(April 17, 2007) -- When the NFL came knocking on Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas' door, it just as easily could have found the sign, "Gone Fishin'. " Despite a personal e-mail from commissioner Roger Goodell, Thomas rejected the NFL's repeated written and verbal invitations to attend the draft-week festivities in New York.

Thomas wants to maintain a years-old tradition in which he spends draft day fishing for coho salmon on Lake Michigan with his dad.

:kicksrock: You can always go fishing with your dad...how often does someone get to be drafted in the NFL and how often does someone get to be a top 5 pick.   I would never want him on my team. I saw a NFL Draft feature on last years draft and Vernon Davis broke down into tears....there is a guy who worked hard to get where he is and has a respect for what it means to be in the NFL. Thomas doesn't even show up.........LAME

:scared: Joe Thomas's stock just raised in my eyes. He's not a prima donna. Just wants to go fishing before training camp with the old man. What is there not to get?

yeah, too bad his relationship with his dad is more important then the draft.don't know much about him, maybe he just doesn't like a lot of personal attention - afterall, he is a lineman, not a wr.

I think that's awesome, me and pops don't get along so well but I'd be very honored if my own son wanted to keep a tradition such as this with me someday.

So if he was sitting in his living room with his Dad this would be better? I can see how someone wouldn't want to go through the ups and downs of every second of the draft. I can assure you that Aaron Rodgers was wishing he had gone fishing on his draft day.LAUNCH

"Dad, we're still on for fishing on the day of the draft, right?"

"No, Joe. I want you to go be on TV for all those millions of people who desperately need you. Be like Oprah, Joe."

I wonder how the fishing conversation will go:

Joe T - "Well Dad, you're my Dad.....and I love you man!"

Dad - "You're not getting my Bud Light, Joey."

How ironic would it be if Joe Thomas is drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, who were formerly coached by Dennis Green that preached the virtues of "God, family, and then football"

Scientist should take his ball and go home.

Call me strange, but if some company wants to pay me millions of dollars so that I can take care of my family for the rest of our lives then I am going to show up for the dog and pony show for a couple of days.

THEN I would go fishing with my old man for the rest of the spring.

This isn't all that big a deal, but I do find it a tad odd.

I applaud Joe Thomas for spending quality time with his dad even on a big day like this. You never know when someones time is up. What if he goes to this draft show and the next day is dad died. I'm sure he would think about that the rest of his life. He should be with his dad if he wishes to be.

I think its an awesome gesture that he is going to be out fishing with his Dad when he gets that call. Has anyone with the same last name ever gone 1,2 in the draft before?

I guess he is not only going to be drafted in the top 5 but he is also going to go fishng with Dad. Now that's a win / win situation.

LMAO at you guys!

You, like me, are stoked for the draft. If any of your old papas ask you to go fishing on draft day, 9 of 10 of you would turn him down. But since Joe Thomas is going to miss it, oh what a great upstanding guy, missing the day he gets drafted to fish with pops. I want him as my team's LT.

LMAO

"Uh, Dad, I love you. But I'm getting drafted on Saturday, do you care if I go to NY?"

This will totally ruin the draft for me.

I was really looking forward to watching Joe Thomas put on a hat of his new team, hug his crying mother, and give stock answers to stock questions for two minutes. Something that exciting only comes along every 15 minutes during the draft.

Don't sell it short. Afterall we got to see Eli wear a SD cap and pout for the camera, only to later don a NYG hat with big smiles from Archie and him. We got to see the Philly fans boo the heck out of McNabb. We got to see the Vikings flub their picks 2x in a row. We got to the free fall of Aaron Rodgers. This stuff is money.I mean...the twists and turns...it's like a friggin soap opera.

What if he has a tradition to watch the Super Bowl with his dad down at "Joe's Bar"?

Joe: "Sorry, team. After I am done fishing I'll catch the game on the tube. I'll be rooting for you!"

Not that any of the teams drafting at the top will make it to the big game anytime soon.

This is a once in a lifetime event. He should be there. However, it is really a non-issue.

True, it isn't the same thing. He might actually make it to a Super Bowl multiple times in his life.As I said, it really is a non-issue.

Green Bay sure did. It's not like he actually does anything on draft day except sit there are wait. I'd rather sit there and fish.

I'd imagine he'll bring a radio. Maybe a cell phone.

I'm wondering how many TV channels will send a reporter to Lake Michigan now.

Looks like Joe's not the only one going

I think it's cool that Joe Thomas likes to fish and spend time with his Dad. He will still get drafted as early as he was going to be. I would bet he will field a call on a cell phone (if he has signal). After the weekend he will fly out to his new team and get to work. It's nice to have a quality weekend fishing with Dad and get drafted to a team that will give you a multi-million dollar contract. What a weekend. I'm sure he will be working hard and be very busy after theis weekend so why not get some time in with Dad? I like it.

Not a big deal, as I agree that it isn't really critical that he be there.

HOWEVER, I don't understand what the big deal is on the other side either. Why is that particular weekend so important fishing-wise? Can't he go a couple of days later or earlier? Just seems kind of stupid to me.

If it's me, I want to make a good impression on my team and my new employer (NFL) who is going to spend many millions of dollars on me. Yeah, it's kind of schmaltzy. But if my new employer wanted me to be there, I'd be there and sit through the schmaltz.

It's not like his dad is having surgery or anything, in which case family would absolutely trump my job. If I am missing part of the story, and this really is the ONLY (or best) time he and his dad can go fishing this year for some odd reason, OK, I get it. But if it's a fishing trip that could just as easily be taken some other time? Just go to the fricken draft and fish later. "Pop, how bout we sit through the draft for a couple of hours since it seems to mean a lot to the guys who are going to set us up for life, and go fishing next weekend?"
