I was watching the game on television and there seems to be some smoke regarding Keith Rivers' production in Cincy.
He was definitely in the game, just never around the ball. I don't understand how this is even possible for a starting WLB?
I couldn't tell if he's taken out on passing downs or not, but being outproduced by Brandon Johnson in Week 4 (Pitt 9 tackles) is very disconcerting. I did see Brandon Johnson get a few snaps in the Balt game too.
Any Cincy homers understand what is happening with Rivers? Maybe the broken jaw has made him timid? It is looking more and more like Rey M is the guy to have in Cincy (leading team tackler and on the SLB).
Rivers is only averaging 50% of his team's defensive snaps this year. With the more aggressive run support from Rey Maualuga and Roy Williams and the variations in the scheme that have him aligned to the offensive strong side now and then, sometimes he'll put up 5-7 solos, sometimes 0-2. Not much he's doing differently in any given game.
While we're on the subject, do you think Mauuluga can take over at MLB soon? The man is nasty in the games I've watched although he plays a bit unorthodox. What do you think his numbers would look like in a full-time roll in the middle and do you see it happening soon? Any other Cincy homers want to chime in?

Maualuga won't be in the middle until 2010 unless Dhani Jones is injured and he'll have to compete for an every-down role then. With his sudden, downhill style, he's a top 20 linebacker with upside as an every-down MLB.
