though that's still in doubt and keeping guys from grabbing him (lucky you).

Risk/reward analysis seems pretty easy unless you are so completely stacked at WR that you can't roster him.

... i don't understand how someone with 14 inch hands can drop a ball.
I don't understand how a guy with 4.4 speed catches an 84 yard pass on busted coverage and doesn't score.
It's pretty easy to understand if you saw the play. It may have been busted coverage in the sense that the CB just left him, but after Simpson made the catch there was still 2 safeties in between him and the endzone. Simpson was able to break one of their tackles but that obviously slowed him down, and then he ended up carrying the other safety for 20 yards before he took Simpson down. In reality, he did a good job of taking that catch for as many yards as he did, most WRs would have been taken down for a 30-40 yard catch on that play.

I find it strange that Decker/Denarius Moore/David Nelson are getting a tonne of love everywhere on these boards, and there's not a peep on Simpson. Simpson has just as much upside as any of those guys imo, yet people seem to be ignoring him. Granted, he may have the worst QB throwing to him of the bunch, I was never a huge fan of Dalton's, but he has definitely surpassed my expectations to this point and has a QB rating over 100 in each of his 2 starts so far. And even though Dalton has AJ Green to throw to, it hasn't stopped him from targeting Simpson who has been targeted 9 times in each game so far.

Just thinking to myself for a guy whose had 120+ receiving yards in 3 of his last 4 games, Simpson offers a lot of value right now considering everyone seems to be ignoring him and focusing on Decker/Moore/Nelson.

no charges yet, but just a heads up, as i don't think this has hit national media yet (i'd expect that to happen soon)...http://californiawatch.org/node/12698
Holy smokes! Not sure what the laws are like in KY, but it sure sounds like there was more than enough to make arrests, seize property, etc.

Anthony Collins, backup Right Tackle is the other name. Actually the story says the shipment was 2.5 pounds and that they found like 8 pounds in the residence.

If this is true what a friggin' waste - just as the kid was putting it all together on the field. As for those looking to ding the Bengals on this one, I don't think there were any red flags on these guys when they were drafted 4 years ago. But still, wtf man!

I found it on huffingtonpost, btw. I think it links to the same story. Here's the link anyway.Linky

Surprised that Florio was asleep at the switch on this one. Usually loves to pile on with this stuff, especially with Bengals involved.

a solid WR3 w/WR1 upside. He's been getting 9 targets a game. Once he calms down the dropsies could easily post WR 1 #'s. Has to do with how bad his team sucks, but who cares that's just more hurry up/cpme from behind offense. This guy is a likely 'brandon lloyd of 2010. Got him in 2 keepers and a redraft and am starting him in all 3.

Doesn't look like a rumor

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110921/NEWS010701/110921057/Cops-Pot-sent-Bengal-s-home?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

Authorities swooped in on a house owned by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson after a package containing 2.5 pounds of California marijuana was allegedly delivered to the home. Investigators found six more pounds of pot inside the home, says Michelle Gregory, spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice.

Gregory confirmed the information that CaliforniaWatch.org, a group of investigative journalists, broke on Wednesday after local reporters heard persistent rumors about the incident.

Gregory said Simpson and Bengals teammate Anthony Collins were present when a woman, identified as Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package Tuesday at Simpson’s home. Authorities detained Simpson and Collins, but no one was arrested, Gregory said. Simpson told police he lived at the residence and gave officers consent to search the premises, Gregory said.

I knew he was dumb but I didn't think he was stupid. Does anybody know what kind of criminal punishment would be handed down for trafficking in this amount of marijuana.

Per NORML.org:In KY, anything over 8oz is considered "Sale or Trafficking" -- Over 5 lbs of marijuana is a felony charge with a sentence of 5-10 years and a fine of $1,000 to $10,000. I don't really see how he gets out of this at all. Go pick up Caldwell.

I wonder who will take over slot. Tate? Hawkins? Whalen?

haha only in fbg forums will the first reply after a comment about a 5-10 year sentence is who's his replacement

Hey, that's what we're here for :D

2.5 pounds!? Wow. That's something you just don't want to get caught with. And the paraphernalia, scales, packaging, etc. just add insult to injury.

Not looking good.

but does he play this week?I need him to cover for Austin.BTW- Idiot :loco:
I'd expect he will until he's actually in jail. Given that they didn't arrest him on the spot, he's probably got until Sunday. But don't take that as a guarantee.ETA: But I'm not sure you should bank your fantasy fortunes on a guy who's playing while knowing he's likely on the hook for 5-10 years in jail. That's not really a competitive mindset.

Speculation here: if he was not arrested on the spot with that amount of smoke, the woman (Aleen Smith) must have taken responsibility for ownership.

First of all, Simpson is an idiot for being involved with this with so much to lose.

Secondly, obligatory statement about the ridiculous nature of marijuana laws in this country.
