I forget which two comedians it was, but I recall listening to a podcast where two older comedians were saying that when Joan Rivers was filling in for Carson on The Tonight Show (and Carson was sort of mailing in some episodes because he had already been hosting for so long), Rivers was the better Tonight Show host during that period.

She was Carson's regular guest host for a while and was very good in the role. Whether you liked her schtick or not, she had an extremely sharp and quick wit so was very well suited for the Tonight Show format. Her own late night show on Fox was a commerical flop but so was every other attempt Fox made at carving out a late night niche.

Sad to see her go. She was a bridge from another era of comedy.

Good post...unless you remember that era it's tough to really understand how cutting edge she was for a female comic...

I know. To me, it was cool to see her still be relevant; I just thought dumping on what people wear is too easy.

It seems easy until you see others try to do the same thing. Rivers benefited from her status and age so she was able to offend without being totally offensive. She could also afford better writers. Mrs Eephus likes to watch those shows and Rivers was usually the funniest one on the panel.

I disagree with the bolded. Stand-up isn't as popular as it was in the 70s and 80s, but that doesn't mean their aren't good stand-up comedians coming up through the ranks. Amy Schumer is a great, young female comedian who is somewhat Joan Rivers-like.

To express non-sympathies about a generally (she did do politics, but hell, she was friends with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor when they were all getting their starts) apolitical comedian like her is just weird and humorless.

Her job was to make people laugh, and she did. It's a rare breed that can do that consistently, and it's incredibly hard to do it for decades - right up to the days before you die. Like or hate her style, well, that's a matter of taste. But you have to have respect for her as a craftswoman.

I think it was that failed show that wrecked her career for a while. Nobody would return her calls and she got really depressed, considered suicide. Finally started over, did cheap standup gigs and eventually got the job with E!.

Yeah, when she got banned from the Tonight Show and her show died, she was screwed. Then her husband committed suicide. Which of course led to her most cringeworthy awesome joke ever.
