Joan Rivers is dead (1 Viewer)

I forget which two comedians it was, but I recall listening to a podcast where two older comedians were saying that when Joan Rivers was filling in for Carson on The Tonight Show (and Carson was sort of mailing in some episodes because he had already been hosting for so long), Rivers was the better Tonight Show host during that period.
She was Carson's regular guest host for a while and was very good in the role. Whether you liked her schtick or not, she had an extremely sharp and quick wit so was very well suited for the Tonight Show format. Her own late night show on Fox was a commerical flop but so was every other attempt Fox made at carving out a late night niche.

Sad to see her go. She was a bridge from another era of comedy.
Good post...unless you remember that era it's tough to really understand how cutting edge she was for a female comic...

:goodposting: I always loved her stand up routine, especially when she threw in those OH! OH!s in there. I felt her red carpet snarkfest with her daughter was beneath her comedically.

A pioneer for women in comedy, no doubt.
Once you hit 80 showbiz options can be limited. They no longer make shows like The Love Boat.
I know. To me, it was cool to see her still be relevant; I just thought dumping on what people wear is too easy.
It seems easy until you see others try to do the same thing. Rivers benefited from her status and age so she was able to offend without being totally offensive. She could also afford better writers. Mrs Eephus likes to watch those shows and Rivers was usually the funniest one on the panel.

She was a pioneer for women, she was funny, she made me laugh and everyone was a punchline for Joan. One of the best comedians ever, perhaps the best female comedian of all time for some.

We have lost a lot of good comedians in the last few years. And there doesn't seem to be any replacements coming up the ranks.

Agreed.

She was a funny lady, too bad he had to stoop to that level.

Here's a clip of her SNL monologue.

I disagree with the bolded. Stand-up isn't as popular as it was in the 70s and 80s, but that doesn't mean their aren't good stand-up comedians coming up through the ranks. Amy Schumer is a great, young female comedian who is somewhat Joan Rivers-like.

I have the same sympathy for her she did for Palestinian children.
I had no idea about this until you posted it. But what I think is truly revealing is how political the left (with you as a representative) gets with entertainers and celebs that don't toe the usual liberal line when it comes to politics.

Can't even bring yourself to do a simple RIP, instead, you must -- must! -- ostracize and dehumanize the political opposition.

Imagine if the right acted this way about every left-wing entertainer or celebrity. So orthodox, this leftism, that it feels impelled to dehumanize everyone that disagrees with its own political opinions. The facade of tolerance of differing opinions always seems to slip just so in these instances, doesn't it?

And yet you must do it also.

Rivers did this for a living - I doubt she'd be upset.

Looks like the poster needs to google Rush Limbaugh and Robin Williams......

Nah, not really. I haven't gone into any thread where a celebrity, politician, or entertainment left-winger has died and proceeded to deliberately extend non-sympahty based solely on political opinions. I'm just pointing out what's being done here.

eta* And her political opinion(s) are and were generally peripheral to her act, unlike a lot of comedians of both her time and into the present. To express non-sympathies about a generally (she did do politics, but hell, she was friends with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor when they were all getting their starts) apolitical comedian like her is just weird and humorless.

Any day you want to make NCCommish and Rush equivalents, go ahead, because that's about the tonality of it, and they deserve each other.

Her job was to make people laugh, and she did. It's a rare breed that can do that consistently, and it's incredibly hard to do it for decades - right up to the days before you die. Like or hate her style, well, that's a matter of taste. But you have to have respect for her as a craftswoman.

but she would be funny

No way that body is biodegradable.

If they cremate her...the crematory will glow like the aurora borealis for years to come.

I heard the Hollywood Wax Museum purchased her remains. Not as a model or a prop...but as a cheap source of wax for future exhibits.

That was for you Joan...rest in peace.

I think it was that failed show that wrecked her career for a while. Nobody would return her calls and she got really depressed, considered suicide. Finally started over, did cheap standup gigs and eventually got the job with E!.
Yeah, when she got banned from the Tonight Show and her show died, she was screwed. Then her husband committed suicide. Which of course led to her most cringeworthy awesome joke ever.
Please to elaborate?
"My husband killed himself. And it was all my fault."

"We were making love, and I took the bag off my head."

RIP Joan Rivers. What a career she had - she opened so many doors for women in comedy.

Awards show red carpet coverage won't be the same without her.

"Cremate me? They should just melt me into Tupperware."

"The only three things that will outlive all of you are cockroaches, Twinkies and my face."

"Edgar was a good man. If I end up in Heaven, it's going to be Hell for him."

"Melissa is going to miss me terribly. That is if I do get into Heaven."

"Speaking of Hell, I don't know how my plastic surgeon is going to operate on the ashes."

I actually watched Fashion Police for a few years of awards shows. :bag:

RIP

The Tonight Show ban was some BS. Screw Leno for keeping her off just to suck up to Johnny and his antics.

I agree, really petty. How can you blame her for wanting her own show? Carson was basically saying she should be grateful to be his guest host.

Always loved Joan Rivers. Hilarious comedienne.

One of the few who put it all out there and did not give a crap what people thought.

Crappy news - this one hit harder than Robin Williams for me, oddly enough.

It's the arrogance of saying - you must inform me if you plan to do your own thing.

Then Leno enforcing the ban later. A ban based completely on Carson's crappy attitude. what a ####

Yeah Leno has always been a malignant pile of dog####. That he ever beat Letterman in the ratings is more proof that Americans have no taste.

Her quick wit was amazing, and she never lost an ounce of it in her senior years. RIP Funny Lady

Leno is an unfunny doosh.

However, Letterman didn't have her on much either because of Johnny. IIRC, she was only his show once until Johnny died.

ETA: Turns out she was only on Letterman once until 5 years after Johnny died.

I don't have to imagine it at all. And by the way it isn't about toeing some line it's about being a ####### human being who can see past the end of your own nose and have some compassion. When given the chance to show some humanity she took a pass and then went on to vigorously defend her abhorrent comments. Screw her.

Had no idea that ### clown leno kept the ban on.. What a #####.

She had her moments. Only thing that was irritating was her obsession with passing on her career to her no talent daughter.

She said, “I am both saddened and disappointed that my statement about the tragedy of civilian casualties was totally taken out of context. What I said and stand behind is, war is hell and unfortunately civilians are victims of political conflicts. We, The United States, certainly know this as 69 years later we still feel the guilt of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

“The media, as usual, has decided to only quote the most out of context and inflammatory non sequitur rather than giving an accurate account of what my intentions were behind the statement. Along with every other sane person in this world, I am praying for peace. It is stupid and wrong and I am tired of bearing the brunt of attacks by people who want to sell newspapers or gain ratings by creating a scandal about me that is non-existent.”
