I spent the last week in Okinawa and Tokyo and, while there was a large culture shock, I came away very impressed with their culture; specifically, the way people handle themselves in public.  They're quiet, polite, clean, and organized.  There was no hearing people's phone or Facetime conversations.  There was no garbage or graffiti on the subway.  There was no attitude from any customer service rep.  It was peaceful and efficient.  Why don't we have that here in the states?

Respect is a dying.  Everyone is looking for the next zing, media doesn't help.  The headlines of some of their "articles" are terrible.  I think it comes a lot from the way social media works, people feel empowered to do and say the extreme because they don't have to look the person in the face.  As that becomes more and more the norm it starts to leak into the everyday personal reactions as well.

That sounds so nice.

They also take naps wherever and whenever the #### they want. On trains, in a coffee shop, on a bench, etc. It is awesome

I forgot to add they're not a bunch of fat slobs either.
Got back from Montreal not long ago. Nearly everyone well dressed and in good shape. Walk around here and half the population looks like they just got out of bed. Doesnt surprise me the path America is taking. Good portion of society has no self respect let alone respect for others.

You sure you visited Oki?  Lived there for almost five years (returned stateside 2 years ago) and there was garbage/ graffitti galore.  Not so much in mainland.  I ❤️ Tokyo!!

must just be in japan.   Those Asian tourists that take over Yellowstone are the rudest people I've ever ran across in my life.

Why do you hate America?

(2 hours and nobody said it...)

Japan is a relatively small nation with not a whole lot of useable land but a ton of people.

Their social norms and constructs were developed centuries ago.

It is also one of the most homogenous societies on earth.

Did you spot any drunk folks?  You know, the one’s society is told to ignore and act like they don’t exist?

I saw a million asianed tourists in Grand Canyon and Zion NP a couple weeks back and they all fit the earlier stereotypes (polite, well dressed, fit). The strangest thing I noticed though is their extreme aversion to the sun. It was 1000 degrees outside and they were covered in jackets, gloves, hats, umbrellas, facemasks, etc. The craziest things were these giant see-through hats with visors that looked like welders masks. They would flip them up when the sun was above them and then pull them down if they were walking into the sun. It was like they couldnt have an inch of skin exposed to the sun for even a second.

Yep went to Montreal last year and I was taken aback by how beautiful everyone was there. My brother said they were all genetically enhanced or mutants lol.

We're a nation that respects and adores the outlaw.  We all want to be the outlaw; the person who gets to bend the rules to get what we want while making sure everyone else adheres to the letter of the law.

:goodposting:  I was in Japan for a few weeks in the late 90s and had similar impressions as the OP.  But when you read up on it, especially in Tokyo, you just have an incredible population density, on an island where only 1/7th of the land is usable for living on, and where there is almost no diversity.  I remember one of their sayings about how to act loosely translated to "the nail that stands up gets pounded down."

When you were poor and worked in Japan you worked in the field and you became darker.  Dark skin is associated with lower class. When we lived in Okinawa a lot of the Japanese women would walk along the beach iin what looked like a beekeeper uniform to keep the sun off of them.   When driving, the ladies would wear arm protectors to keep the sun from coming in through the window and darkening their skin.

I don't know if it still holds as true..(or if it ever were) but ESL students from China once told me that to be tan or "sunned" meant you were a lower class worker.

Interesting... thanks!

ETA - I assumed it was for health reasons, but am somehow pleased to hear its because they're vain. Nice to hear they're not perfect!

I went to Montreal in 2009 and had my truck stolen. Officer told me not to expect to see it again since they put the stolen cars in containers and ship them elsewhere.

I remember thinking .... well at least you know what they do with them. Would it be too much trouble for you and some of your fellow officers to go down to the docks and retrieve my truck? ... and some of the other stolen cars

I later learned that Montreal is the stolen car capitol of the world ... and out of country vehicles are targeted since auto insurance for Canadian residence requires automotive tracking device be installed if you want theft insurance.

I vote for Tokyo.

Prolly a good looking, well dressed guy who stole it though.

You should shut your whore mouth.

Pretty sure every generation has said this about the next.

This is still the case in a lot of cultures, India for example. Latin America as well. It was in the US as well until about 100 years ago.
Yeah now it's quite the opposite.  A nice tan implies you're lucky enough to take plenty of vacations.  Or just spend oodles on tanning bed sessions.   :oldunsure:

Guess it's no surprise i'm pasty white.  At least for a SoCal native.   :(

Kids!
I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:
Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can't they be like we were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?
Kids!
I've tried to raise him the best I could
Kids! Kids!
Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we're on the subject!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an' roll!
Why can't they dance like we did
What's wrong with Sammy Caine?
What's the matter with kids today!

I had a meeting yesterday with Japanese business men and they were the most polite people I've ever been around.  It was so jarring after dealing with Americans for so long that I immediately texted my wife to tell her how polite and well mannered they were.
