Jonathan Stewart...will he be goal line in RBBC (1 Viewer)

Seems CAR is loving Deangelo Williams right now, so if its an RBBC, does Stewart handle the short yardgage and goal line duty?

My guess is this will be unpredictable at first. I expect them to get drives and whoever is on the field to stay on unless he needs a rest after a long run or because of a long grind down the field. There is a reason to give the ball to a 230+ pound beast like Stewart in short yardage, but there is no real reason not to give it to DeAngelo. He is pretty good between the tackles and has better power than most think.

I have to think it will be Stewart assuming he is healthy. I watched many Panthers games last year as I had the misfortune of having Foster as my # 2 RB. Both Foster and Williams were brutal on the goaline. Stewart was a very good goaline back at Oregon.

Stewart needs to start practicing and playing in preseason games..

a toe injury is a big deal for a RB..it could bother him all season long...

He is practicing and looking very good doing it from what i hear. I think they are just being VERY cautious with him right now for the preseason games. Why rush your starting rb into action now?

Maybe because he's a rookie, and they have no idea what kind of PRO RB he will be? Sure, you can make that comment about preseason games not being important with regards to vets like LT or Edge (neither of who play much in preseason), but with a rookie, these games are important. Also, I haven't heard he is looking "very good" in practice. There is a news blurb on the blogger from 7/30 saying he looked "flashy" on his return to practice, and then another from 8/6 that says he is still "limited."

This reminds me of the Marshawn Lynch/Anthony Thomas situation last pre-season in Buffalo. The team is doing all it can to deceive about their RBs. Come regular seaon, the rookie is unleashed.

I don't see much similarity at all.Thomas was a mediocre, essentially washed up veteran that essentially inherited the job temporarily once the team traded McGahee. It seems like the team didn't unleash Lynch until the rookie understood the offense and could protect the QB.DeAngelo seems eternally more capable and talented than Thomas, and has thus far staked his claim to initially being the starter. Whether Stewart takes over will likely depend on whether Williams can remain effective, coupled with Stewart's own ability to pick up the offense (and protect Delhomme) and, of course, be fully recovered from his toe injury.

No doubt that Williams is far better than Thomas was, but I'm referring to the "holding back" of the high first round RB in preseason. If you spend the 13th overall pick on a RB (12th in the case of Lynch) , he is starting for you immediately. All that talk of Lynch backing up Thomas, being eased in, etc. was deliberate deception, IMHO. Stewart at 13 + trading up to 19 for Otah (mortgaging next year's #1) = a very heavy dose of Stewart from week 1.

I agree that it's probably only a matter of time that Stewart is the guy, but not because of deliberate deception. He doesn't appear ready yet, and Fox has always had some loyalty to his vets.

The one thing he's got going for him is the position he plays. RB is the easiest offensive position to make the transfer from college to pro (per Marshall Faulk). I don't agree that preseason is unimportant for a RB, but it's definitely MORE important to other positions. As long as he can learn the playbook and learn NFL pass blocking, he should be ok if his toe heals by week 1.

Did the Panthers not already hold back a high draft pick for 2 years.

Yes folks. DeAngelo was the one held back and I see the same for Johnathon Stewart. Overrated

Williams was taken 27th. That is not a high draft pick (especially compared with 13). For whatever reason, the team has determined that he is nothing more than a role player. Stewart will be given every oppotrunity to be the bellcow.
