Decided to throw my mock into the ring since that's what we do at this time of year. More fun to talk about a mock than the real NFL news of "Team XYZ screwed up drafting Player X and shopping him in trade for draft picks." Will eventually expand out to the full 2 rounds but need to go to bed for now.
1. Houston Texans: Johnny Manziel, QB. No trade partners materialize, so the Texans are forced into a pick they don't really want to make just like KC last year. In the end, the hometown boy from A&M is too much of a lure for the Texans to pass up when they see little differentiation between the top 3 QB's. Certainly some of their fanbase will be horrified, but many more will be delighted and both attendance and merchandise sales will skyrocket. Johnny Football will make a couple "holy crap, did you just see that?" plays in the pre-season against some other team's future roster cuts and seem to validate the choice. But you know this story won't end well.
2. St Louis Rams TRADE to Tampa Bay for the 1.7, 2.39, and 2015 1st. Jadevon Clowney. The Rams find another sucker (um, trade partner) for their high first round pick. This time the bounty is less since it's for a pass rusher rather than a passer, but still make out well in the deal. Tampa beats the trade competition and gets their "player of the generation," unaware the only other serious bidders were the Vikings.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Blake Bortles, QB. Jacksonville picks their "franchise quarterback," the big man who they hope will be the second coming of Ben Roethlisberger. He isn't.
4. Cleveland Browns: Sammy Watkins, WR. The Browns don't find themselves bowled over by any of the consensus top 3 QBs and so pass on a QB at the 1.4 in favor of the top wideout in the draft. It's a luxury they feel they can afford with Brian Hoyer already aboard, and some other QB options they feel will likely be there at 1.26 or round 2.
5. Oakland Raiders: Greg Robinson, OT. Raiders really wanted Bortles, but getting the big guy as a consolation prize isn't bad. Especially since even with all their salary cap space, the team wasn't able to come to terms with current OT Veldheer and franchise tag him. Robinson gives the team flexibility and an insurance policy in case Veldheer is gone next year.
6. Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, OT. Falcons liked the idea of Clowney more than the reality of paying up to get him, thus settle for OL help instead. It's the less sexy pick, but ultimately the correct one as Matthews anchors the ATL line for a dozen years.
7. St Louis Rams: (trade down from TB). Teddy Bridgewater, QB. The Rams watch in horror as the draft unfolds in front of them and both elite OTs and Watkins are picked off. In just short of an abject panic they seek a trade-down. In a moment of insight, the Rams GM recalls a very relevant trade feelers from the year prior from a team who just happens to have a ton of cap space available. In a few minutes, the deal is done. The Rams offload Sam Bradford (and more importantly, his huge paycheck) to the Browns for their 2.35. Boom, multiple problems solved for both teams. Both QBs wind up having good but not stellar careers of around borderline QB1 production, about 3-4 playoff appearances each and identical .500 playoff records with no Super Bowls.
8. Minnesota Vikings: Derek Carr, QB. Never ones afraid to reach for a QB, the Vikings do so again and hope it's not Ponder or Weeden redux. Carr actually pleasantly surprises and has a decent career in spite of himself and the doubters.
9. Buffalo Bills: Khalil Mack, OLB. Bills delighted to get their choice between Mack or Barr. In the end they decide the "small school" concerns with Mack are less than the "only played the position for 2 years" concerns with Barr and choose accordingly.
10. Detroit Lions: Eric Ebron. For years, everyone has mocked a WR or CB to the Lions and been wrong, and again the Lions refuse to cooperate by instead grabbing the best TE to replace Pettigrew.
11. Tennessee Titans: Taylor Lewan, OT. The 2013 run on O-Linemen continues. While some would argue that the Titans' biggest needs are a pass rusher and Safety, incumbent Titans OT Dave Stewart is likely gone and the Titans aren't sold on Barr and the OT gets precedence over the positionally devalued safety spot. Lewan's monster combine showing seals the deal.
12. New York Giants: Mike Evans, WR. The Giants are momentarily the saddest panda in the room after seeing the Titans snag Lewan one spot ahead of them. They then realize Evans is there for the taking to replace the completely underwhelming Hakeem Nicks and start feeling a bit better after reminding themselves that they did just draft Pugh in the 1st round last year.
13. St Louis Rams: Hasean Clinton-Dix, FS. Like the Giants, were hoping for Lewan. But after the Rams unexplicably passed on drafting a Safety relatively early last year even after cutting Quintin Mikell, The Rams realize they can't compete in the NFCW with the nobodies they have playing the position now. HaHa fills their needs better than Pryor since the Rams need a center fielder rather than a scrimmage line punisher.
14. Chicago Bears: Aaron Donald, DT. The Bears need help all over the defense, from DT to DE and Safety. Therefore they could almost close their eyes, throw a dart, and fill a huge hole in their roster. Donald falling this far after his monster combine makes it a slightly easier choice, but it could have easily been a half-dozen other guys as well.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Justin Gilbert, CB. Every year it seems the Steelers have somebody amazing fall to them. This time it's the top CB in the class, who they need to fill Ike Taylor's old spot.
16. Dallas Cowboys: Kony Ealy, DE. Another team which tends to confound those who create mock drafts. In a defense full of holes from salary cap casualties, the Cowboys pick the big boy from Missouri over other options like Dennard or Pryor.
17. Baltimore Ravens: Zach Martin, OT/OG. The Ravens lose both Oher and Monroe to free agency, completely blowing up an offensive line which wasn't that great in 2013 in any event. A wide receiver will have to wait for now.
18. New York Jets: Marquise Lee, WR. The Jets happily scoop up a weapon after the Ravens are forced to patch a leaky line. And like Gordon in Cleveland, Lee proves a good WR can thrive even with a mediocre QB.
19. Miami Dolphins: David Yankey, OG. The Fish picking OL was one of the most foregone conclusions of the draft after the Incognito fiasco of last year. No OTs worth picking at this point so Yankey gets the nod.
20. Arizona Cardinals: C.J. Mosley, ILB. The Cardinals sit helpless as one O Lineman after another goes off the boards, leaving only table scraps by their 1.20 pick. The Cards think long and hard about Xavier Su-a-Filo, but can't resist Mosley.
21. Green Bay Packers: Calvin Pryor, FS. The Pack could have used Mosley, but Safety is just as big a need and some folks think he's better than Clinton-Dix.
22. Philadelphia Eagles: Anthony Barr, OLB/DE. In every draft class there is the defensive player widely considered a top 5/10 pick who slides on draft day. Last year it was Manti Teo, the year before Melvin Ingram. Usually he winds up being drafted by the Chargers and being unremarkable, but this year the Eagles snatch him and he actually does pretty well.
23. Kansas City Chiefs: Louis Nix, DT. The Chiefs are somewhat surprised to see a guy who was one of the top guys on their board still there at #23. Thoughts about picking a WR quickly fall by the wayside when they start imagining the luxury of moving Dontari Poe to DE.
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Darqueze Denard, CB. Another team like the Steelers who repeatedly have great players fall to them, in this case the guy who takes turns with Gilbert being considered top CB in the class.
25. San Diego: Dee Ford, DE. Pass rush or OL? The Chargers OL was better than expected last year, and they tempt fates by passing on a lineman here but Ford is an intriguing prospect for the Chargers.
26. Cleveland Browns: Xavier Su-a-Filo. Sweating bullets while SD was on the clock, the Browns luck out here and get their top OG target. Cleveland Browns suddenly aren't a punchline anymore and have a true shot of replicating the Seahawks rise to the top.
27. New Orleans Saints: Bradley Roby, CB. After considering OLB Ryan Shazier, the Saints decide to lock down the CB position which is pretty bare after Keenan Lewis.
28. Carolina Panthers: Brandon Cooks, WR. The Panthers suprisingly bypass Odell Beckham but wind up very happy with their choice anyway.
29. New England: Tim Jernigan, DT. Pats bypass a very tempting Odell Beckham in order to reload their DL for the 2014 season.
30. San Francisco 49ers: Odell Beckham, WR. Niners gladly scoop Beckham after Pats pass one spot before.
31. Denver Broncos: Rashede Hageman, DT. A surprising amount of talent left here for the Broncos, ultimately BPA wins out over a desire to upgrade the OL in wake of their Super Bowl shellacking.
32. Seattle Seahawks: Jace Amaro, TE. With the release of Sidney Rice the defending champs could have also gone WR, but there's a reason Amaro is mocked so often in this very spot.
Round 2:
33. Houston Texans: Morgan Moses, OT. Yet another tackle comes off the board.
34. Washington Redskins: Deone Bucannon, S. The Skins secondary is a dumpster fire and filling the holes will likely require heavy investment near the top of the draft.
35. St Louis Rams (from Cleveland): Cyrus Kouandjio, OT. With Jake Long still doubtful and Safford a possible goner, the Rams need OL certainty. Kouaandjio had a bad combine and so let's the Rams get a decent OT on the cheap.
36. Oakland Raiders: Jimmy Garropolo, QB. After taking man beast Greg Robinson in the 1st, the Raiders try out Garropolo for size at QB.
37. Atlanta Falcons: Ryan Shazier, OLB. After OT in the first, ATL gets someone who can both pass rush and cover a TE.
38. St Louis Rams: Kelvin Benjamin, WR. The Rams finally get their big man receiver in the 6-5 Benjamin hoping to find a Megatron/Alshon Jeffrey clone, and promptly discover (1) he isn't, (2) Stedman Bailey is the real deal and is the leading Rams receiver in 2014.
39. Jacksonville Jaguars: Stephon Tuitt, DE. Jaguars try to jump start a pass rush.
40. Minnesota Vikings: Scott Crichton, DE. First rounder was QB pick for the offense, second rounder goes to the defense.
41. Buffalo Bills: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE. Bills considered taking a RT here, but decide on a new weapon instead.
42. Tennessee Titans: Carlos Hyde, RB. CJ?K will try free agency along with MJD and find a very tepid market. In this case, he stays in TEN and enjoys a very productive timeshare with him and Hyde both producing good numbers.
43. NY Giants: Antonio Richardson, OT. Offensive line passed in the 1st, can't recur in the 2nd.
44. St Louis Rams: Jason Verrett, CB. Cortland Finnegan can start packing his bags and hoping someone else picks him up.
45. Detroit Lions: Allen Robinson, WR. Voila, Lions WR2 acquired and he and Calvin wreak havoc together.
46. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jack Mewhort, OT. Rebuilding of the Steelers line commences with this pick.
47. Dallas Cowboys: Kyle Fuller, CB. Passed on a Safety in the first, but will pick up a solid CB here.
48. Baltimore Ravens: Jordan Matthews, WR. Ravens offense was putrid last year. OL in the 1st and a WR here is a good start in fixing what's wrong.
49. NY Jets: Gabe Jackson, OG. The Jets uncharacteristically make 2 solid draft choices in a row.
50. Miami Dolphins: Billy Turner, OT. Teams are starting to reach for O Line talent at this point.
51. Chicago Bears: Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S. More defensive help on the way for the Bears.
52. Arizona Cardinals: Joel Bitonio, OT. Cards hope for the best with linemen becoming increasingly thin. Value is questionable here but Cards need someone to play tackle.
53. Green Bay Packers: Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB. Packers need an ILB more than an OLB, but gladly take the sliding Attaochu here.
54. Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Ward, S. Generally considered a low-positional demand role, Safeties are hot commodities this year.
55. Cincinnati Bengals: Kyle Van Noy, OLB. Another guy who should have gone earlier and Bengals quickly snap him up.
56. San Francisco 49ers (from KC, Alex Smith 2012 trade): Bashaud Breeland, CB. The NFC West arms race continues with this pick.
57. San Diego Chargers: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB. Chargers take a calculated risk on the big and tall CB here.
58. New Orleans Saints: Marcus Roberson, CB. The run on CBs continue, and Saints try to grab one before nothing is left but crumbs.
59. Indianapolis Colts: Davante Adams, WR. DHB was a bust, Reggie Wayne may not return, and Colts need someone besides T.Y. to throw at.
60. Carolina Panthers: Louchiez Purifoy, CB. Panthers join the CB party.
61. San Francisco 49ers TRADE to Clevland Browns for 2014 3rd and 2015 3rd rounder. Tre Mason, RB. Browns pay very little to move up and grab their top-ranked RB since Willis McGahee and Ogbonnaya aren't scaring anyone.
62. New England Patriots: Troy Niklas, TE. Aaron Hernandez is in jail and Gronk is broken more often than not.
63, Denver Broncos: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB. Broncos already have #1 offense, so sticking with upgrades on the D makes sense.
64. Seattle Seahawks: WIll Sutton, DT. Seahawks take a guy who they hope can return to his 2011 form, hoping 2012 was the aberration.
