Kansas City Defense (1 Viewer)

week 1 - gave up 23 to the Bengals

week 2 - gave up 9 to the broncos

week 3 - BYE

week 4 - Shutout the 49ers.

Will they continue to play good D or is today an anomoly ? Thoughts?

They are not the same pansies as last year. Four new starters that have all played well. Huge upgrades at CB. Young safeties that have rotated in and made big plays. A lot of depth at LB. The D-line is solid in the middle, and the DE's have both been getting pressure on the QB's.

They are a solid defense, and yeah...they'll continue to play well.

Very stout. There's a weak link or two, but it doesn't show in the numbers.

Even the things I'm mildly concerned with have very good "excuses". For example, they're giving up a few too many yards on the ground for my liking. But I do smile at three things:

(1.) 3.9 ypc - teams aren't getting it at 4.5 per clip. The Chiefs had a top-10 overall rush defense last season but it was a fraud. This defense is actually for real.

(2.) Circumstance - the Broncos run on everyone, and the Bengals were running out a lead in a game where the Chiefs' offense performed just about as bad as you'll see from any NFL team all season.

(3.) Opposition - Rudi Johnson, Frank Gore and the Denver Broncos... you find me a dozen teams that perform better against those three and I'll be surprised. Johnson's among the best backs in football, has been for a couple of years and will be for years to come; Frank Gore has been one of the more hyped players in the fantasy world over the last few weeks; and the Denver Broncos are going to run the football every single year.

Law and Surtain have both been commonly labelled overrated but both have given up very little. Hali was labelled a reach and he's been nothing short of Jared Allen #2, who is a borderline Pro Bowler in his own right. The linebacking core is fast and boy can they put a hat on people.

I don't like either of the Chiefs starting safeties, but when on their game they're solid and make plays (Wesley with a sack yesterday, Knight with a pick; and neither was a gimme). Their defensive tackles are also merely average, but that's been enough.

I have been preaching, however, that the defense is a stud DT short of an elite defense.

Not at all excusing the negatives of either performance, but bare in mind:Week 1 - lets take a look at some of the Bengals' starting field positions:01:00 1:07 KC 14 4 -5 Field Goal03:07 2:02 KC 37 5 37 Touchdown09:59 1:32 KC 45 3 0 Punt08:30 2:09 KC 44 3 -11 Punt03:52 0:27 KC 47 3 2 Punt02:49 1:40 KC 19 4 1 Field GoalSIX freaking drives started in the Chiefs' half. TWO freaking drives started inside the Chiefs' 20. 16 of 23 total points allowed as a result. 3 punts, only one drive with more than TWO yards. Two yards! The Bengals were gifted field position over and over and over again. The Chiefs continued to make stops; -5 yards, 0, -11, 2, 1... against an elite offensive football team, that's pretty doggone good defense. One bad drive (if you can call it that given the starting position) that netted a clean 7 points, but the other 6 were absolute gifts. The Bengals got the ball and gained a yard, result: field goal. The Bengals got the ball and had another drive go MINUS 5 yards, result: field goal.Week 2 - the offense was a joke and it required overtime for the Broncos to get a third of their points.

I'd like to think so, and objectively, you'd have to think so, but anything can happen...

In the past, despite whatever performance I saw at home, I'd say no because Vermeil-coached Chiefs teams could not translate such performances to the road. But Herm has installed a certain level of discipline that, at least so far, has proven to get the players ready to play on the road.

One thing with the Chiefs defense is that it's not yet able to consistently get pressure on the quarterback with four rushers. They did a good job yesterday, and the Cardinals O-line is probably as bad/worse than the Niners in pass protection, but I'm still more of a pessimist than an optimist in that area.

Committing linebackers and safeties to the blitz concerns me facing a team with the kind of wide receiver duo Arizona has, whether or not Leinart could hit the back side of a barn from 20 yards away.

I saw someone mention in another thread how Leinart will "be in for a rough day". I'd like to think that his numbers will be poor and that the personal and team success will reflect that, but I don't think he has anything to worry about in terms of getting hit *too* much. The Chiefs are really hitting people in the open field and punishing a lot of running backs, but need to generate more of a pass-rush.

Tamba "reach" Hali and Jared Allen look to be a pair of very, very solid bookends but the tackles are solid yet underwhelming.

I was at the game yesterday and the LBs were all over the place making big plays because the DL kept pushing Smith out of the pocket. They never gave him time to throw and Gore had no where to run. Very impressive defensive display!

I saw a good portion of the game and never saw SF try to go deep to Bryant which could have helped keep KC honest. maybe they did but I didn't see it.

KC play calling is getting smart by breaking out of their stereotype and passing the ball in situations that everyone would assume a Herm team would run (goal line, 1/10, 2/5 and red zone). This was a good game for KC because they kept passing even when they were up a ton in the 2nd half and the "smart" play is to run time off the clock via the run. I think KC has realized that to run you have to establish your willingness to pass first as well as your effectiveness in the passing game.

KC passing game moved the chains, gave them the early lead, freed up running room for LJ and allowed the DEF to relax and tee off on SF.

Next week @ AZ and Leinert I'd expect to see more of the same pass first and score first and will allow KC to put more pressure on the QB and rattle Leinert. This would be a good week to own the KC DEF as it could be another blood bath.
