Jonny Gomes? (1 Viewer)

He should be a solid pickup right? He's been on a tear since being recalled. What's his playing time going to look like?

Dukes is very clearly not in the team's plans at all anymore and will probably be gone shortly -- so once BJ or Rocco get back (BJ first, Rocco is dead again), then Beej will move out to center, Delmon back to right and Gomes will very likely be the full-time DH.

If Rocco ever gets back and is capable of playing center (somewhat unlikely), that would push BJ back to second and leave Gomes at DH. BUT, if Rocco can't play the field, that could impede Gomes' playing time as Rocco would need to DH.

Dukes is basically only on the roster now as the emergency centerfielder, since Delmon is out there.

That's how I understand it also. If Rocco and BJ both back, at least the way things look now, Wigginton will be the odd man out (currently playing 2nd), not Gomes.

Gotcha. They're supposedly trying to trade Wiggy too. I took a peak at his numbers and he's been doing pretty well this year.

Chris Dickerson was placed on the DL today, leaving the Reds with only 3 healthy true outfielders.

That means Jonny Gomes should get more consistent playing time now. Although he can be a big liability in the average/OBP department, Gomes should offer a solid source of power if you are looking to pick up some cheap HRs. He has homered in 3 of his last 5 starts. Gomes' history of high fly-ball percentage and the short porch at the Red's Great American Ballpark should be a nice combination for HRs. Historically, he has hit HRs at a pace of about 1 HR per 18 at-bats and this year he is hitting them at a pace of 1 HR per 14.5 at-bats. His current batting average of .284 is somewhat inflated by a high BABIP and he historically hits worse against right handed pitchers, but I expect that he should offer some solid power numbers at least while Bruce and Dickerson are sidelined.

If you are looking for some help in the power department, I think Gomes is a nice a short-term plug-in in deeper mixed leagues or NL-only leagues.

Jonny Gomes is making my prediction look good today.

Gomes thru 9 today:

2 for 3, 2 HRs, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 BB.

It should be noted that both HRs were hit against right-handed pitchers, which Gomes has historically hit worse against.

Even when Dickerson comes off the DL, Gomes should see more time in left. Even though it's been a platoon situation, Gomes is outhitting Nix even against righties.

Oh wait, I forgot Dusty was the manager. Never mind.

Ha. Yeah, I was originally going to project that Gomes had an opportunity to take over the full-time job, but then remembered that Dusty Baker doesn't make lineup decisions based on talent or hitting prowess. Hopefully, Baker will realize that he should start one of his best hitters on a regular basis while Gomes is forced into the lineup due to these injuries.
