Jimmy Williams to start? (1 Viewer)

NFL Network just reported that Webster will miss up to a month due to a groin injury he suffered this week. With Webster and Mathis out (I hope for the best with Mathis), I'm assuming Williams is next in line to start opposite Hall... If that's the case, Williams could become a viable fantasy starter since he should see a ton of passes coming his way...

You're correct.

Viable fantasy starter? I'd say a rookie CB in a Cover-2 defense opposite a guy who is considered an elite cover CB is a veritable gold mine of fantasy points waiting to happen.

Falcons run a Cover-2?Another player to look at is Juran Bolden in TB. Even though Barber's cover skills have diminished a tad, teams will still choose to "pick on" Bolden. Bolden may not post amazing tackle numbers, but he should be gold in league's which award heavily for PD's and INT's.

That was my understanding, yes, that they run a Cover-2. Is that not what Mora runs down there?

Falcons | J. Williams questionable for Week 10

Atlanta Falcons CB Jimmy F. Williams (ankle) missed at least a portion of practice Thursday, Nov. 9, and is questionable for Week 10.

Mora and Donatell (DC) are plain-Jane 4-3 guys who occasionally use zone schemes. However, with Hall being a prototype cover man, the Falcons run a lot of man-to-man.

This is correct. All teams run some Cover-2, but Atlanta is probably in the bottom quarter of snaps in two deep coverages.Donatell likes an aggressive scheme and prefers an eighth man in the box where possible to allow some extra pressure (think LeRoy Butler, Darren Sharper with a solid DL). Atlanta hasn't had enough healthy horses to run that kind of defense, though, so you haven't seen as much blitzing from the backers this year. Webster was on pace for 100 tackles because he's a terrible cover man and targeted incessantly.

Falcons | Williams will make his first start Week 10

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Atlanta Falcons CB Jimmy F. Williams will make his first regular-season start Week 10. Williams will replace CB Jason Webster (groin), who will miss at least a month and possibly the rest of the season with a groin injury.

WHERE IS THIS GUY????? :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Williams is atop the depth chart at corner entering mini-camp.

Very little thought was given to moving Williams to safety, Petrino said. Having scouted in college and watching film of Williams in limited action last season, it was determined early that Williams, down to 207 pounds from 215, would play right corner, opposite fellow Virginia Techie, DeAngelo Hall.

"We're excited about him," Petrino said. "He's been working hard. He's got a lot of energy. It will be fun to get to know him and see exactly how he operates at corner. We drafted him as a corner and we need a corner and that's what he's played. He didn't get a lot of opportunities last year. I try to take last year and put it aside and evaluate from this point on."

With the draft a month away, the decision to play Williams at corner could be a sign that the Falcons are targeting Landry or Florida safety Reggie Nelson with the top pick. Incumbent free safety Chris Crocker was solid against the run but a liability in deep coverage and could be replaced.

What becomes of last season's starting right cornerback Jason Webster remains to be seen, however Petrino saying there was a need for a right cornerback could signal his release.

Jene - thanks for the update (although I positive "he's moving to safety" would have been better). Can you educate a novice here? I would assume that as a young CB playing opposite one of the better CB's in the league, Williams will get picked on early (if not often) thus creating some nice stat lines at the beginning of the year. Is this a situation where an owner should wait it out and then possibly sell high?

I thought that would happen last season.

As did I. He had a couple of "decent" games, but he was not the true starter at any point (IIRC)

I'm not sure that I'd rate DeAngelo Hall much above league average after last season's play but Williams will be tested if he starts. Whether to sell high will depend on how well he plays the run and whether he shows the ball skills to continue to put up stats when the targets even out. Zimmer's scheme should provide stable value to an physical corner who plays the ball well in man coverage.

In my experience it's hard to sell any but the handful of elite CB's for anything, "high" or not. CB's just don't carry a lot of trade value.

No they don't. Rhonde Barber had a great year but even he was inconsistent and is getting old.

It depends on what the NFL team's defensive scheme entails + your IDP scoring system. Cover-2 CBs can have good value relative to the FS/SS positions.

I don't disagree with what you said, but in virtually any but the deepest leagues, unless you have an unusual scoring system if you look at the "Top Performers" menu in mfl.com and look only at CB's, it seems like a good 20-40% of the top 30 CB's aren't on any rosters. That's consistently been my experience. In my oldest dynasty league I'm pretty sure that my CB2 for at least half of every season has been someone who unexpectedly emerged who I've grabbed off of waivers. That's sometimes been true for my CB1 as well, and I'm not BTW talking about injury issues either. Shawn Springs was a waiver wire pickup and starter for me in 2004 when he had 5 or 6 sacks that year, for example. For that reason I just don't bother trading for CB's. I don't need to.
