Jobs you wish you woulda got... (1 Viewer)

On my morning walk around my business park, I got to thinking about some jobs I had applied for that I really wish I would have got.

First, I remember about 15 years ago I was talking to a company that I believe was a consultant to the federal government and local municipalities that would drive all over the country checking certain stretches of highway for road noise, etc.  They would outfit a car with special sensors and would report on the data.  Basically the job was to drive all over the country and fix the onboard equipment if necessary.  I absolutely LOVE driving for work (or for the heck of it... I actually drove around the country for 45 days after college).

Second one was about 4 years ago, would have got us back to living in Austin, TX (sigh).  Company was one of the major manufacturers of heavy highway construction equipment.  They were headquartered in Tennessee but wanted to expand their work in Texas.  Job would have been driving all over the state, talking to contractors, municipalities, etc., about what kind of equipment they needed.  Basically "pre-sales".  Again, love to drive, would have had me all over the beautiful state of Texas and paid awesome.  Company truck, work from home, etc.  Really bummed about this one.

So, what say you... anything you look back on and wish you woulda landed?

I only had 1 job I interviewed for and didn't get....and from what I heard it was a blessing.

And tbh Ive only had 4 jobs since college.

Developer - left this job because my division closed

Developer- 10 years with company

Developer/tester/joat - 5 ish

Current job. But my current job is basically the same as my prior.

Look at me?

I think my regret is I didn't look around more when I was younger and try something different

I kind of regret not moving to the bigger city (in my case Toronto) before I was married as well. Similar to you, I've got most jobs I've applied to but I have two degrees and live in a relatively small city, so I think I'm just better qualified than most people in my area. I also am/have been qualified for better paying jobs in a bigger city but circumstances (girlfriends, wife, my dad's death when I was in my early 20s) never seemed to make sense for me. No complaints though, my current job pays me "Toronto money" that goes a lot farther where I am an hour outside the city.

Working at Wright Patterson AFB, mid 80s, way down underneath in the top secret area, with the extra terrestrials. Smoking weed in the 70's cost me that gig.

manager of a certain female singer when i was in that biz in the 70s. best female guitar player i've ever seen (jammed w Hendrix in Village after-hour joints), in the top 5 biggest voices. sweet person, but a total nutjob about her music. hammered the #### out of every song she sang, every song she wrote was composed to give herself max ops for frenetic yodel-singing and pedalized guitar flourishes. yet she was a 1st-class interpreter of other peoples' material, so i knew there was some there there. insinuated my way into her world, had her about to see my concept of her, thought sure the company i worked for was gonna drop her, so started the poaching process. when i displeased her w some aspect along the way to our freedom and deliverence, she kinda ratted me out to my boss. i got sued out of the business, within 3-4 years she was living on a pig farm in Michigan or sumn. you wouldnt recognize her name if i told y'all, but i cant because of the nature of the setttlement. Joni Mitchell is the only more-talented female musician i've seen before or since.

Only job I interviewed for and didn't get was for an internship with the MN Twins when I was still in college.  Miscommunication between myself and interviewer (who eventually became a bigwig in the player personel dept) lead him to believe I was going to continue to stay in school during the internship.  I would have dropped out for a chance to spend the entire summer at the ballpark in a heartbeat.  Life probably would have gone down a dramatically different track had I done that.

I had an offer to be the Director of Archeology at a large state park. The position oversaw the Museum and all historic projects on site. Would have been huge for me, but it was a pay cut and was a move about 6 hours away from our families. I still think about where I would be if I had taken it. It is tough to find any job in the field, let alone an executive position.

In mid to late 90's I was studying IT at Oklahoma State University.  Good friend of mine leaves college early to take an IT job with a company that's predominantly online and is getting started by buying the old book warehouse companies, in our area it was Doubleday book club.  My friend asks me if I want to join him, I turn it down because I feel like I should get my degree.  I only had a year or two left.

Well my friend has been at the company ever since.  Over 20 years.  He's now Director of IT Infrastructure (or something like that) and relocated to the Seattle area years ago.  But he owns a house here in Oklahoma, and a few others.

The company was Amazon.  He got in early.  Ridiculously early.  I have no idea what he's worth now, but sometimes I still wonder what would have happened if I left school early to take that job.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty happy with how my life is turning out.  But I could have gotten in early at one of the biggest and most disruptive companies in the world.

Not a job but I wish I took the recruiting process better. My dad and I didn't really know. I lived in a small town and was kind of shy.  I was recruited by a few small colleges to play ball.   I was injured and decided against it and then toiled in ####ty men's leagues.

That's probably my biggest "wish".   That I rehabbed, took the tours and played

I’ve had two “real” jobs in my life. Loved them both. In job one I worked for years to get a certain position, there were only two available.  When those two finally came open, I applied.  They went to someone who had one year experience, but grew up as the big bosses next door neighbor.  The other position went to a minority who didn’t even want it, but that was part of the agreement to hire the bosses neighbor and keep the board happy.

I started applying the next day and left for my current job soon after.  No regrets, but that one stung really hard.
