Hint, he's been in the news of late and is about to be in the news more soon.

Click on the attached pic for the answer. He's on the left.

And please don't spoil it for at least a little while.

From Wiki:

Helton received a scholarship from the University of Tennessee to play both football and baseball, after turning down a deal from the San Diego Padres. During his freshman and sophomore years at Tennessee he backed up Heath Shuler at quarterback. Starting his junior season he was the back-up behind Jerry Colquitt and ahead of Peyton Manning. After an injury to Colquitt, Helton got the starting spot only to face injury himself and be replaced by Manning. After first seeing Manning tossing the football in practice, Helton immediately acknowledged his abilities and switched to a full-time baseball player. Following his junior baseball season Helton was drafted by the Colorado Rockies.

Interesting article about the Rockies.

Helton came to baseball as a first-round pick in 1995 after quarterbacking the Tennessee Volunteers. Helton beat out freshman Peyton Manning for the No. 2 spot behind Jerry Colquitt with the Vols.

When Colquitt was hurt in the season opener, Helton took over in a 25-23 loss to UCLA. He started the next game, a 41-23 win over the Georgia Bulldogs, then lost 31-0 to the Florida Gators. He injured a medial collateral ligament in the first half of a 24-21 loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Manning took over to become Tennessee's career leading passer.

so, is it Helton?
Yes. Todd Helton. That's two pretty successful athletes on that team. Too bad it took Tee Martin to finally get them over the hump. :)

Found this wiki blurb interesting.
Martin has had offers from the Oakland Raiders to return to their team as of September 21, 2007. According to Oakland they want to incorporate him as a wide receiver/quarterback option.

The thing I remember about that is Helton's quote about football compared to baseball...basically saying that playing QB in the SEC, then NFL, is by far the toughest job in sports...especially compared to 1st base.

Yet he makes more 98% of NFL players, right?

I never know what to believe with Wiki. Was it because of the inury or really because he say Manning throwing balls that he went to full time baseball. The fact that anyone can edit this stuff always makes me wonder. Still laughing at a fellow student qouting Wiki all thoughout his paper in my intro Pysch class. My prof decided to make an example of it not being an academic reference. He didn't mention the student but it wasn't hard to figure it out when he turned beat red and slowly started slinking down into his chair. It is a good start to find out where to look further but I never fully believe alot of it...Anyways sorry to hijack. Whether or not it is true or not it is interesting and considering Mannings talent believable.

Good luck with that. He started in the CFL for the Blue Bombers. Seen him play. He was terrible. Glad that experiment ended quickly.

Interesting thing I remembered here. Helton was QB. It was in the 3rd game, I think, that Helton got hurt and little freshman Peyton had to go in and finish. All giddy and excited, he goes into the huddle and starts yapping and talking and trying to pump up the team "hey, we can do this". I forget who the lineman was but he turned to Peyton and told him to "shut up and just call the play."

that's my favorite peyton story. it's pitch perfect all the way around...

I remember they played 3 different QBs in the loss to Florida that year. Shortly after that Manning was the guy full time.

Technically he did replace Helton, but really he replaced Heath Shuler as "the man" after a half season delay.

I was at that game with my best friend, a big UT fan, I'm a MSU fan, we won in the last 30 seconds of the game. I still gig him about that!

I think I remember this being mentioned on TV during this week's game or the week 5 game as the Rockies were streaking.

I can't remember exactly, as most commentary blends into the background as I sit watching the games on my couch with my laptop on my lap as I click between Gamecenter tabs on CBS Sportsline.

I'm sure Helton isn't too bummed about being replaced by a future Hall of Famer.

The thing I remember most is that Jerry Colquitt sat behind Heath Shuler for 3 years, plays less than 10 plays as a starter, and is hurt for the season.
