Jets sign Musa Smith (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) ESPN's John Clayton reports that the Jets have signed RB Musa Smith.

Impact: In five seasons with the Ravens, Musa started just one game, but he's always been a favorite around these parts. He's big enough to play at both fullback and halfback, and will likely battle Jesse Chatman for a job as a role player on the team.

So, if TJ goes down, does this mean Musa might get a shot over Leon?

Leon is the change of pace. He will still get some touches and slot work. I think Musa would have the inside track to start if TJ were to go down, assuming he can beat out Chatman.

...and doesn't get injured.
Yes Captain, you got that right. I am a big Ravens fan and have always hoped Musa would make an impact. He is a great team player, But that leg break he got 2 years back was NASTY! UGH! THe kind you had to look away from the screen when they show it! He may never fully recover from that kind of injury. Too bad. I wish him luck though, he is a good guy.

Stinking Roy Williams (Cowboys DB) should be kicked out of the league for good, he's hurt so many players with that damn horse tackle of his. Ruined Musa for 2 years.

I've been holding onto Musa for a long time. This is probably his last chance but I couldn't have asked for a better situation given how cluttered the league is with RB's.

I was another who held him quite awhile then finally let go. I'm on the fence regarding adding him back. TJ will be 30 before the season begins and is not getting any faster, Chatman is what he is -- OK but nothing special -- and Musa, while he's been in the league since 2003, started young and turns just 26 in a few days (5/31) so he has some tread left if he ever does get a legit shot.I think I just talked myself into picking him back up.

I know it was a long time ago but most people had him third in the draft behind Willis and LJ before he went into a bad situation with the Ravens.

He has shown flashes of potential while in B-mo. But never really stayed healthy enough to determine if he's legit. Ya- the refs need to enforce that horse collar call more often. It's a cheap way to tackle and is very dangerous. But- Musa- I am rooting for him. Never had him on a FF team tho- I tend to try to stay away from homers! But- buyer beware- that leg break he got was very serious. I think that may be why the Ravnes finally cut ties with him.

In terms of health, who knows what may happen going forward, but the leg break was several years ago now and he's healed from that.

I wouldn't bother to take another look at him except that he is going into a good situation, he's just turning 26, and in the final 3 games of last year he was 35-147-4.2-1 rushing and 6-49 receiving, so I think he's still got ability. For those who remember, he also had a dominant 2006 preseason. I know that's awhile back, but I mention it as further evidence his leg is healed and no longer an issue. I'd just like to see what he could do given a real opportunity. Earnest Graham redux perhaps.

Mark Bradley is another guy with a lot of talent who can't stay healthy. I have to agree that this is a better situation for Smith than Baltimore and he has been hyped by FF sites in the past. Nothing wrong with putting him on the bench if you have room.

had Musa on several rosters prior to the news, and just added him to 4 more

"ah, Antonio Bryant(WR8) or Musa Smith?"

slam dunk here...

LOL. And in one league it was WR9 Antonio Bryant for RB7 Musa for me.Not exactly going out on a slim limb for Musa here.

Jets backfield for the most part

TJ

Leon

chatman

richardson

now musa.

nice pick up as leon and chatman appear to be role players and richardson will lead the way for TJ. musa will probably be a breather for TJ, but could step in if he gets hurt.

JMHO

Poor Chatman did well last year as a starter and it seems like everyone has forgotten

He still needs an injury to get a starting job, but this is probably the best place to go for a backup RB outside of AZ.

I think TJ had the lowest ypc of any starting back in the league last year. If he can substantially improve on 3.5 ypc he might get a shot regardless of injury.

Jets O-line regressed significantly from 06 to 07. There were games where 3.5 ypc was so well earned you'd feel bad for Thomas. It seems a good guess they've solved the O line prob

I wouldn't get too excited. Smith has some upside, but he didn't exactly wow anyone with his opportunity in Baltimore last season and it looked for a long time like he wouldn't be on a roster this season. The Jets actually chose to sign Jesse Chatman over Smith earlier in the offseason, so I think he should merely be viewed as a camp body and veteran depth rather than a possible long-term answer at RB.

You may be right, but Chatman isn't the youngest player, Thomas Jones is 30, and Leon is clearly best suited as a COP. If there is anyone on the roster that could be a long term replacement, it is Musa. He is big enough, has good speed and instincts, and is a solid receiver. I am curious to see what his contract looks like...

If teams felt he had starter talent then I doubt he would've been on the free agent market this long. I think he has the same agent as Champ Bailey. I read that this rep was trying to leverage the Broncos into signing Musa once the Jets option initially fell through (after the Chatman signing). I guess the Broncos weren't too interested.Anyhow, I'm not saying he's a terrible waiver wire sleeper, but he wasn't exactly a hot property in free agency and I highly doubt he'll ever start a game for the Jets. I would only add him to my team in DEEP leagues where he would replace someone inconsequential on my roster.

Thats not exactly fair. The Ravens OLine was old and falling apart and their QB's were Checkdown McNair, overthrow Boller and rookie Smith... and this is what was keeping the defense honest?

He's a 4th string RB who failed to attract serious interest from any of the 32 NFL teams over a period of several months and you're resistant to the idea that he's nothing more than veteran depth? Facts are facts. He has done nothing to impress since entering the league. The Ravens let him walk in free agency even though they easily could've re-signed him. It took him several months to find a home. I see little cause for excitement. There's always the remote chance that he pulls a Priest Holmes or Ryan Grant, but he's a FLYER. Nothing more.

"The New York Post reports New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said RB Musa Smith will be counted on for more than offense. Mangini said, "Musa is a guy that we've looked at and where he brings value and flexibility is on special teams. He's done a lot on special teams over the course of his career. He's another guy you have some flexibility with, whether you want to play him at running back or whether you want to play him at fullback. And he has added depth to the special teams competition"

Translation: Musa will not compete for a starting spot anytime soon. No big shock here.

concur.
