John Goodman: Greatest Supporting Actor Ever? (538 Article) (1 Viewer)

The article doesn't mention it but Flight is a good example of how Goodman pulls a movie together. It's a sad, tragic movie about a talented man's downward spiral but you know what as good as it is it lacks energy - and Goodman's role gives it that kick in the ###.

I might add Treme declined without him.

Fwiw he used to live by me, I'd see him on his motorcycle on a main thoroughfare behind me frequently - he was a big hoss of a man, filled the rear view mirror. He's slimmed down a lot but he is still tearing it up.

Claude Rains.  Four Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor, including for classics like Casablanca, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Notorious.  He was also in Lawrence of Arabia.

He nails every role. Just always spot on whether it's drama, comedy or a bit of both. I'd say he's more of a supporting actor than character actor. A guy like Peter Lorre was more of a character actor IMO.

Charles Coburn is another guy that always crushed his roles. There was just something so charming and funny about him.

Goodman is top notch. I'd also put Gene Hackman in the top tier.
Gene is interesting since he's had so many great movies where he was the lead and where was a supporting actor. He looks a supporting/character actor, but he was able to carry big lead roles like French Connection, Night Moves and The Conversation.

Morgan Freeman?

Michael K. Williams is pretty great.

My brother said The Gambler sucked but its worth the watch just for Goodman. He was also really good in that movie with Kevin Bacon where Bacon's son got murdered (forgot the name).

His filmography is not exactly loaded.
Surely you're joking, right?

Big Lebowski, Sea of Love, Flight more recently, he pops up in a lot of films. Disney and the Coen Brothers use him extensively and also he has major Disney animation roles/voices. On top of helping anchor one of the top TV comedies all time, the guy is huge in more, ways than one. I have a lot of respect for him and enjoy watching him. His work in What Planet Are You From should have gotten him an Oscar nod.

Roseanne is a classic.  All-timer.

He is normally great in his roles.  But the quality of the films on his resume leaveas him out of this discussion IMO.

The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona are classics.

You are digging if you have to reach for Sea of Love and What planet are you from.

tbh- I'm not a fan, even though he's in some of my favorites. he's just... too much.
I loved him as the KKK Bible guy in "Oh Brother Where are Thou."

He did have a supporting role in Argo, which won the Oscar for Best Picture.
