Keeper strategy (1 Viewer)

In a keeper league, where do you draw the line between keeping players that will help you NOW versus players that have the potential to help you in the FUTURE?

For example, if you have a choice between keeping a young WR with potential and an older, solid QB, what would you do? By WR with potential, I mean a WR who hasn't been a reliable (fantasy) WR2 yet, and by solid QB, I mean one who should be a weak QB1, or a good back-up QB.

I left out TEs, because unless you have the ability to keep Gates, I don't think they are worth keeping. I also don't count RBs in this discussion, because I believe a young RB with potential EASILY trumps a young WR or an older, solid QB.

This has been a problem for me several times, on both sides of the argument, whether it was keeping players who were younger because of the potential I felt they had, as well as trading away younger players for an older guy to try to "win this year."

What are the shark's opinions on this?

you just have to weight the future vs. now

if you can win this year, go for it, if not then youth is the way to go

I think there are a too many factors in a keeper decision that are more important than that one to really be able to answer your question. Things like what it costs to keep a guy factor in. There's a big difference between leagues where keeping 4 players costs you your 1st-4th round picks vs keeping a guy where he was drafted, and it's a big difference if everyone always gets the same number of keepers or if you have the choice of keeping a guy or using the pick normally. At the heart of it is what will give you the better team. Don't keep a guy you can be sure reacquire with a 5th round pick over a guy that it would cost you a 4th round pick to reacquire. If they both are 4th rounders then you'd have to weigh the chances you can get quality players at their positions out of the draft vs what this guy will produce down the road. There is no simple pat answer, every different league setup and pair of players is going to be slightly different.
