Joined my first dynasty league, any tips? (1 Viewer)

Don't be afraid to trade back.

Ideally, and it's the same thing in a redraft, you prefer to draft in the middle.   Position run when you are on the end can be a killer, especially in dynasty.

I do advise you to go young.   If you go young, and maybe have a chance to make a run mid-season, you will know who the sellers are.   And those vets will be cheaper as other owners scramble for second round picks for proven vet players that can get you over the hump.   And if you acquire picks from trading back, we'll, there ya go.   

It's really a game of high/low.    Most owners are going high, you go low.    And if your team stinks, you are still young and have good picks coming your way with a rock solid foundation going forward.....

Mike Clay has a top 240 including rookies so you can go to the seventh rookie and see what veterans are around that pick.

that was a seriously preditorial trade... all leagues I've been in have had rules to protect idiots from themselves that would do a trade like that.  Did he quit on the league yet?

Something that hasn't been mentioned:

Keep positive relationships with the other owners. Don't be the guy who, when offered a trade you see as imbalanced, replies back to the owner offering the trade with a bunch of insults. Once you get a reputation for being difficult to deal with, the other owners will just tune you out. 

Also, while it is OK to send some initial, low ball feelers in trade, avoid insulting the intelligence of the other owner by offering absurdly imbalanced trades. Again- do this often and the other owners will not want to deal with you at all.

Other owners in competitive leagues pick up on these trends quickly. Too many forays into these behaviors will make you a pariah.

I don't really agree with the idea of rules to regulate trading, barring collusion. No one has a crystal ball in this hobby.

Also, in this league, any trades of future draft picks requires paying the league fees in full through that future season. That makes it less likely that someone will bail if such trades do not work out.

The other team finished as follows:

• 2013: 7-6
  
• 2014: 3-10
  
• 2015: 2-11
  
• 2016: 4-9
  

In 2013, he was the first team out of the playoffs, so his team wasn't bad that season. But he came out of the startup draft with key players like SJax, MJD, and Tony Gonzalez, which made us think his team would age quickly.

Also, we didn't just swap picks. We made these trades:

  Gave our Year 2013 Draft Pick 6.01 (startup draft); Year 2014 Round 3 Draft Pick; Year 2015 Round 1 Draft Pick (1.11 - Coleman)
  
• Got his Year 2013 Draft Pick 5.07 (startup draft); Year 2015 Round 1 Draft Pick (1.2 - Gurley)

It's kind of bizarre how you guys kept basically just swapping each other's firsts in each deal - obviously it was a good move for you each time but just seems like an odd pattern.

The only thing odd about it is that we kept offering the same type of deal and he kept accepting.
