Joe Montana's legacy (1 Viewer)

Montana: 23 playoff games

Brady: 22 playoff games

Eli M: 11 games

Brees: 9 games

Rodgers: 7 games

I'd hold off on Brees, Rodgers, and even Eli until they approach the number of games Montana and Brady have played.
That's what I said. Forget Brady and Roethlisberger. Its too late for them. Its probably too late for Eli as well, really. All eyes should be on Brees and Rodgers now, as they are currently on trajectory to get there.
It's apples and oranges. Different eras, different rules. Brees or Rodgers would have to surpass Montana by a fair amount before they could be considered better IMO.
Brees is annihilating Joe Montana's playoff TD / INT ratio. 22 TDs to 4 INTs is insane.
And if he keeps it up for another 10+ playoff games, he'll be in the conversation. So far he has played in 9 playoff games.
That's correct. All eyes should be on Brees and Rodgers. They are on the correct trajectory. No-one else is. Brees is 32, so he potentially has up to 9 years to keep it going. Brutal standards but the bar is high.

Really wish I could have seen Johnny Unitas week in and week out in his prime. I would guess very few folks on this forum are old enough to make that claim. Not to mention, you would have needed to live in the Baltimore area to get his games on TV. Directv was something nobody could have even imagined back then.

I say this because it's hard to say "Joe was the greatest, period." We haven't seen ALL of the greats, and you cannot go strictly by numbers based on how the game has evolved. But I think Johnny U (and most other great QBs) could be great in any era. Great quarterbacks and great running backs of the past, IMO, would be great today. It gets a little more dicey with other positions. Could Jack Lambert play MLB in today's game at his playing weight of 215? (Put aside advanced nutrition and weight training and supplements ... I mean just take Jack Lambert circa 1975 and plop him into a modern day defense). I think he would get swallowed up by the enormous guards of today. Could great DBs from the 50s and 60s cover some of the great wideouts today? I'm not so sure.

Sorry for rambling. Just typing out loud. I guess the bottom line is, if you gave me the choice of ANY quarterback in history to win one game for me to save my life, the other ten players on offense being equal, I'd choose Joe in a heartbeat. Understand, he's not the best thrower I've ever seen. That would be Dan Marino. It took your breath away to see Marino throw a football. Lighting-fast release with a vapor trail attached to it. And Elway was no slouch either. But Montana was the best winner I've ever seen. I have so much respect for his game.

IMO Unitas and Montana are alone in the top tier of all time QBs.

Per Sean Glennon's twitter, Brady just tied Montana's number of regular season starts ... 146.

How they compare
The biggest ones that matter - SB record and All-Pro's - Montana has a huge lead on Brady. If Brady doesn't win another SB I think it will be a long time before Montana has another challenger for GOAT.
I'm shocked that the passing yards are as close as they are. Seems like Brady has thrown every down for the past 7 years.

That is impressive. Montana never hit 4000 yards but he was remarkable consistent.
