HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Bill Callahan, fired as coach at Nebraska after last season, was hired Friday as assistant head coach/offense by the New York Jets.

Callahan, who coached the Oakland Raiders to the 2002 AFC championship before they lost to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, has 31 years coaching experience, including nine in the NFL.

"Bill brings valuable experience as an assistant coach and head coach on both the college and NFL levels," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "His expertise with the running game and with protections will be a big asset. I look forward to adding him to our staff."

The 51-year-old Callahan had a 27-22 record during a contentious four seasons with Nebraska, where he often was viewed as an outsider by Cornhuskers fans. He was fired after a 5-7 season by former Cornhuskers coach Tom Osborne, who returned to the school as interim athletic director.

But now Callahan's back in the NFL, where he'll work primarily with the offensive line.

"I am excited about the opportunity to join the New York Jets," Callahan said. "Coach Mangini has assembled a fine coaching staff and I look forward to working with them and contributing to the team."

Although the Jets acquired running back Thomas Jones last year from Chicago and Jones rushed for 1,119 yards, the rushing attack was considered to have underachieved. New York's two first-round draft picks, tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold, didn't progress much in 2007.

Tony Wise and Mike Devlin worked with the offensive linemen last year. Wise is not expected to return.

Callahan was Jon Gruden's offensive coordinator in Oakland, and the Raiders led the NFL in rushing in 2000. He replaced Gruden in 2002 when Gruden went to the Buccaneers, and the Raiders led the NFL in passing offense that season for the first time in franchise history. They also led the NFL in total offense in 2002, but lost to Gruden's Bucs in the Super Bowl.

I remember him all too well.

Seriously, I'd heard he was talking to Tampa but the Jets offer of AHC/Offense must have been better. I think he'll be a good hire for the Jets. I think he's a better offensive coordinator than head coach... just so long as they don't let him call fake punts.

Here's a great link for Jets fans to get primed for Callahan

This is a move for when Brian Schottenheimer leaves in 2009 (at the latest)...

Kind of ironic that the guy responsible for destroying Nebraska's identity as a team built from the offensive line out is coming to the Jets to coach the offensive line. :goodposting: But in all seriousness, it seems a LOT of solid NFL minds respect Callahan and, to be fair, he was quite effective in Oakland both as Gruden's right hand man as as the head coach shortly thereafter.

Ah, Bill Callahan. The genius who went against Gruden in the Super Bowl with virtually the same playbook and audibles as Gruden used as Oakland HC. Solid hire by the Jets.

Yep. And that's why Gruden was the right hire and Dungy wasn't going to win a Super Bowl if he had stayed in Tampa. Dungy >>> Gruden, but it was the right move.

The Jets start the year with a complaint that the Pats are stealing plays. They end the year by hiring a coach that famously would not change his plays despite the opposing coach knowing exactly what they were in the Superbowl. Anyone else find that ironic?

This is why the Jets will never be good.

Hirer a ####ting coach, who could'nt win with top College players.

Glad the Jets are in the same Division as the Pats.

Well, it sounds like for now he's working the Offensive Line and they sure need help there.....

But, yeah, not a hire I'm loving... Hopefully I won't get to THIS point

Not sure why people think it is a bad hiring. He is not the head coach of the Jets and he won't be the defensive coordinator. Callahan is an experienced NFL coach, who is a good offensive mind. Very nice hiring by the Jets. Some people just aren't head coach material, but that doesn't mean they can't be fantastic coordinators/assistants (See Dom Capers, **** Lebeau, Greg Williams)

I'd like it unless they gave him control. As an assistant, he's done very well. As the boss, not so much.

If I were a Jets fan, I would be royally pissed. This guy is a PROVEN loser.

anyone know the terms of the agreement. I'd imagine they're paying him a lot more than your average NFL offensive line coach. hence, the creative title - AHC/offense.

If this is the case, I'm happy with the signing as the Jets run/pass blocking was abysmal. I think he'll make an immediate impact. If it isn't the case, and he's got partial say in the offense (team) as a whole. I'd be pissed if I were Shotty Jr. and I think the Jets have made a BIG mistake.

He had huge success with that offense in Oakland. However he was even more awful as a head coach on the NFL level and worse yet in college.

He could be a very good cog as long as he is not the HC.
