Keeper leagues (1 Viewer)

Our 12 team re-draft league is looking to turn it into some type of a keeper league. None of us have ever played in a keeper league before. Can you give us a few pointers such as:

1) How many players to keep

2) Length of time players can be kept ( some guys mentioned you can only keep a player for 2 yrs ) Not a fan of that

Any other pointers would be appreciated.

we've had our league for a decade and a half...keep 4 + a rookie (for a dynasty aspect) and can keep the players as long as you want. works pretty well for us. the rookie aspect is cool because it spurs more trading in the offseason and regular and adds more value to good rookie players.

I'd recommend adding some kind of "cost" for the keepers. I have seen many leagues where the the owner sacrifices a draft pick commensurate to when the kept player was drafted before. For example, if you drafted a player in the 9th in year 1, he could be kept for a 7th in year 2 and so on. Places a big premium on taking risks in the later rounds of a draft as they can pay off tremendously. In auction formats, you can increase the contract each year by some set amount (percentage or absolute).

I'd also recommend adding a couple spots to your bench if you are going to have a large set of keepers. To make keepers work, you need to have the roster space to sit on players who may not do anything for some time.

Our keeper league is going strong, now year three. Keep three max, a player can be kept twice before going back to the draft, costs one round higher than previous year to keep, latest keeper round is round 7.

I like our rules because it combines the dynasty and redraft worlds. The draft is still great fun, but you can keep the skeleton of your team together. And the rule about only keeping twice lets other owners get a shot at owning the players they want.

our keeper league is in its 10th year. we keep three at the round they were drafted. they move up to a top 3 pick the next year depending on how many points they score.

keeping only 3 has kept our drafts very fun while also having the enjoyment of keeping your better/favorite players.

We do it very simple... must keep 3. No more, no less. Draft day starts with 36 players off the board. No costs, no picks to give up, just pick 3 guys and you're stuck with them. Everyone gets it, no one complains, if you snag Arian Foster or Hillis on draft day, great, keep 'em as long as you want. There are enough rookies and turnover every year to keep it interesting.

Yep, especially at RB. I like your idea. Keep 3, no cost. How long can you keep these 3 ?

after reading this and thinking more about it, how about this:

1) Keep up to 3 players as long as you want

2) If you keep one player, you forfeit rd 1.

3) If you keep two players, you forfeit rounds 1 and 2

4) If you keep three players, you forfeit rds 1-3

5) Last place drafts 1st. First place drafts last

6) No tanking

As long as you want. No limit on time. You get Peyton Manning as a rookie, he's yours as long as you want him. Two weeks before the draft, each team emails the commish with 3 names from his roster. Those are the keepers. Everyone else goes back in the player pool.It makes draft day a little interesting, there's a lot of strategizing in the first couple of picks. Especially when you've got the first pick (#37) and you can correctly guess the other 11 teams' keepers... means you can get top selection of the players dropped. Often it means I'd keep a lesser WR over an RB if I think that an even better RB will be made available.

Good points. Do owners get to see the players that are kept prior to the draft ?

Yeah, the commish will reveal all 12 teams' keepers prior to the draft, about a week before. But you don't know them when you announce your own keepers. So there's a little gamesmanship involved to maximize value... will you keep Marques Colston if you think the Larry Fitzgerald owner might want to keep Aaron Rodgers, Arian Foster, and Maurice Jones-Drew?

15 position $200 Auction cap/Keeper league, QB,RB,RB,WR,WR,TE,K,D

Any player (or defense) drafted can be protected by any owner for the following season. However, that player’s salary WILL NOT REMAIN THE SAME AS THE SALARY HE HAD FOR THE YEAR IN WHICH HE WAS DRAFTED. All players salaries shall increase for the following year as follows, if an owner wishes to protect that player.

Players drafted between $1 -$19 shall increase by $3.

Players drafted between $20 - $29 shall increase by $4

Players drafted for $30 and over shall increase by $5.

Obviously, just because you drafted your team does not mean that you are stuck with that roster for the entire season. An owner can change his team over the course of the season in a variety of ways, including trades, injury moves, free agency moves and so on. However, the most important thing to know is that you did not have to be the owner that drafted the player in order to protect that player for the following season.

If an owner drafts a guy for $5 and trades him to another team during the season, that new owner now has the rights to that player and can opt to protect that player during the off season. Secondly, only players that were actually DRAFTED can be protected for the next season. All players acquired via free agency and injury moves (both shall be discussed in a minute) ARE NOT PROTECTABLE. Easy, right!?

There are obviously rules about how many players each owner can protect, and here they are. The team that wins the Super Bowl can protect ONE player for the following year. I know this sounds harsh, but when you are on a team plagued by injury and fail to make the playoffs, you will be happy that a few solid players will available in the next season’s draft. The second place team can keep 2 players while the other playoff teams can keep up to 3.

For all the non-playoff squads, these losers can keep up to 4 players. Now, just because you can protect up to 4 players, that doesn’t mean that you have to. The thinking is that if you missed the playoffs, why protect 4 players from it? Remember, you can make trades in the off season to obtain better players, whom you can then protect.
Hence players out of the playoff hunt often look to unload high priced talent in exchange for quality- and inexpensive!- talent.

we keep 3 players:

1 player from draft round 1-5

1 player from draft round 6-10

1 player from draft rounds 11+

you can keep someone from a higher draft round instead (2 from 11+ instead of 1 from 6-10 and 1 from 11+, for example)

they become your round 1-3 picks for year X, so in year X+1 you can only keep one of them.

has worked very well for 5 years.

One league we keep 3, you can keep them for a round higher than what you picked them in. Cannot keep a first rounder, obviously.

Another we have a "franchise tag" player. You can keep any one player drafted 2nd round or later or picked up in FA for as long as you would like.

we keep 2, but they have to be from different positions. RB were being hoarded in year's past which made teams thin at RB. plus this also open trades and football talk right before the draft with people trying to trade top players for draft picks (it you have 2 top RB and a team doesn't have any, you might as well get something out of it instead of just tossing him back in the pool....).

also, every 3 years we have a redraft to wipe the slate clean and allow the league to enjoy the excitement of a true 1st round draft

I like the idea of only being able to keep one player at a position.

6. Keeper RulesStarting with 2008 owners can keep up to 3 players from their roster each year. Players from any position (QB,RB,WR,TE,K,D) can be kept. Keepers must be declared one week before the draft ("Keeper deadline"). Keepers can be dropped after the deadline up to the start of the draft for any reason. When a player is kept a draft pick 2 rounds higher from where they were drafted must be used. For example if you draft [WR] in round 7 you have to use your 5th round draft pick to keep him. To help the league track where each player was drafted, a "Keeper Number" (KN) field will be added to each team's roster on the league site. The KN identifies which draft round must be used to keep that player. Each year the kept player's KN is reduced by 2.If the required draft round is not available (You either traded away that draft pick or you want to keep two players that have the same KN), you must use the next highest draft round. To help the league track how long a player has been kept a "Keeper Status" (KS) field will be added to each team's roster. This field can display either "one" (has been kept one year) or "two" (has been kept two years). A blank field means the player is not a keeper.- Undrafted players (free agents) will be assigned a KN of 10 so a 10th round pick must be used to keep them.- Players with a KN of 1 or lower cannot be kept. This means all players drafted in the first 3 rounds will always be available the following year.- Players can be kept a maximum of 2 times.- Dropped players maintain their original KN and KS throughout the season.- Traded players maintain their original KN and KS throughout the season.

In our keeper league you can keep up to 3 at any position and their value is based on when they were drafted. Their draft value goes up a round the next year until they are worth a 1st rounder, the next year you would have to have (2) 1st rounders to keep them. Whenever you trade a player their value goes down a round to the new owner, for example you have MJD at a 1st he is a 2nd to the new owner. The only caveat to the is you can't trade back for a player you have traded away or their value goes back to what it was when you owned them. All rookies drafted get 3 rounds added to their value and any FA's have a value 0f 10.

Makes it very interesting as I kept Brees for 4 years at a 11th, 10, 9th and 8th before trading him away. I drafted Vick in the 15th round as a backup to Kolb this year.

You see alot of studs being dealt for next to nothing as far as draft picks go.
