I'd put Taylor ahead of Denver but both could write a song, not something most coffee shop dudes are able to do.
Amongst these 3 I would go Cash first, then Taylor in second by just a hair over Denver.
This brings up an interesting quandary for me. Love all three. Spent probably the first third of my life as a huge Denver fan, the second third as a Taylor fan, then the last third as more of a Cash fan. Can't decide who has the best voice, Cash or Taylor. Denver is third. The only one I've seen live is Taylor, and he gave a great performance. IMO, Denver was the best songwriter. Here are their most recognizable songs (to me):Taylor -

Carolina in My Mind

Fire and Rain

Sweet Baby James

Country Road

You've Got a Friend

Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight

Walking Man

How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)

Mexico

Shower the People

Cash -

I Walk the Line

Don't Take Your Guns to Town

In the Jailhouse Now

Busted

Ring of Fire

Folsom Prison Blues

Daddy Sang Bass

A Boy Named Sue

The Man In Black

Understand Your Man

The Man Comes Around

Personal Jesus

Hurt

Denver -

Follow Me

Take Me Home, Country Roads

Rocky Mountain High

I'd Rather Be a Cowboy

Farewell Andromeda

Sunshine on My Shoulders

Annie's Song

Back Home Again

Sweet Surrender

Thank God I'm a Country Boy

The Eagle And The Hawk

I'm Sorry

Windsong

Fly Away

Looking for Space

My Sweet Lady

Calypso
There was a big discussion on Cash and Hurt here. To me his version said so much more than the original and I would say IMO it's Cash's best work for a long time. Fire and Rain would be my favorite Taylor tune. I guess I go Rocky Mountain High for Denver.
Completely agree about Hurt. Fire and Rain or Carolina would be my Taylor pick. As for Denver, I like his more mellow stuff like Annie's Song or Poems, Prayers, and Promises.

Annie's Song would be a close second for me.

Can't stand him or James Taylor. Both very talented, but I just find the music to be boring, weak, and lacking any edge or balls. You could easily find a sandal-wearing, guitar strumming little hippy fruit singing at a coffee shop with equal creativity and chops.
Agreed

if you don't like Annie's song you have a black hole where a heart should be and are doomed to a loveless lonely existence

i pity you

This one's my favorite.

Oh Ruuuuuuby,

Don't take your guns to town.

I also like "My Own...Personal...Jesus...someone to hear your prayers, someone who cares...".

Going to post the video on my wifes facebook page and see what kind of response she gets from her nosey frineds. In fact I may use this as entirely new schtick. Need sappy songs to post weekly

I've never completely gotten this line of thinking. If it were not for the original being written the cover version wouldn't even exist.

Not sure what your point is. Plenty of people have written and performed songs that someone else did better. IMO that is the case here. The Cash rendition seemed more poignant, raw and powerful to me.

As for Denver, I like his more mellow stuff like Annie's Song or Poems, Prayers, and Promises.
:lmao:

Is "Grandma's Feather Bed" just to hard-core Rockin for ya?
Not sure what you mean. I like a wide variety of stuff, including Tool and Queens of the Stone Age. So you don't like ANY mellow music?
That's not what I was :lmao: at.

You said you liked Denver's more mellow stuff, insinuating he had stuff that was not mellow.

Oh ok, I see what you're saying. I guess "mellow" was the wrong word. Should have said "slower" or "reflective".

If you can't get up and kick the #### off your heels to "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" well, then, I don't know what to say.

In the fall of 1980 I was a freshman at WVU and the new football stadium was opening. They hired John Denver to sing Country Roads and the National Anthem. Just before kickoff his helicopter landed, he ran on to the field and sang the songs, never once turning around to face the student section which at that time was the 50 yard line. After he finished he ran over to his helicopter and flew away. We all booed. Not sure what I was expecting but felt a little short changed. First time I saw a money grab I guess.

Well, I love my ma and I love my pa, I love granny and grandpa too
I've been fishin' with my uncles, I wrestled my cousin
I even kissed Aunt Lou, ewwwwww!
But if I ever had to make a choice I guess it oughta be said
That I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road
For grandma's feather bed

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" is first radio song I learned to play on the guitar when I was little.

The Orioles play Thank God I'm a Country Boy for their 7th inning stretch.

One of my favorite parts of the game (just after the beer drinking and the amazing grabs by the ball girls).

He sang about West Virginia an awful lot.

How did he die?
Coroner's Report: John Denver Had Sunshine On Shoulders At Time Of Crash

MONTEREY, CA—According to a Monterey County coroner’s report released Monday, singer John Denver had a shoulder-sunshine level of .27—more than two times the legal limit—at the time of his fatal airplane crash into Monterey Bay on Oct. 12. "Our autopsy discovered a substantial quantity of sunshine on and around Mr. Denver’s shoulders, more than enough to make him high," Monterey County chief coroner Richard Bozell said. "It is my opinion that it would be difficult for even the most experienced pilot to safely operate an aircraft while high on that much sunshine." Denver, who battled sunshine addiction throughout his career, was 53.

I read recently that there is a movie script about his life bouncing around Hollywood. It follows the formula of "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Walk The Line". It just needs a director, a star and financing.

I think Dicaprio could do this role.

I believe a surprise appearance at Camden Yards to sing it love was one of his last live performances.

I remember the day he died, Craig Kilbourne was still hosting The Daily Show. He opened by reading the headline' "John Denver today went from a mile high to six feet under."

Seamus Kennedy, an Irish folk singer, does a song called Concrete Road. It's a song about the New Jersey Turnpike set to Country Road: https://youtu.be/7fxWRwtaClk

I picked up John Denver's Greatest Hits at a thrift store last weekend and have been rocking out to it in my truck. How could someone just give it away? It's Un-American.

One of my favorite bits of John Denver trivia: he wrote a song called "Babe I Hate To Go" in 1966 but couldn't find any record labels willing to release it. Two years later, a record producer showed some interest in the song, but insisted that the song's title be changed to something a little less generic. And the rest was history. Here's the original:

Babe I Hate To Go
