Cowboys might make a run at Detroit receiver Roy Williams

BY CLARENCE E. HILL JR.chill@star-telegram.com

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t ruled out the return of veteran receiver Terry Glenn, but they also are looking at their options to acquire a veteran receiver via a trade.

“I don’t want to dismiss that we could look at a veteran situation, and we could look at a veteran situation before the draft,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “This is that time of year when you do get good value for players, and picks for players get good value. Players are depreciated right now right before the draft; picks are premium. You’ve got to have your eyes open, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson isn’t likely to be the receiver the Cowboys add, even though he has stated a desire to play in Dallas. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis reiterated Tuesday that Cincinnati will not trade Johnson, who would cost the Bengals $8.03 million on the salary cap if he’s traded before June 1.

The Cowboys could make a play for Arizona Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin or Detroit Lions receiver Roy Williams. Williams played at Texas, went to high school at Odessa Permian, and, according to a source, “wants to play in Dallas.”

Lions coach Rod Marinelli has said Detroit has no intentions of trading Williams, who is in the final of year of his rookie contract that will pay him a base salary of $3.724 million in 2008.

The Lions have not talked to Williams about an extension, and, with Calvin Johnson on their roster, it is unlikely the Lions can afford Williams’ asking price for a long-term extension. But Detroit could use the franchise tag on Williams next year, which would give it the flexibility to re-sign him or trade him.

The Dal offense would be terrifying if they could get their hands on Roy. I don't think there is much chance of that happening however.

Is Dallas not very high on Crayton these days? I have seen a lot of talk about them going after a WR, and from what I remember, they loved Crayton midway through 2007.

I think they love Crayton as a #3ish guy, but he lacks the speed and separation to be a true #1. He was decent enough last year but with Owens getting up there in age and Terry Glenn *probably* about done they really need some young blood.

Actually, I see this more as a replacement for TO as he can't have much left and then Crayton will just resume his roll as #2 once TO goes....

Crayton is a very good #3 and a so-so #2. In the same interview that was referenced above, Jones said he's trying to build around Romo. Giving him the weapons to be successful. Dallas knows that its offense really struggled when TO was injured last year. It would very much like to protect against that for next year.

I suspect that a 1st rounder would be around enough ammo to get a really good WR, especially one that teams are disgruntled with. What I question is how Dallas might fit this new piece under the cap. They are out of room and a good vet receiver isnt cheap.

This is spot on. ;)

As the draft begins, Detroit trades Roy Williams to Dallas for the #22.

After the #3 pick is made and the Raiders are on the clock, Detroit trades their #15 and #22 to Oakland for the #4, intending to grab McFadden.

Matt Millen, in his excitement over the trades and while doing the cha-cha, slips and falls, hits his head and knocks himself out. In the confusion Detroit misses their #4 pick deadline twice as both KC and NYJ draft. The Jets take McFadden.

Having missed out on McFadden, a now-woozy and concussed Millen is in total "Where am I? Who am I? I am Batman!" mode.

Without having a clue what he is doing, he accidentally pulls off a magnificent deal (a deal the "normal" Millen would be incapable of), trading down in the first round with some team and also getting a future first round pick. Millen then takes Mendenhall, who turns out to be a superstar in 2008, and with every other pick gets a player who really helps them.

Next day, Millen doesn't even remember the draft.

After the 2008 season the Fords are so impressed they give Millen a huge raise and contract extension.

Like Will Farrell in Old School when they were in the debate. "What happened? I blacked out."
