Joe Flacco to start week 1 for Ravens (1 Viewer)

For those of you who, like me, play matchups with your DEF position, I think Cincy just moved up the rankings in week 1.
 Things are ugly in Baltimore. The biggest concern I had with Flacco is he seems to hold onto the ball too long. He's gonna get blitzed to death. I start Flacco all year and gain him the experience (Even if out of necessity, I don't know why you start him and then bench him). You aren't going to the playoffs with Troy Smith/Joey Harrington either.

Cincy's D isn't exactly intimidating. I think for a rookie to make his first start, playing Cincy in Baltimore isn't the worse scenerio. He could end up having a good game.

I don't know if he is going to have a "good game." But this just isn't the worse scenerio, it's the absolute best scenerio you could hope for. This is a really good gauge to judge both offensive teams. If you're at home and playing Cinci, if you can't do anything offensively, you're can't be counted on all season long. How can you not start Mason this week if you can't start him versus Cinci at home? How can you not start Ray Rice if you can't start them versus Cinci? The worst thing you could do is bench your Raven players, see them to decent and then get caught up into thinking they're actually pretty good and then start them 1 week to late and miss your opportunity.I don't have any Raven players except for a backup kicker in Stover who maybe I'll start. I am starting both Housh and COC as well as Perry in a flex option.I look around at a lot of the games this week, and it's tricky. There are a lot of guys you're not sure of and on top of it, some of the matchups don't appear to be great. You don't like on paper the Jags running game versus TennesseeYou don't love Carolina's running game on the road versus SDYou can't like Ryan Grant in MinnyYou don't love Larry Johnson in NEI think in this Cinci/Baltimore game you have some guys that DO have favorable matchups.

I actually debated whether to use the word good or decent, and decided to go with good. He really hasn't looked bad in preseason, and he didn't throw an interception. If he can manage the game well enough, I think the Ravens have a chance.

Well stated. This IS the best possible scenario for a rookie QB. The Bengals defense shouldn't scare anybody.

This is the right move long term. It's also an indication the Ravens have given up this year.
How is this a sign the Ravens have given up this year? Who should they start week 1? Boller can't play because he is injured. Troy Smith can't play, because he is too weak from losing 13 pounds last week from an infection due to his tonsilitis. He just got out of the hospital. Flacco has started the last two preseason games because of those two being out. Who should the Ravens start this week instead of Flacco? I know you are a Steelers fan so maybe you are bias towards the Ravens, but I don't see how their situation is a sign of them giving up on the year.

i don't think they had a choice, flacco is the only qb healthy
Exactly. He is the starter by default. Smith should be healthier by next week, but Boller won't be, and he might have to have surgery. The signing of possibly Harrington is due to the fact they are very thin at QB right now.

I dont agree at all. Teams "giving up" early in th year or half way through or even late in the year happens to be the biggest myth out there. Do you think coaches, GMs and players work 15 hour days and build their resume over years so that they can assess a situation early then go get a record of 2-14 all so they can get a high pick next year? They dont. Not ever. Not only are they not giving up on a season, they are not giving up on a practice, a quarter during the game or an inch of yardageBAL has had numerous injuries (McGahee, Boller, Ed REed, various O-line) and they are playig the only players available to them aside from street free agents. Is Flacco a horrible week 1 QB for the Ravens? Probably. But trust me, the Ravens are not thinking about the future, not even in an abstract way. They actually are playing for now by starting Flacco instead of a Joey Harrington/Chris Redman type, as the experience without preparation could be harmful to the rookie long term . (Not thaht i buy much into that myth either, good players can play regardless).

Bump Cincy D? If ANYONE is relying on Cincy's D your draft went terribly wrong. They aren't "ownable".
:goodposting: they were top 16 last year in most fantasy leagues
Yah they put up some big games last year for team Def. Like, week 1, ravens4 Fumble Recoveries (from Opponent) 2 Interceptions 2 Sacked a QB 1 Defensive/Special Teams TDs 13 Offensive Points Against That's a pretty big week in any format. Lets check week 10 vs ravens just for ####s and giggles4 Fumble Recoveries (from Opponent) 2 Interceptions 2 Sacked a QB 7 Offensive Points Against Gee, monster week again. I sense a theme. But yah, totally unplayable. :confused:In a number of short bench leagues I pick the best D weekly from the WW. While I didn't play Cinci week 1, I sure did week 10. =)

Bump Derrick Mason way up.

Check out Preseason Week 3 stats and it should be the closest thing to what we may see on Sunday.

Mason 6 rec, 85 yds, 1 TD from Flacco

I will play Mason with confidence against the Bengals porous DEF.

Preseason Week 3
