Jonathan Stewart (1 Viewer)

I'm not a Stewart owner but I'm looking to acquire him in at least one league, with rb's being ridiculously thin this year Jonathan Stewart seems like an ideal buy low candidate so I wanted to get a gauge on how Stewart owners were valuing him. I'm under no illusion that Stewart becomes a reliable every week start but he does have a decent amount of upside, he could be a solid bye week/flex play and if DWill were to go down he could be an instant high end rb2. The best part is that from the right owner he could be had for extremely cheap.

Thoughts?

definitely a hold if you own him now, or a buy low in a dynasty. Redraft his value only goes up if D-Will or Cam get hurt IMO.

I agree he can be had for cheap. I own JStew and DWill, and I'd send them both to you for an underperforming WR3. Cam Newton has regressed from last year, they just lost their pro bowl center Kalil for the season. And Cam vultures goalline looks anyway. Just not an attractive situtation to own, and if things stay this way, I can't imagine ever using either as a bye week flex with any amount of confidence. So if you want to buy cheap, now's the time.

I think he has Top 25 potential in PPR leagues if the Panthers start utilizing him more in the passing game like they did last season. They did attempt to do that in their last game but Stewart dropped a couple of passes.

I think Stewart would need injuries to both Williams and Tolbert to achieve RB1 or RB2 status on a consistent basis. Tolbert's heavily involved offensively and I think his involvement has resulted in an early season drain on Stewart's (and Williams') fantasy production. The Panthers talked about re-emphasizing the running game coming out of the bye so we'll see if they were serious next Sunday against Dallas. In my opinion, there's no excuse for Stewart and Williams not to both get double-digit touches, especially given Cam's current struggles.

With byes and injuries rising I think Stewart is someone you can plug into a RB3 spot most weeks and feel secure that he'll get you around 5-6 points in PPR. If the Panthers start using him more intelligently his floor should rise from there.

Dynasty - buy/hold

Redraft - hold/sell

I have him in a few leagues and I feel like I'm bleeding points every time I put him in my lineup. He's a liability in redraft leagues because his good games will be unpredictable, but I still believe in his talent and I think he'll eventually have a window to shine, even if it's 2 or 3 years from now. Williams is four years older and can't play forever at a high level.

He has ZERO value. I tried trading him away to RB starved teams as a bye week fill in and they have zero interest. Meanwhile this week I have a TON of bye issues and I still have zero interest in starting him even as a flex.

One other thing... even if DWil gets hurt, his value doesnt increase dramatically since they have Tolbert there. Its the same as the situation in NO. If Ingram got hurt, PTs value wouldnt go up as theyd just activate Ivory.

ugh...what a disaster of a season. That team is a mess offensively. I really don't understand what they are doing. I'm holding Stewart for upside alone but each passing week it's appearing that he may just be a wasted roster spot.

For what it's worth, Thomas' value did go up last season after Ingram got hurt because he handled more of the goal-line looks. But I agree with you about Stewart and posted the same thing. He needs injuries to both Williams and Tolbert for his value to significantly rise. The Panthers' love affair with Tolbert is baffling to me. I think he's a nice player but he's nowhere near as talented as Stewart and Williams and shouldn't be robbing them of as many snaps as he has so far.

He was dropped in my league last week so I picked him up Monday since they were on bye and waivers had not locked. Not expecting much but he at least gets touches.

with the track record of most of these threads he's going to have his best game of the year this weekend.

Just drop him. Trust me, it will be a liberating feeling to not have this guy on your team and not have to deal with the stress every week.

I haven't even debated dropping him in my 12-teamer really. I understand the potential.
I don't. But, if D Will gets hurt and if Tolber gets hurt and Cam gets a scheme change to being a drop back passer in the red zone. And if JStew somehow miraculously escapes being struck by lightning, then he's got a shot at what...RB2 upside?

With Ryan Kalil going on IR, they will have more dump offs rather than running up the gut. Picked JS off waivers last week in a PPR league as I see him being better value than DWill at this point going forward.

Sounds very liberating. I'm interested. Would you drop both JStew and Dwill on the same fantasy squad just to be done with having to pay attention to Panthers games at all?

i think losing cam will drastically hurt his value. that offense will go nowhere and yield very few opportunities with clausen.

JStew averaged 11 touches a game last year and still ranked 19th overall in 1PPR. A lot of people continue to forget that.I'm hoping CAR starts scheming to get him more involved in the passing game again but..

Tolbert has been stealing some of those checkdowns, if he gets hurt SJstew becomes a RB2 in PPR automatically.

DWills has been getting something like 11-13 touches a games. If he gets hurt, JStew becomes a RB1/RB2 regardless of format.

If Cam gets hurt, he has a shot at legit RB2 value regardless of format.

I don't treat him as a flex anymore, I treat him as an extremely high upside handcuff who I don't want falling into the oppositions hands. Yes, I understand the potential.

I'm buying into the idea the poster above mentioned regarding how the loss of the center might make them lean towards more screens. That IS one area where a slight change would make a big difference in ppr.

Without their center, I don't think they can even pretend to think that they are going to run effectively between the tackles so you would think, with a bye, that they spent some time rethinking what their best resources are.

I don't know that logic applies to the way this team runs its offense

With Roddy, D-Jax and Bush on a bye, I'm starting him as my flex this week. I'm expecting the same numbers that Ray Rice had against D-town last week. :P

In my standard scoring redraft league I cut him last week for Alex Green. Not sure there's a whole lot of upside to this situation unless DeAngelo gets hurt. And if I'm going to roster someone whose value is largely dependent on an injury, there are better situations to gun for.

It's time to start talking about redraft value guys.

The Associated Press confirms coach Ron Rivera planned to use Jonathan Stewart as the "clear featured back" in Week 7 versus the Cowboys.

Beat writer Steve Reed notes that Rivera "tried to change things up schematically" to give Stewart a shot "as the workhorse running back." Rivera indicated that other such personnel and scheme changes could be coming this week, though he did not expand on his backfield plans. Stewart played 58 snaps in Week 7 compared to 15 for Mike Tolbert and just five for a benched DeAngelo Williams. If Rivera does want to establish Stewart, it makes sense to give him more than a one-week audition. Stewart is talented enough to turn the Panthers' struggling ground attack around. He should be owned in all fantasy leagues going forward.
I can't exactly explain how excited this news actually makes me. Sure Tolbert vultured a TD but Stewart saw 89% of the teams snaps compared to Dwill's 8%. That is the snap percentage of a workhorse type back.

Let's look ahead (defense ranking in 1PPR)..

WAS(21rst), CHI(30th), DEN(15th), TB(22nd), PHI(25th), KC(8th), ATL(13th), SD(14th), OAK(7th)

Let's be honest, the schedule is pretty horrible. It does however open up around playoff time. I'm also aware Cam and Tolbert will effect volume, that CAR is a mess and just lost their center but JStew's talent could supersede all of these factors if given the opportunity. I believe if JStews touches catch up with his possible future snap percentage he'll hold legit RB2 value regardless of match up.

Apparently it doesn't take much to excite you ... 10 touches for 35 yds is the good news ... the bad news is Rivera indicated that other such personnel and scheme changes could be coming this week.Does that mean it's Deangelos turn? or Tolberts?

In .5 PPR for RBs he's got a 4 point average going for him. Cam missed him on any easy TD last week, and the increased snap count is promising I guess. Might hold him for one more week...

My guess is that they may start to run a more conventional offense and perhaps strip back some of the shotgun option nonsense that clearly isn't working. I think the staff clearly prefers Stewart to Williams...when Stewart was out the staff seemed to say on both occassions that when Stewart is out it hamstrings the offense and they are happy to get him back in there and quotes like that. Now when he got back in there they didn't force feed him but perhaps the defense reacts/plays them differently (respects Stewart more) which opens up more holes...not really sure. Then when they say we're looking to have more of a feature back and they give the vast majority of the snaps to Stewart it's not really a surprise that he's the one they would choose.I'm sure the owner had a conversation with Rivera before/after the firing of the GM and so long as he's not brain dead he realizes he's on the block as well and interviewing for a future job. I wouldn't be surprised if there were wholesale changes to listen to what his owner and star QB are complaining about.

:goodposting: Nailed it.Oh, and Deangelo looks terrible these days.

Missed it. The Rb's aren't the problem here. Rivera is a buffoon. He said he was featuring him and he still got 10 carries, in a tight game vs a great pass d/OK run d in Dallas. Funny how his "feature" constitutes a RBBC in most other circles.I'd take I'm off the WW. Buy low, but thankfully I divested myself of the whole backfield last week.

thanks for the responses banger, shady

I owned MJD and Jennings and dumped Jennings a couple of weeks ago  for Alex Green. Seemed like an upside move at the time. Not mad about landing Green but I had so many WR's I could have should have dropped.

J Stew trade value in redraft? Anyone? I'm ready to sell low now.
I sent an email yesterday to the J-Stew owner asking what the price was and he offered him up for Randall Cobb just now. It's a 12 team 0.5 PPR redraft league just to give you an idea of where his value is today. I'd say he's still a top 25 RB with upside with D-Will's reduced roll last game and Rivera's comments today. I definitely would not sell him right now unless you're getting top 20 RB value and need help elsewhere because of the upside.
