Bills used this guy in the preseason. Then the Eagles added him twice, the Colts had him once. The Saints just signed him off the Eagles practice squad to replace Pierre Thomas/Chris Ivory. What do you know about him? Strengths /weaknesses ? What do you know?

This is what Ive got

from wwl.com

The Saints have signed Joique Bell from the Eagle's practice squad to take his place. Thomas re-aggrevated an ankle injury last week.

This comes on the heels of the Saints putting leading running back Chris Ivory on the injured / reserve list as well. So, the team's two top rushers are now out for the postseason.

Bell has never taken a snap in a regular season NFL game, but did put up some impressive preseason numbers with the Bills. NFL.com says he carried the ball 27 times for 152 yards, an average of 5.6 yards per carry.

Bell was a security guard at Ford Field in Detroit while he was in college and asked an NFL scout how a guy from Wayne State University in Detroit could play in the NFL. That led to Bell getting a shot at the pros and landing with the Eagles.

WWL Saints Statistician Brian Duvall provided the following information on Bell:

-Undrafted rookie out of Wayne State (Michigan)- Division II school

-Bell, 24, is 5'11" 220 pounds, not very fast, but very strong and breaks tackles

-Rushed for 2,084yards last year as a senior at Wayne State and won the Harlon Hill Trophy that goes to the Division II player of year

-Totaled 6,728 rushing yards, 918 receiving yards and 100 TD's over his college career at Wayne State (4 TD's were passing)

-Worked as a part-time security guard at Ford Field while in college. He recognized one NFL scout during a kids camp at the stadium and struck up a conversation with him asking the scout if a guy from Wayne State could ever get drafted. The scout replied to him that if you have talent, they'll find you.

He's a between-the-tackles guy with good size. Not a very good route runner/receiver, and he has a reputation for putting the ball on the ground. He's got great agility for a pretty big dude, and won the Harlon Hill Award for the best DII player last year.

He's supposedly not fast enough to play in the NFL, but I saw him in a few practices. He plays faster than his 40 time, in my opinion.

Im guessing he wont be used except for depth purposes but its good to know what he brings. If he is a good between the tackles guy he may get a chance this post season in the weather.

He looked very impressive in the preseason, i was pretty disappointed we let him go, especially now that we don't have Lynch and Spiller is looking like Reggie Bush part 2.

I don't really have anything specific i can tell you though. I don't really remember much of the preseason just that i came away impressed with Bell and was disappointed that we didn't make room for him.

Sounds kinda like Chris Ivory minus the highlight-reel preseason play (Ivory had a 70+ yard TD in the preseason).

Bell had a highlight-reel play, too, just not as huge as Ivory's. He rattled off a 20-something yarder against the Redskins that showcased him a bit.

Bell is a tough runner between the tackles with good balance and nice patience. At this early stage of his career, he could be a decent situational sub for the Saints if he can pick up the offense quickly enough. We saw him at the Senior Bowl and I watched him Buffalo. I was impressed with him. It was a numbers game in Buffalo and the same can be said of Philly and Indy that probably liked his running style, but hoped he could be more of a receiver/pass protector than he probably is.

If he's in football shape, he could fill the need for 6-8 carries for 30-40 yards.

Thing that impressed me the most about him was his pass blocking for a rookie. I didn't watch him much but every time I saw him back there I remember him doing well.

If he can bring decent pass protection to the table, that's huge for Sean Payton. Bodes well for a possible future with the Saints.

saw him at the Senior Bowl practices and his instincts are NFL level. He can see a hole, anticipate a cutback lane with the best of them. Only thing I question is his burst in the open field and lack of big play ability. Short yardage, goalline runner if he gets a shot. Workman like runner who will take what is there, use legs to drive for a little more. Not the type of guy to create something out of nothing and break off a 60-yard run.

Guys like that can succeed in Payton's offenses (Mike Bell). Too bad J Bell isn't going to have time to learn much of the playbook.

Interesting that he was the Eagles' leading preseason rusher and that he was viewed as the competitor to or option to Mike Bell:

>>>While the rest of Philadelphia is distracted by the Mike Vick and Kevin Kolb drama, I've decided to direct my attention to a transaction that's been lost amongst the chaos.

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles signed running back Joique Bell from the Bills practice squad to the teams active 53-man roster.

Bell lead Buffalo's running backs with 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns during preseason.

Bell was signed as an undrafted free agent to the Buffalo Bills shortly after the 2010 Draft. Shortly after preseason finished he was demoted to the practice squad. I know what everybody is thinking. This kid was undrafted, and then failed to make the Bills starting roster. How in the world could anybody be excited about this? Two simple answers.

First, there is a reason Bell went undrafted. He attended Wayne State, a Division II program. Second, the Bills are stacked at running back. C.J. Spiller, Marshawn Lynch, and Fred Jackson is a tough trio to try to out perform. It's a bit unfortunate for the Bills, because it's possible that the Eagles may have just gotten a huge steal.

NFL Scouts have always looked down on players from Division II programs. It is a common belief that the players will not be able to hold their own at a professional level. It doesn't matter that some of the best players in the leagues history came from Division II schools. Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State), Terrell Owens (Tennessee Chattanooga), Brian Westbrook (Villanova).

However, Bell's college performance speaks for itself. In his senior season Bell received the Harlon Hill Award as the best player in Division II. He rushed for 2,084 yards and had 29 total touchdowns. During his tenure at Wayne State, Bell gained 8,055 total yards. Who holds the record? Brian Westbrook with 9,512 yards. To put it in perspective, if you eliminate the yards Westbrook had returning kickoffs, Bell would actually have surpassed him.

Now, I'm not saying that Bell is going to be better than Brian Westbrook. I'm not crazy. However, I am extremely excited to see what he brings to this team. At 5'11” and 220 lbs he has the ability to be that power running back Philadelphia fans have been wanting for years.

Mike Bell was brought in to take over that role and has not produced. It's possible Joique overtakes him at the position, and becomes Philadelphia's No. 2 running back.<<<

I was far less impressed. He looked a step and a half slow, to me. I'll be surprised if he does much in the NFL.

I'll tell you this...

I don't really know how to pronounce his first name.
I had been wondering that myself. The commentator in these highlights pronounces it like "joy" with a k at the end. Joyk. I assume it's correct.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGNMt1ZzJ3Q
They pronounce it wrong. Joik is how they say it but it is a french name. "Joi" is pronounced "wa" and the J is silent. and "que" pronounce "kee". so it is "wakee" Bell if you say it correctly. That doesnt necessarily mean he uses the correct pronunciation though. I guess we wont know until the kid says his own name. "Joik" sounds goofy to me.

Pierre Thomas, Marques Colston, Joique Bell, Remi Ayodele, Pierson Prioleau. Nawrlins is sooooo French. But where's your Jacques, Etienne and Francois? I think maybe you should add Laurent Robinson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Marcel Reece this offseason.

Bumping an old thread up, as he was released today by the Saints to make room for Will Smith. He performed quite well in the preseason, and there are many on the Saints message boards that don't expect him to make it to their PS.

he looked pretty good in the preseason. he is solid and can do a lot of things pretty well. the problem, of course, is that he's not great at any one things. i think they would like hold onto him with an eye towards next year. they might want to make changes to the RB stable going into next season.

Bell looked very good, he was picking up steam in the preseason. I wish the Saints had picked him up even a week or two earlier last year and started him vs the Seahawks in the playoffs.

{By the way I love how long-time Saints/Dome announcer Jerry Romig just avoids pronouncing his name correctly and just calls him "Jacques."}
