Joe Girardi gets the nod (1 Viewer)

Link

The Yankees officially offered their managerial job to Joe Girardi on Monday morning and he is expected to accept it, a source has told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told Don Mattingly and Tony Pena that they will not be getting the job.

I got this email from a buddy this morning, was this news last night?

First of all, here's another example of why the world hates the Yankees and A-Rod. They have to steal the headlines. First A-Rod steals the headlines from the RedSox and then the Yankees "leak" the information that their new manager will be Girardi to steal the headlines from A-Rod. They are both pathetic sore losers.

I heard it just now on radio and then checked for a link and found the ESPN article with a 12:01 pm time stamp.

The NY press has been speculating for a week now...It looked like Girardi would get the nod, but it was never leaked...Why is it that Boston fans have to have such a grudge about EVERYTHING?You just won the world series for the second time in 4 years and you're worrying about Yankee managerial rumors stealing your thunder? That's the pathetic part, IMO...

FWIW, I'm pretty sure it was leaked within baseball circles since the Airhead on the pregame show asked Girardi if he had any news to report during the pregame show and he had a big smirk on his face. I think the Yankees were just holding off until the WS was over.

No it was disrespect to Boston.

Girardi's poker face on the postgame show last night needed a little bit of work.

As soon as they cut to him last night, I said to my wife: "Only the new manager of the Yankees would look that irritated by having to comment on the Sox winning the World Series..."

Right so announcing in the 7th inning that ARod is now a free agent wasn't classless? I asked my buddy when he heard:

Front page of the Star Ledger Sports this morning. The article says not official, but practically a done deal barring any interference by George. Hank, Hal and Cashman are all in agreement. RedSox get a tiny column at bottom of page. Class-less.

You have to love the mindset of the Boston sports fan... I forget who said it but they summed it up perfectly with (and I'm paraphrasing)....If Jabar Gafney were in China and there were a nuclear explosion... the headlines in all the Boston papers would read "Pat's Receiver Hurt in Explosion".....

How much ink do you expect a NJ paper to spend on the Sox winning?YOU WON THE WORLD SERIES

Enjoy it...

Don't waste time and energy trying to figure out what else you can turn into a deliberate disrespect or slight against the Sox...

You just come off looking petty and small...

Here's a question Cappy...What's more annoying?

The presumptuous entitlement of Yankee fans or the martyr complexes and complaining of Red Sox fans?

They're both pretty bad. I imagine the entitlement of Yankee fans would be worse if they had just won the WS. It's close though.

I agree, it was pretty obvious from Gerardi's reaction something went down. Zelasko knew it as well.Who cares though, the Yanks handled it fine. Citing a NJ paper for a leak is laughable in this case.

One guy (Alias) hardly represents Red Sox nation. But be annoyed all you want, sounds like you want to complain about something.
I'm not saying every single Sox fan is like this, but many many of the ones I know are...I'm not annoyed at all...I was looking for a non Yanks or Sox fan's perspective on it...

Well, Joe is the officially in the catbird seat. By all reports, he's a bright baseball man, clearly a bright man independent of baseball as a Northwestern graduate and he was a big part of the success that went on here as a player. This could be the begining of an amazing relationship.

But my advice to Girardi is this, watch your back. Joe Torre, Don Mattingly, Tony LaRussa, Connie Mack, Miller Huggins, Sparky Anderson, Casey Stengel, **** Williams and Whitey Herzog put together couldn't keep this team afloat next year if these young pitchers don't continue their upward arc. I hope he was careful what he wished for, because he just got it. I wish him the best, and I feel good about his chances of succeeding, but if he has a high profile flameout here, thats two tarnished jobs in a row, and he might be holding the stick next to that old queen Kay for quite a long time.

Mattingly is going to have a bruised ego and rightly so. I don't know that he was the best choice, but looking at it strictly from his perspective, he can't feel good about this and I don't think he'd work under Cashman. I think think Brian remains "on a big hook" next year, and he could go. If things don't pan out next year, I think we see an Oppeheimer/Mattingly regime to open the new stadium. I don't want to see Cashman go at any cost. I really respect the job he did this year with the young staff, but if I could see the organization going that way.

One thing that definitely worries me is how so many of the young Marlins pitchers broke down this year after a season with Girardi...

I'd have to do research into pitch counts, etc, but Olsen, Johnson, Sanchez and Willis all either suffered serious injuries or saw their performance plummet...

Actually you are the one looking like an idiot here, read the quotes in this post. I was not the one that was #####ing. I know it hurts seeing the Red Sox win the World Series for the 2nd time in 4 years, go ahead and bash as many sox fans as you want if it will make you feel better.

:banned: You're the one who posted it here...

You're not going to try and play it off like you weren't agreeing with it, are you?

And guess what? It doesn't hurt one bit...

The Sox were the better team and deserved the win...

The Yanks were a flawed team that gave me an entertaining season...

Congrats Alias -- you have officially become the ThisGuy of Red Sox fans. I woke up this morning and picked up my local town weekly paper, and guess what...the front cover has some b.s. about the town council and school budget. AND NOT A WORD ABOUT THE SOX. Downright disgusting if you ask me.I'd obviously rather not see the Sox win, and I thought it would annoy me to no end seeing them celebrating again. But at this point, they already broke the "curse". Now it's just like if the White Sox or Cardinals or Angels won it. It's not my team, so I'm not happy. But it's not like I can't sleep at night now that Boston has won it again. I'm much more annoyed at the fact that it was a crappy series that was almost completely lacking in any sort of drama whatsoever.

Congrats on the series win.

So, enlighten me....why did Girardi get the job...and/or why did Mattingly not get the job? Lots of angles here, Cashman, Bosses, Torre's sidekick, brains, clubhouse/players, good looks, etc.

Rumors are Girardi wowed them during the interview. Most of the Yankee people wanted Mattingly, Cashman wanted Girardi. After the interviews they pretty much were so wowed they all decided Girardi.

Well Mattingly has declined a coaching position for next year.
That was expected. His ego took a major hit and declining was the best thing to do.Look for most of the current coaching staff to end up in LA is Torre gets the Dodgers job.

Yeah, we've certainly never seen any Yankees pitchers get overused by Joe Torre.

Relievers, for sure...But the Yanks haven't had young starting pitching in the entire Torre era really (save for Pettitte a decade ago)...

My point is simply that there may be legitimate concerns surrounding Girardi's pitching management, but it wasn't exactly a Torre strong point either. Girardi seems like a smart guy, so maybe he learned from his mistakes.

According to Olney, one person Girardi would want on his staff would be former Cubs pitcher Mike Harkey, perhaps as pitching coach.
 I was hoping they signed Mazzone or at least Dave Eiland whos been their AAA pitching coach

Torre abused veteran arms in the pen, which often hurt them late in the year and/or the following season...That's a big difference from blowing out the elbows and shoulders of some of the best young pitching talent in baseball with high pitch counts...I hope he learned from his year in Florida...

This guy sucks. He has no clue how to handle a bullpen. How much longer will he get a free pass for the '09 title?

I'd make HUCKS the new manager if it meant getting rid of this clown.

Being 20 games over .500 in July just ain't what it used to be.
Irrelevant. You or I could manage that team and they'd have the same winning %. No joke. If you watched this team every day, you'd agree with my assessment. He removes guys just for the sake of removing them. "By the book Joe"...Rapada comes in for two batters today. One hits a harmless grounder to 2nd, and he whiffs the next guy. Well naturally, Joe had seen enough at that point. Let's bring in Sh-tBird Eppley. Single. Sac bunt. Single. Thanks for coming. This happens constantly. This team might be undefeated without a retodded manager.

huh? girardos biggest strength has been his handling of the bullpen and you have agreed with this sentiment sevral times in the yankees thread. you really are annoying. teams get swept. it happens

Yeah, no. You must have me confused with some other kooky fan.I spent the past 20 minutes going through every Yankees *OFFICIAL* season thread since Girardi got the job four years ago. I see only two instances where I mention Girardi and the bullpen in the same post.

Way to over-manage the bullpen, Joe!!!
LINK
Seriously, is there any particular reason Chan Ho Yak is even ON THIS TEAM???

Much less in a tight game against a hated rival?

Girardi's moves are puzzling sometimes, but since he won a title he'll never be questioned all year.
WTF is Joe supposed to goto? Their bullpen ####in sucks. Park, Logan, Marte, Robertson have all sucked this year and Joba was unavailable.
Joe babies the bullpen too much. Of course, Mr. Torre was just as bad, if not worse at managing the bully.
