COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Jon Miller, who has spent parts of five decades as the voice of five major league baseball teams, has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum made the announcement on Monday. The Frick Award is presented annually for major contributions to baseball broadcasting.Miller, who also has been the voice of ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball telecasts for 20 years, also worked in San Francisco, Baltimore, Boston, Texas and Oakland. He will be honored during Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in July.
He's a guy who you really get to appreciate as an everyday radio voice outside of the Joe Morgan zone. He combines a great sense of humor with strong knowledge of the game. He's just as good during a rain delay as he is during a crucial bases loaded situation.

 I was hoping one of the two Canadian announcing icons would get in (Cheek/Van Horne).

Canadian teams that is. Both Cheek and Van Horne are American.

Jeez, you'd think you'd be satisfied with Andre Dawson's cap.I can see the case for Jacques Doucet but am not familiar with other two you mentioned.

Cheek called every Jays game from their inception until the death of his father in 2004 and then his own subsequent death of cancer in 2005. It was 4306 straight games (he's on the Jays "level of excellence" with this number in place of a jersey number). He has the two most memorable quotes in Canadian baseball history ("The Blue Jays Win It! The Blue Jays Win It!" and "Touch 'Em all Joe, You'll never hit a bigger home run").

For Toronto's rise as a franchise, starting as an expansion team, then the division titles in the mid/late eighties and the World Series titles in the early 90s, he was the voice and the constant for fans. He was a great announcer and widely respected and loved in Toronto. When he died of cancer in 2005, it was a huge loss.

Cheek has also been one of the ten finalists for the Ford Frick award in each of the past 6 years since his death, so I am a bit surprised he hasn't made it yet.

It's bad news for Cheek (and Bill King) but being deceased is a major disadvantage in the Frick Award voting. There's only been one posthumous winner in the past twenty years.

I guess the electors like having the new guy buy them a round.

Very deserving honoree, the most amazing part of Jon Miller to me is that he's been with 5 teams, how does anybody let them go?

I really used to enjoy tuning him in on the AM radio in Jersey getting the games out of Baltimore.

Very psyched for his induction :goodposting:
