Kansas City Offense (1 Viewer)

I'm likin LJ a lot this year. His biggest problem is between the ears. He's a tremendous talent but let self caused nonsense get in the way.

He seems to be doing and saying all the right things. Last year he still had that burst and broke a lot of big plays but his attitude got him sent to the bench.

I'm really surprised there isn't more talk about him.

I took him as my RB3 behind P. Thomas and K. Smith today. I was not really targeting him at all but there he was. I hope he surprises.

Yep...he turns 30 in Nov., and I could see 1-2 more years of 320-350 carries and 1300-1400 yards now that he was an upgraded QB, better WRs (albeit not great) and some better pieces on the OL.

Any news on KC's TC yet? Specifically, is Cassel looking the part?
All based on just one week's action, so purely a limited take at this point --Good:

- Branden Albert looks like a beast

- Larry Johnson is playing for his job and it's showing

- Cassel has been deadly accurate and displays impressive leadership skills

Bad:

- No one has stepped up even remotely at TE

- Damion McIntosh is getting beaten like a drum at RT, and there's little positive word on any other tackle looking good

- The WRs are dropping a lot of passes

Based on what I've read I think Cassel is looking like the part for sure. It's just a shame that the majority of the supporting cast hasn't stepped up thus far. Still plenty of time to go, and the dropsies are something that can improve.
Following on from this, here's a completely unbiased third-party take:Jay Glazer: Cassel appears to be the real deal

This in addition to Peter King and John Clayton giving pretty positive reports about him, too.

Word out of camp overall is that KC's WRs can't catch a hold, and the right side of the OL is shaky, but Cassel and LJ are looking great in the backfield. For fantasy purposes I like Cassel less due to the supporting cast, but LJ is severely underrated this year IMO.

Anyone else thinking this offense has a lot of trainwreck potential?
Not just you. With that O-line...I absolutely expect Cassel to lead the league in sacks taken this year. I really do not expect this to be a good offensive team this year but it would appear that you and I are in the minority.

I'm with you.
Just curious...why do you guys think that? The way I see it is that they've improved at QB, they potentially have a real head coach and good OC in place of ridiculous Edwards, LJ is looking good and saying the right things, the line should improve and their defense should be horrible so they'll be able to put up meaningless 4th qtr stats every game. They did lose Gonzo so that will hurt but other than that nearly everything has been positive and should improve from last year. I'm not thinking they are going to be a top half of the league offense but there's a few guys on the offense that will be productive fantasy starters.

I think their defense is the problem. If they fall behind and have to start thorwing all the time, then that's a problem. It takes Larry Johnson out of the game plan, and puts the burdern sqaurely on Cassel and Bowe to keep them afloat. I liked Mark Bradley as a good third option (behind Gonzalez and Bowe), but I'm not sure he can be the No. 2 guy all season long. It sounds like TE is a problem, so there's not a lot of help there. If teams can focus on containing Bowe and getting after Cassel, then that's not good news.Fantasy-wise, Cassel might put up some decent numbers having to throw all the time. Carson Palmer did so for several years, but I'd rate the WRs he had at that time over what KC has right now. The Rams have been terrible on defense for years, but Marc Bulger hasn't benefitted from that like you think he would.

Bulger had some nice seasons until the offensive line became an absolute joke. He finished top 10 3 times, Holt was a perenial top 10 player and SJax if he could have stayed on the field would have been top 10. My point is that there won't be a ton to spread around to a TE and 2-3 starting wr's but I feel that there will be enough for a couple good fantasy starters. They aren't going to be Lions bad and even the Lions had Calvin and K. Smith which were decent/good players and I think KC will be similar.

I am saying this a a KC homer and a "food for thought" in regards to the defense....

What if Gunther & Herm just mis-handled that unit. Let me list some of the picks on that D

1st rounders

Derrick Johnson

Tamba Hali

Glenn Dorsey

and now Tyson Jackson

2nd rounders

Turk McBride

Brandon Flowers

Bernard Pollard

3rd Rounders

Tank Tyler

Then you add in FAs Zach Thomas, Mike Vrabel and Mike Brown.

Can a team really miss on EIGHT first-day picks?

Right after the season even Jason Whitlock pointed out that Dorsey was being used incorrectly, playing head-up over the guard, when he is a gap-penetration DT.

I think KC's defense will be the surprise of the league.

Oh and as for the OL, Brandon Albert was excellent for a rookie, and they did add a good, albeit not great, OG Mike Goff. Waters and Goff is a nice tandem. KC is really one RT away form a decent OL. And I think Cottam may be a better blocker than Tony ever was.

Any guesses on what the WR depth chart will look like come opening day for the Chiefs? Anything positive coming from Bradley, Engram and Toomer this preseason that suggests they'll be capable of rounding out a serviceable group of pass-catchers?

-I think Cassel is a system QB that holds onto the ball too long. Bellichick put him in the shotgun which helped him see the field better and minimize his sacks, he had success. Haley is putting him in a pro style set, which does not cater to Cassel's strengths. Camp reports are not helping Cassel's case.-The o line is still bad, this will only make Cassel's issues with holding onto the ball too long even more apparent-The best WR is in the coach's doghouse and the rest of the corps is either bad, unproven, or over the hill-They traded their pro bowl TE, not necessarily a bad thing as this team isn't built to compete in the short term, but their backups are either bad or unproven-LJ is old and I don't think Charles is any more than a change of pace back, add in the o line and I don't see much optimism-The defense is still lousy. I like what they're doing on the line and think they could be a solid unit in 2010 but not this season. The 3-4 is very reliant on LB's and KC's LB's simply aren't that good, especially rushing the passer. The secondary's not bad, but they're nothing great either. If KC had brought in Cassel and used the same system on offense as last season I think they may be in line for some success this season, but I think the transition will go badly.
